END OF ANOTHER MONTH--We’ll wrap up July and begin August on Monday and I’m still not done with my pre-Springtime chores; yikes! Now that it's hotter, the summer chores haven’t been done either as it’s too hot for me to work outside, so I feel for all of you who have to do that. The dampness we got on Monday morning was actually quite refreshing, but the rest of the week is going to be dry and toasty, so here’s hoping you’ve been slathering on the sunscreen and keeping yourself hydrated. Remember to reapply sunscreen every couple of hours or...

Monday August 14 enter all exhibits except livestock, baking, garden and floral from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. On Tuesday August 15 enter baking, garden and floral. And on Wednesday all animals come in (except dog and cat). If you haven't got your f...
It's almost August. How did that happen? It means the Fair, the Loggers Reunion and Labor Day weekend are all just around the bend. The older I get, the faster the days go by. There is a song that talks about now that we're older, how many more times will we see the cherry blossoms in bloom? We have time left and no real idea of how long that will be, but our time needs to be used so that we spend it with family, babies, young ones in pre-school, friends and elders, and yes, cherry trees. May...
Wahkiakum County youth are invited to a free kayaking event on Wednesday, August 2, to have some fun on the water and learn the basics of water safety, kayaking techniques, and how to file a float plan. “We want to provide some safety education for the youth of Wahkiakum County and the surrounding areas in response to some of the tragedies we’ve suffered in the last few years,” Wahkiakum County Deputy Lucas Getman said. “We are doing everything in our power to prevent any further issues like that. I think that starts with educating the youth. T...

The Area Agency for Aging and Disabilities of Southwest Washington and Wahkiakum Health and Human Services is inviting everyone 55 and over to the Senior Prom! “We won’t card you,” Kathy Briggs, who serves on the AAADSW Advisory Council, said, laughing. “We’re hoping to see as many faces as possible there. Cannon Beach, Ore. (AP) A cougar that climbed onto a towering rock off the coast of northwest Oregon over the weekend -- probably in search of feathered prey -- has abandoned the craggy formation, allowing for the popular Cannon Beach to reopen to visitors Monday. Multiple agencies and organizations, from local and state police to the state Department of Fish and Wildlife and the Parks and Recreation Department, responded to Sunday morning’s sighting of the big cat on the iconic Haystack Rock. The beach was closed to protect people and let i...
An Association of Washington Business survey of about 250 Washington manufacturers this spring found that while they aren’t quite as certain that a recession is coming soon (40% of manufacturers expect Washington to enter a recession in the next year compared to 47% of non-manufacturers), they are taking more concrete steps to prepare in case a downturn comes. Thirty percent of manufacturers have delayed hiring compared to 23% of other businesses and 46% have delayed capital expenditures (38% for non-manufacturers). Supply chain challenges l...

WET START--As this work week begins, we are seeing some real rain here in West Valley and I can’t say I’m unhappy about it. My lawn and plants were looking a bit brown and miserable, so this unexpected summer drink was perfectly timed! I’m pretty sure those still in the midst of haying would not agree with that sentiment however, so I feel bad for those folks. Here’s hoping the upcoming forecast comes true and they can salvage those fields that still need to be harvested. Today, I’m thankful for the drink that our forests are getting and the s...
Kaye Wiemer has left us. She died last week, such a loss for all of us. She was a kind person, perfect for a pastor's wife. My story about Kaye is that at the last Finn Fest, she watched me struggling to walk to my car as I left. I sometimes have a problem with balance and fatigue catches me when I've not been drinking enough water. She sent me the most beautiful card, hand written, full of sincere encouragement and love. It made such a lovely gesture and it's in my little pile of cards to treas...

The winners of the tournament were Cathlamet resident Julie Arness and her Pickleball/tennis partner, Shirley Derby of Longview. Despite rising heat, all the players appeared to have a good time and stayed hydrated. "This was really great," Cathlamet resident Anita Adams said. "We need to keep this going." COOLED DOWN--After several very hot days, I was happy to see the morning clouds and much milder temperatures arrive. I heard a lot of folks complaining of sunburns though, so one needs to be careful as while the sun seems like your friend, it really can be dangerous. Skin cancer is real and can be life threatening. Sunscreen has its limitations; it’s not meant for an all day, full blast exposure, especially near the water. So, take care, as I hear clearer, warmer weather is making a comeback this weekend! COME DOWN ON FRIDAY--If you want to g...
