Comets eliminated in district

Both Naselle Comet boys and girls basketball teams were eliminated from the Southwest 2B District basketball tournaments last week.

The Comet boys made it to the semifinals where they lost 65-57 to the Northwest Christian Navigators last Wednesday.

NW Christian led 29-26 at halftime and held on to their lead down the stretch. Nathan Sultemeier scored 18 for the Comets; brothers Kyle Burkhalter and Austin Burkhalter 13 each, Connor Smith nine, and Nick Hines and Alan Erickson two each.

On Thursday, the Napavine Tigers took the lead late in the third quarter and held on to win 65-54.

Kyle Burkhalter, a senior, led the Comet scoring with 15 points. Sultemeier and Hunter Smith scored 12 each, A. Burkhalter nine, Hines four, and Gabe See two. The Comets finished the season with a 15-8 record.

Meanwhile, the Comettes opened district with a 65-53 win over Wahkiakum. They then lost 64-40 to eventual champion White Pass. They beat Pe Ell 44-36 on February 18 but were eliminated in a 39-35 loss to Toutle Lake on February 20.
