Ducks top Mules in battle of unbeatens

The Toutle Lake Ducks took command of the Central League volleball standings with a 3-2 win over the Wahkiakum Mules on Tuesday.

Both teams entered the match undefeated in league play.

The Mules won the first two games 25-10, 26-24 but lost the next three 20-25, 16-25, 10-15.

Sara Jespersen led the team at the net with nine kills and 14 blocks; Shelby Deaton added seven kills and seven blocks. Paige Kehrli scored 13 service points and made 30 assists, and Brandi Arness made seven kills and played super defense, Coach Patty Anderson said.

The loss left the Mules 6-1 in league play. They close out the regular season today (Thursday) at Morton. The district tournament starts next week.

The Mules swept Vancouver Christian 3-0 in their last home match of the season on October 18.

The Mules won by scores of 25-10, 25-12, 25-18.

At the net Whitley Wirkkala made six kills. Jordyn Wirkkala served 14 points. Kehrli made 16 assists, and Coach Anderson complemented the defensive play of Kehrli and Brittney Robbins.

The team honored its seniors, Whitley Wirkkala, Sara Jespersen and Brandi Arness, before the start of the Vancouver Christian match.
