Bottle tagging project raises alcohol awareness

On May 1, volunteers from the Wahkiakum Sheriff's Office, Wahkiakum Community Network, and DATAP, a local substance abuse prevention youth group got together to implement Project Bottle Tagging.

The tags remind adults that if they supply alcohol to minors, it is a crime punishable with a fine of $5,000 and/or one year in jail. The project is a countywide public awareness campaign that places stickers and bottle tags on multi-packs of beer, wine coolers, and other alcohol products to educate adults on the penalties and to discourage them from providing alcohol to minors.

One hundred percent of the retailers in Wahkiakum County participated this year. Participating merchants in the project were Cathlamet Market, Cathlamet Chevron, Cathlamet Food Mart, Cathlamet Liquor Store, Skamokawa Town Center, Rosburg Store and Johnson's One Stop.
