Lady Mules receive basketball team awards

Wahkiakum Lady Mule basketball players received awards at a recent program.

Awards were:

Coaches' Captain Award--Courtney Helms and Whitley Wirkkala.

Best Defensive Player, Best Offensive Player, Top Rebounder-- Shelby Deaton.

Coaches' Award---Halie Boyce.

Most Valuable Player--Courtney Helms.

Scrub Award--Shelby Felton.

Miss Hustle--Ashley Helms.

Most Inspirational--Ashley Moore.

Coach Tim Brown also reported that Courtney Helms was voted by Central League coaches to the second team all league. "Courtney also played in the area all star game at Lower Columbia College where she scored 11 points, had five rebounds and two steals," Brown said. "Halie Boyce and Shelby Deaton also were voted as honorable mention."

Academic all stars were Boyce 3.733, Ashley Helms 3.502, Jordyn Wirkkala 3.985, Kari Schillios 3.611, and Deaton 3.697. They needed a 3.5 or better to be honored

The team finished the season with a 6-16 record, 4-10 in the Central League, which had two teams play for the state championship and a third finish sixth at state.

"With a somewhat young team, where we at times only started one senior and one junior against the very strong 2B Central with some teams starting three, four or sometimes five seniors," Brown said. "The girls should be looking forward to next year and being very successful."
