  • Treat the man in your family this Sunday

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 18, 2020

PRETTY WET--This past weekend it was pretty wet, like inches of wetness, at least out here in West Valley. The greenery even got so heavy, that a couple of trees came down and one of them took out our power! Thank goodness we saw a bit more sunshine and dry weather on Sunday, which was Flag Day, and I'm told we'll have a few really nice days by the end of the week and maybe even half of the weekend, so let's hope we can all sneak in a BBQ while it's dry. However, with the weather being so unpredictable around here, I'm going to believe it when...

  • A sense of place: Driving through woods

    Jun 18, 2020

Editor's note: Oh, my. Last week's edition contained a special section, The Focus on Wahkiakum. We dedicated it to the graduating classes of 2020 and included writing from students expressing their thoughts about coping with school and the covid-19 quarantine. An incorrect article was printed under the byline of Colton Bachman. The high school staff member who submitted the students' articles accidentally attached a different article under Colton's name, and no one caught the error. We all apologize. Following is Colton's article. --Rick...

    Meadow Meeder, Healthy Community Specialist|Jun 18, 2020

There is a lot happening right now, in the world, in our hearts and in our lives. However, as we move forward as a community, I’m watching a lot of people really step into their power and it’s a beautiful thing. OK folks, its official- Summer Lunch has begun! • Kayakers and Duck Inn to open soon

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 11, 2020

WET AND WILD--Once again, this past week has been a mix of weather, and depending on where you were, you were either mowing the lawn or you were pulling out the umbrellas and putting on your boots! While I was actually enjoying some sunshine after a light morning shower, a friend of mine a little further east said it was pouring down rain for a bit, which was then accompanied by an extremely heavy burst of hail, so I guess if you didn't like the weather, you just needed to drive a few miles in another direction, and you'd find yourself in...

KM Mountain Slide update Anyone who has been driving over the KM Mountain is well aware that even though the seeding process was successful, the continuous rainfall has caused the slide to move again. I have been in contact with Tamara Greenwell, the Lead Communicator for the Washington State Department of Transportation (WADOT). She communicated to me that the cleanup efforts are ongoing and going well. Each day crews are hauling out large amounts of debris. WSDOT estimated about 50,000 cubic...

  • Local dining establishments find their way to serve customers

    Darrell Alexander|Jun 11, 2020

Story and photos by Darrell Alexander The Covid19 virus has curtailed many people from traveling through the county. Since Phase II has begun, the governor has lifted the restrictions on restaurants in the state. Those that have reopened are using only 50 percent seating capacity in order to comply with the governor's suggested guidelines for social distancing. They are also in compliance with the Atlanta based Center for Disease Control's (CDC) suggested guidelines for social distancing. This i...

  • Skamokawa's jewels see improvements during pandemic

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 11, 2020

One of the "jewels" of Skamokawa, WA is located on SR 4 just west of MP 29, where you'll turn to the south onto Vista Park Road and find a true gem along the mighty Columbia River, which is "Skamokawa Vista Park." The park's closure at the beginning of the COVID-19 scare was heartbreaking for those that were used to having it accessible to them for camping and holding reunions and just enjoying a walk on the beach, so now that many restrictions are being lifted, its opening has been met with a l...

  • Eat Well, Buy Local: Glory B Farms--Tom and April Zimmerman

Carrie Backman, WSU Wahkiakum County Extension Agent|Jun 4, 2020

My young nephew presented a Glory B Farms strawberry to me a few summers ago, cradled carefully as the special gift it was, in his small outreached hands. "Carrie. Try one." He spoke quietly and reverently, like sharing a good secret. "Put one in your mouth and keep it there a loooong time." He was telling me to savor that Grays River strawberry, grown by Tom and April Zimmerman at Glory B Farms. He was right of course; those little strawberries pack a burst of flavor and sweetness special to...

  • More businesses opening soon

    Kay Chamberlain|Jun 4, 2020

WEEKEND--This past weekend marked the end of May and it ended in quite a racket really, as Saturday morning was booming with rolling thunder and later on, the pounding of some rain, but it was brief, so it was only noisy for a short amount of time compared to other places. Luckily we didn't get "shocked" by a lot of lightning like they did in other areas. Sunday was drippy and cloudy but nothing too major so now we'll see if we get that sunnier weather during the week which was forecast. The down side is, the weekend looks wet again, so not...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Darrell Alexander|Jun 4, 2020

An Incentive for Having a Garden Travelling through the West end of Wahkiakum County over the last several years has given me a little insight as to why people have a garden. It is mainly to supply their family and community with a large quantity of fresh, healthy vegetables throughout the season. Having a garden can also beautify the landscape. An incentive for having a garden is that people can grow crops they prefer that are not found in the stores in this area. One reason I decided to write...

  • "Quiet" Coast Community Radio membership drive a success

    Jun 4, 2020

The annual Spring Membership Drive started with the programmers talking up the station in the hopes that listeners would call and donate what they could to the yearly operations budget. Two days later, it became clear something bigger was brewing and the focus was shifted to providing information on rapidly changing conditions from the Covid-19 pandemic. Station Manager Graham Nystrom closed the station and sent volunteers and staff home to shelter in place. With just $23,000 towards...
