On October 15, the Wahkiakum Mules junior varsity beat the Naselle Comets JV's 29-8.
Mule sophomore Bryce McClain ran the ball for 199 yards to lead his team.
"Bryce had some good blocking, but his vision, cut backs, and hard nose running were the difference in this game," said Mule JV Coach Kevin Patching. "Naselle stacked the line to stop the inside dives, so we were forced to run a little more outside than normal, and Bryce took advantage of his carries with three touchdowns and a couple of two point conversion runs.
"The defense played well all night with the exception of a few big plays including a Naselle 78 yard touchdown run towards the end of the second quarter," Patching said. "The Mules put pressure on the Comet quarterback all night with five sacks and a handful of rushed passes. Leading the way was Jordan Fritch with one sack and six tackles and Phil Doumit with two sacks and two tackles from the defensive end positions."
The Mules scored twice in the first quarter on McClain runs of seven and 29 yards; he also ran the conversions. The Comets scored on a 78-yard run in the second quarter.
In the third quarter, McClain scored on a 75-yard run, and Jordan Fritsch returned a fumble 50 yards for a touchdown; Fritsch also kicked the conversion.
Also for the Mules, Cameron Elliot gained 25 yards and Zach Schneider had 38 yards. Leading tacklers were Riley Prestegard 5, Phillip Doumit 2 sacks and 2 tackles, Schneider 3 tackles, James Goldsmith 5, Brandon Fudge 3, and Jordan Fritch with six tackles and one quarterback sack.
The Comets ran the ball 30 times for 130 yards and completed four of 12 passes for 50 yards.
The Mules' game with Pe Ell set for October 22 was cancelled.
