SOGGY HOLIDAY--As the atmospheric river made its way to the area on Sunday, we definitely saw a super soggy Easter, so it’s a good thing most Easter Egg Hunts were done on Saturday around here so as not to be totally drenched; whew! According to the forecast, it looks to be a wet start to the week but we’re due for some dry days by mid-week and even a dry weekend. I won’t hold my breath as that keeps changing but I sure hope it’s true. I’m also hoping the “slight chance of flooding” is non-existent but just in case, we’re all set here at our...
My friends, it was bound to happen. I got Lois Burkhalter's dates mixed up, so I'll try again. She was born in 1940, not married in 1940. Yes, I'm embarrassed, but there's more. They came to Naselle in 1964, not 1966, and she had their four children in the years 1960-1970, not 1950-1960. May I simply say it was an "Off Day" when I wrote that? Lois, I am very sorry. I really should have caught at least one of those. I sincerely hope all the information this week is correct, lots of dates and...

WHAT A DAY!--As this week began, on Palm Sunday, we definitely had a mix of weather. Not only did we have snow, rain showers and sunshine but we threw in a nice little hail storm to boot! Thankfully, the snow that covered everything, including the road here in West Valley and SR 4 going up KM, didn’t last a long time and was melted off by afternoon. From the forecast I’m looking at for the coming week, it seems spring weather will continue to elude us and we will still need rain jackets and warm coats! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating bir...
Jackson Blalock with "Sea Change" came to visit me to ask about my thoughts on the Grays River, what I know about the river's history and my thoughts on what can be done to help the river. As we visited, I realized he's coming at his thinking in a good way because he wants to learn what "we the people" think and want before he starts making any plans. He has read past reports and studies and he understands a great deal of the information others have offered. He made me quite happy when he...

WHITE START--As this week began, and a week after spring had officially arrived, we woke to a very wintery Sunday as it was all white with snow here in West Valley! I know KM Mountain and Beaver Creek were sporting a fresh coat of the white stuff as well, so I’d say winter isn’t quite done with us yet. However, by afternoon, the white covered roads and fields were back to their proper colors of black and green and the skies had turned to blue. What a change in just a few hours! Forecasters say we will be on the chilly side this week but hop...
While going through old files in my computer, I found a folder named “Maki files.” I opened it and found a treasure. One short piece shows an old photo of a wide open valley in the upper Grays. It took me a minute, but when I saw the old house in the middle, I knew it was the Gorley property up Fossil Creek Road at the bottom of KM Hill. Underneath, in the first paragraph, a new world opened for me. It says, “Herman Katajamaki came from Nurmo, Finland to America in 1892. Here he met and married Amanda Harfu in 1894. Amanda had a sister, Sophia...
