  • 4-H kids watch robots milk cows

    Jessica Vik|Nov 17, 2022

The Robo Rascals (an after school 4-H robotics club, grades K-8) took a field trip to see the robots that milk cows at the Burkhalter family farm-Grays River Holsteins. This trip was actually scheduled for the week prior but due to a robot not working correctly, it was pushed off a week. Instead, a tech came out that day to the farm and got them up and running again. This is a reality with technology. It works great when it works but sometimes, companies have to call for help. Arriving at...

FAFF: The Finns at FAFF sent me a couple changes for their upcoming events: The Christmas Tree Lighting will be on December 3 and the baking classes have been cancelled. I am hoping a few Finns will send me some Christmas childhood memories so I can include them in The Eagle as we get closer to Christmas. If you have a story, just send me three to five hundred word stories that will help all of us remember our early Christmas holidays. Last weekend was a busy one for sure with the American...

The garden supplied veggies to the Wahkiakum Food Bank in Cathlamet and the West End Food Pantry at Johnson Park in Rosburg. Much has happened at the garden this year. With funding procured through the Health and Human Services Food and Nutrition staff, Heather Odum and Julie J...

  • Celebrate all veterans on Friday, November 11

    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 10, 2022

NOT NICE--We all know that we had quite the weather event this past week but at least it didn’t last too long. However, with power outages, road closures due to flooding and drivers finding roadways littered with rocks and trees, it’s an early reminder of just what to expect and prepare for in the coming months. Actually, we may be having a few days of freezing weather by the time you read this, so I hope you were able to wrap up your pipes and cover your flowers, etc., and have what you need for that event. Like I said, these nasty storms are...

A Commentary on Flooding: It's flood time again. Let's talk about floods so new folks have some information as we move into flood season. Our low lying areas, if we hadn't populated them already, would be marshes or wetlands with trees that can live in water. Those trees, often noticed at high tide, can be seen across SR 4 from the turn onto West Deep River Road. Two hundred plus years ago when Lewis and Clark came through, only the tribes who lived in the region would wander through for fish or...

  • Daylight savings ends on November 6

    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 3, 2022

WET ONE--As this week begins, it’s pretty doggone soggy out, which means that those who went trick or treating may have needed boots and umbrellas to go with their costumes, so that’s a bummer. Actually this whole week looks wet but there’s always that slight chance that a “window of dryness” will open now and then on those 60 percent chance of rain days, so we’ll hope that happens more and it rains even less! OFF AND ON--I’m typing this up early while I still have a phone line and I still have internet as it seems I’m among the many folks who...

    Karen Bertroch|Nov 3, 2022
