  • Restrictions are being lifted here gradually

    Kay Chamberlain|May 28, 2020

WET--As I begin this on Memorial Day, it is a very wet and ugly looking day out there, so if you had any plans for this past weekend, I hope you did them earlier on, as this start to the week was not a nice one. While radar showed little moisture out there and some folks thought it might be dry, if you happen to live in Skamokawa, it was anything but dry! The forecast calls for very warm and sunny conditions from Tuesday through Friday, so here's hoping all you heat seekers get your wish! WONDERFUL TRIBUTE--I just want to say that the...

  • Downriver Dispatches

Rosburg Cemetery The Rosburg Cemetery is here today because of the gracious donation of the land by the Andresen and Johnson families in the late 19th century. Thanks to Ed Stevens from Ilwaco for mowing the lawns. American Legion Post #111 representative Dale Rose was at the cemetery last Wednesday with his son placing American flags on the graves of deceased veterans. The very first person to be buried there was Asmus Andresen on December 29, 1885. The cemetery is located on the south side of...

It is the Ojibwe word for “they take care of each other.” We are still working to raise money for the Summer Lunch program this year. If you have the interest or ability to donate funds, you may do so by writing a check payable to Kiwanis/Outdoor Café 2020. You can send your donation to PO Box 515, Cathlamet, WA 98612. • Skamokawa News: No fresh strawberries from Lions Club

    Kay Chamberlain|May 21, 2020

PRETTY WET--I hope you used those sun breaks earlier this week to get your lawn mowed and those other outdoor chores done, as we are supposed to get pretty wet during this week. Last weekend I was happy to get out and about and get a bit of yardwork done before the raindrops came back. These days it's "off and on" with the rain so we have to get out there when we can. With a little luck, I may have some flowers left to put up at the cemetery for this Memorial Day on Monday, but sadly there's a couple of bushes that are "toast" already, which...

  • Downriver Dispatches: Virus vs Bacteria

    Darrell Alexander|May 21, 2020

I noticed a sign on the door of the local barber shop in Cathlamet that the Governor had shut them down during this Covid19 pandemic. I had just taken my daughter to a dentist in Battle Ground, and the question that came to me and to others was: Why is a dentist office safer than a barber shop? This is someone violating the 6-foot rule and has his hands in your mouth. I have never seen a barber cut hair facing his customer. This intrigued me into wondering what the difference was between...

  • Local farms, gardens offer nutritious food

Carrie Backman, WSU Wahkiakum County Extension Agent|May 21, 2020

As a county extension agent, I get to visit farmers and gardeners from the western reaches of Deep River to the eastern hillsides of Cathlamet. Their rainfall and soils range widely from hillsides to valley bottoms, but they all have important things in common--good food and good people growing it. I’m sharing some of that here in The Eagle over the next few weeks with short features on Wahkiakum farms and details on how you can bring that good food home to your table. May begins the season for...

  • Coming Events Community Center in Cathlamet

Meadow Meeder, Wah. Co. Healthy Community Specialist|May 21, 2020

While doing some research, I came across an article on starttalkingnow.org. Dr. Yolanda Evans and social worker Erik Schlocker of Seattle Children’s Adolescent Medicine Clinic have recently compiled data and found that the “youth have indicated worsened mood and feelings of boredom and isolation, resulting in an increase in the misuse of prescription and non-prescription medicines, and alcohol and drug use as a way to cope.” This is a big deal, so I thought I would share some helpful considerations in order to keep teens safe as they spend...

HOT ONE--If you are one of those folks who like the heat, you sure enjoyed this past weekend, as temperatures were close to 90 degrees, certainly toasty enough for me! Before that, there were several days that were in the upper 70s/lower 80s and it was quite a nice dry streak for folks who were sick of the cold and wet weather. This week looks to be much cooler and damper too, with the only real dry day being tomorrow, Friday, so I hope you're able to take advantage of any dry times that we get, as I swear the lawn needs to be mowed every few...

Farmers markets, vegetables, summer lunches, oh my! These are welcome words in this uncertain time. Stay healthy, eat your veggies and help when you can: This is my personal mantra I am using for myself and my 6-year old. What is yours? The Senior Farmers Market Nutrition Program (SFMNP) provides fresh fruit and vegetables by way of farmers market vouchers to eligible seniors, with the goal of improving their health and nutritional status. It also supports local farmers by increasing the use of farmers markets and roadside stands. Seniors, we...

Wear a N95 Mask? A minor study concerning headaches and the N95 face-mask between healthcare providers published in U.S. Library of Medicine National Institutes of Health on PubMed.gov in 2006 looked at healthcare workers wearing N95 masks during the SARS epidemic. It suggested that the use of N95 masks may cause the healthcare workers to develop headaches and wearing them for shorter amounts of time may reduce the frequency and severity of the headaches. It was during the 2003 severe acute...

  • Mother's Day is this Sunday; treat her

    Kay Chamberlain|May 7, 2020

MIXED BAG--This past weekend was certainly a mixture of weather, as it seemed to pour down rain one minute and then the sun would come out and it looked great again; until the next cloud burst showed up. I'm told the end of this week may see some very nice weather and even some hot days, so all you sun lovers will be more than happy to see that. Remember, it may be cool in your car when you start out in the morning, but if the heat shows up, your car quickly turns into a death trap for animals and children, so here's hoping we don't have to hea...
