First of all let me remind everyone that the Fair is scheduled for three days only on August 16, 17 and 18, which is the traditional Thursday, Friday, Saturday.
Yes, there was considerable flood damage from the November, 2006, event; however, work if progressing very well, and we’ll be up and welcoming fair participants as every year in the past. We would welcome volunteers early in May to help with painting benches, tables, exhibit areas.
We’re working toward a June 1 deadline for most projects to accommodate the 7th Annual Derby Dollars for Scholars combined with the 2nd Annual Rod and Reel Car show held on the fairgrounds and the adjoining park.
The areas of greatest flood impact were the office, the food booth and the demonstration kitchen in the Youth Building, which were affected by black mold. Every area that had black mold has been thoroughly inspected. Those areas have been removed and replaced or pressure washed where practical. Pressure washing is taking place, followed by disinfecting. In some areas, such as the restroom, thorough disinfecting has been done several times. All building walls, inside and outside, affected by flood waters are being sprayed with proper mold removal solutions, followed by pressure washing then disinfecting. I believe it’s fair to say the Fairgrounds will be more germ-free than any year in the past.
If you’ve been an exhibitor participant in the past, don’t be disheartened by rumors about there being no fair. Please think about items to display at the fair. We need many exhibitors bringing handcrafted and artistic works. Also, please consider your farm animals or household pets—rabbits, cavies, fish, birds, cows, horses, sheep, goats, and pigs. What would a fair be without your wonderfully garden grown vegetables, fruits and flowers? There is a place for everything and everyone at the fair.
