BLUSTERY--As I begin this column, it is a very blustery Monday and the tree branches are breaking and debris is flying, so if you’re getting this windy weather, I hope you’ve managed to keep your outside things from flying away! I also hope you don’t have to be outside as falling tree branches can be detrimental to one's vehicle or your well being! It looks like we’re in for a soggy week, so keep those boots handy, as I believe we’re going to need them! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays this coming week are Patty Calvert, Cindy Llo...

In December, The Eagle invited local poets to submit poems for our Annual Poetry Corner to start the new year. Thanks, poets, and enjoy! ---------------- The Drumming Mule The Bremen-Town Musicians by The Brothers Grimm Tells of some animals who went out on a limb. To sing for their supper-they were horrific. Read their story to see how it turned out terrific. A donkey singing, well okay. We know a donkey likes to bray. But how about drumming, by his cousin the mule? I happened to see this at school! At a basketball game, I left my seat To get...
ANOTHER YEAR--Well, we’re five days into 2023 and we’ve had some wild weather to end 2022 and to start 2023 as well, so I’m hoping for some milder stuff for awhile. We certainly had some horrible road conditions over Christmas and then later we saw heavy rains with some low land flooding and then we tossed in some super sonic thunder and brilliant lightning so that was definitely impressive! The earlier forecast of some dry weather for this week quickly fell apart and now it looks to be wet and stormy as well, so I hope you’re stocked up and...
Happy New Year, my friends! This is my third annual writing folder for Eagle articles. We've all been through a lot over the past two years and I hope and pray we're only going higher, happier and healthier. During the past quiet week, I spent time in one of my favorite history books, "Water Under the Bridge" by Ruth Busse Allingham. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on Marie Fauver, one of the first people I visited with when I moved to Grays River in 2005. I first lived in Cathlamet after...

PRETTY UGLY--I think we can all agree that last week's weather was pretty awful, as “Ole Man Winter” really made his debut a powerful one and that ice storm we had really came on fast and definitely made road travel treacherous. One stretch of I-5 saw 20 roll over accidents in just a few hours and most agreed that the streets were “ice rinks” and people should stay home. Even air travel was deeply impacted as hundreds of flights got cancelled and people were stranded all across the states, so it was really a brutal holiday weekend for hundred...
The recreational razor clam season on all coastal beaches remains closed until further notice, shellfish managers with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) announced. Razor clam test results released on Dec. 22 indicate domoic acid levels on all beaches, remain above the health guidelines for safe consumption set by Washington Department of Health (WDOH) officials. Domoic acid, a natural toxin produced by certain types of marine algae, can be harmful or fatal if consumed in sufficient quantities. WDFW learned from similar...

Submitted by Suzanne Holmes It’s hard to miss the Cathlamet Pioneer Center. It is the most prominent landmark in our community. The uniquely designed building, a former church, sits in the middle of town and its tall steeple peeks above the rooftops. Built in 1896, the building has many impressive historical features. Outside you are drawn to beautiful stained-glass windows, and highly decorative wood-shingle siding. Moving inside, one of the most striking features are the massive, curved pews. The 13 hand-made pews provide nearly 200’ of sea...

BEEN COLD--I hope you survived the arctic blast that we had last week, as it certainly was chilly around these parts. Those low 20 degree temperatures certainly make my ole bones ache, along with making those roads slick with ice and heavy frost. By the time you read this, we may have already had another round of freezing temps and even some snow, but with ever changing weather models, I guess we will just have to wait and see what we get. Personally, I’d just as soon not have a white Christmas as I know a lot of folks are traveling over the h...
