Compact OK's openings

The Columbia River Compact on June 19 modified the previously adopted fisheries to include the sales of sockeye incidentally caught during the commercial target chinook fishing periods in lower Columbia River waters.

Openings were set for June 24 and 7 p.m. July 1 to 5 a.m. July 2, 10 hours.

Allowable sales include chinook, sockeye, coho, steelhead, walleye, carp, and shad. All steelhead must be released immediately.

A compact hearing has been scheduled via teleconference for 11 a.m.Friday to consider additional treaty Indian fishing periods, additional recreational sturgeon fishing opportunity in the area below Wauna powerlines, and to review sockeye stock status, harvest to date, and potential non-Indian sockeye fisheries.
