Mule teams second at district meet

The Wahkiakum Mule girls track and field teams finished second in team competition at the Southwest District Meet last Saturday at Naselle, and many local athletes qualified for the state meet.

Tacoma Baptist won the boys meet with 106.5 points; the Mule boys were eighth with 36 points. Northwest Christian won the girls with 106 points; the Mules were second with 70.

The top five girls and top four boys advanced to the state meet this Friday and Saturday at Eastern Washington University, Cheney.

Sarah Doumit won the high jump for the Mules, and the Mule girls relay runners Doumit, Abby Burns, Valle Ledtke, Whitley Wirkkala, and Jasmine Bingham won the 400m and 800m relays. Running the 800m relay, Burns, Ledtke, Wirkkala and Bingham set a new district meet record, 1:48.94.

Bingham claimed second in the 100m and 200m, and Doumit was second in the triple jump.

Valle Ledtke was third in the 400m, and Wirkkala was third in the 300m hurdles.

Walker Riley led the boys team with a second in the 800m.

The 400m relay team of Riley, Jon Murphy, Bryce McClain and Mike Weiler placed third.
