Citizens, officials review library needs

Patrons of the Cathlamet Library and town officials discussed desires for updating the library and city hall site at a town meeting Tuesday.

The town is planning to refurbish city hall now that the fire department has moved out of the lower level to the new fire hall.

Mayor Dick Swart asked the audience for ideas and desires so that he can take them to the town council in December.

Swart said that if the council proceeds, the town would consult with an architect in early 2008. After a review of plans, construction could begin, and a refurbished fire hall could be ready in 2009.

Library Board member Mike McAvoy reviewed input gathered from the library board: They listed a wide range of desires ranging from more space to improved computers, and they talked about adding an area to display art and a room for classes or meetings, and so on.

Citizen input largely echoed the ideas in McAvoy’s report.

Jerry Ledtke, also a library board member, suggested a multi-media area would be popular with teenagers.

Former Mayor Bob Rendler suggested an increase in library hours, and there was discussion of the need for more volunteers to staff the library.

Steve McNichols suggested consulting with the Wahkiakum Historical Society about possibly combining services with the museum and possibly using the society’s valuable waterfront land to fund projects.

Other ideas included expanding the building on both levels and remodeling the lower level to house public restrooms, a laundry, and possibly retail space.
