Mules toast Raymond, South Bend at invite

The Wahkiakum Mule boys basketball team earned two more wins in action last week at the Wahkiakum Invitational.

The Mules topped the Raymond Seagulls 77-56 on Thursday night and the South Bend Indians 94-63 on Friday night.

In other action at the cross over invitational, the Kalama Chinooks beat South Bend 56-45 on Thursday and Raymond 64-41 on Friday.

The Mules shredded South Bend's defense in the first quarter, with Cody Olsen hitting from three point range and Josh Rongey and Bobby Helms penetrating inside. They posted a 27-12 lead in eight minutes.

With a couple starters on the bench with foul trouble in the second quarter, the Mule offense slowed down, and South Bend outscored the Mules 18-17 in the frame. The Mules led 44-30 at halftime.

With the starters back on the court in the third quarter, the Mules blitzed the visitors for a 33-20 advantage; they led 77-50 at the end of three quarters.

Olsen led the scoring with 25 points. Rongey put in 20, Helms 12, Tyler Benson nine, Hayden Miles eight, Chase Fritzie and Chris Diaz four apiece, and Drew Windsor and Ross Lofstrom with two each.

Rongey made eight assists; Benson had 10 rebounds, and Helms had four steals.

On Thursday, the Mules jumped to a 30-16 lead over Raymond and never looked back.

Olsen led the scoring with 24 points; Rongey had 22, Benson 10, Miles nine, Helms and Tyson Bain four each, and Diaz two.

Benson blocked four shots and made four steals; Rongey made nine assists and had five rebounds.

Named to the all-invitational team were, Wahkiakum, Rongey, Olsen, Miles and Benson, and South Bend, Randy Eang, Chase Michell and Dave Lorton.

The Mules host the Mossyrock Vikings tonight (Thursday) in a key Central League match. They go to Toutle Lake Monday for another key game and host Morton January 9.
