99th county fair begins due to volunteers' hard work

August 9 , 2007

The 99th Wahkiakum County Fair kicks off Thursday for three days after many months of fairground rehabilitation following last year's floods.

Highlights of the three-day event, organized by Fair Manager Kathleen Morgain and a large group of volunteers, include timbersports demonstrations, a battle of the bands contest, slow tractor races, and musical acts.

Timbersports competitors headed by ESPN's Jeff Skirvin will give demonstrations on all three days and the karaoke contests will take place on Friday.

Musical entertainment includes the Celluloid Cowboys on Thursday and Dented Trucks, a Chicago-style Blues band on Friday.

Exhibitors, vendors and animal shows also will be featured at the fair. Admission to the fair is $6 for all three days or $3 for one day. Children under age 5 get in free. Thursday is senior citizens and Red Hat Ladies day, with free admission for those groups until 4 p.m.

Friday is kids’ day, with free admission until 4 p.m. for all children 14 and under.

Anyone with military ID gets in free on Saturday 8/18, which also is the salmon barbecue day.

The fair will take place at the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds, in Skamokawa.
