COOLING DOWN--As I begin this column on Sunday morning, it is cloudy, cool and calm and we’re not worried about getting unbearably hot, so that’s okay with me, as those 90 to 100 degree temperatures were too much for me. The forecasters say we may get some rain, so we’ll see how that plays out. Fires are destroying acres of timberland, which is a tragedy for all of us, animals included. As always, be mindful of the fire restrictions that are currently in place in our area. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays Aug. 31-Sept. 6 are Nanea...

Tomorrow means September has arrived. This means summer is waning, fall is coming, school starts, morning showers are back and hopefully rain is coming for our fields, flowers and rivers. The first day of school is so exciting, can you remember how it felt to put on new clothes and see your old friends, then meet new ones? Life should be like that every day, don't you agree? There are several important gatherings in September. September 13 at 5:30, the Grays River Flood Control District will...

STILL DRY--It looks like our dry streak is continuing but the temperatures have at least gone down to a more bearable range, as those 100 plus degree days we had were just brutal. I hate to wish for rain, as there are several upcoming events that would not enjoy it, but maybe we could get a bit prior to those as we are definitely tinder dry, which considering the fires everywhere right now, is quite concerning. I hope you’ll all heed the burn ban in the county right now. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays this coming week, from August 2...

Sometimes I think I'm more trouble than I'm worth. Do you ever feel like there's too much going on for your mind to organize? Then again, aging isn't for sissies. My allergy to dust is killing me this summer. So much coughing I can't sleep at night, so much sneezing I wake up the dog, too. But this morning I noticed cars coming by in front of my house from the east, coming around the bend, seeing the sun coming up on the fields across from my house and slowing down to look at how beautiful it...

HOT ENOUGH?--I hope you were all prepared for the toasty conditions that we are scheduled to receive. It’s no fun being unprepared for scorching temperatures for ourselves and our four legged friends . It was already 80 degrees before 10 a.m. on Sunday. We knew we were in for some heat and more is expected ugh! As the weather is supposed to cool off some by the time you read this, more warm days could always follow, so please keep yourselves and your critters hydrated. We humans also need electrolytes to replenish what we lose when we’re swe...
It's Monday morning after a Sunday with 104 degrees as reported by Naselle folks. My back porch thermometer, in the shade, said we hit 100 in Grays River. During that heat on Sunday, around 3 p.m., there was a fire at the bottom of KM pass in Grays River. The property owner was working on putting more cedar posts in his corral. When his hammer hit metal, a spark immediately started the fire. Three Grays River Fire District trucks with firefighters came to help put out the fire, along with...
MIXED WEATHER--While we have some clouds to start this work week, they say we’ll be heating up and drying. Personally, I really enjoyed the cool down. Of course, the cool down wasn’t too severe and our evening hours were still warm and a bit muggy at times. As always, our West Valley weather can be completely different from those just two miles up the road, so we just never know what we’ll run into when we leave the house. I do know that if it really rains mid-week like is forecast, I will be loving it and so will my plants. The heat is suppo...

There's been a bit of rain on my .45 acre of property so it is now at least wet, if not soaked. Life is better for the roses. They love heat and need water so they are all doing well, but I simply have too many flowers and not enough energy to take care of them as I have for eighteen continuous summers. If you'd like to have any of my "movable" plants, let me know. In the Meserve files I borrowed from the Archive Center, I found an issue of the "Eagle" from June 3, 1948 with information on the P...

The weather is warming up and there’s nothing like cooking outdoors. Grilling is one of the most popular ways to cook food, but this can be hazardous if not done safely. Last year in Washington State, there were over 2000 fire incidents caused by cooking with over 10 million dollars in losses. This includes both propane and charcoal grills. The SFMO urges residents to practice grilling safety by: • Only using grills outdoors. • Keeping children and pets at least three feet away from your grilling area. • Placing your grill well away from yo...

NEW MONTH--A new month has begun and it’s fairly shocking to realize just how fast the time has gone by. I think my winter chores in January have yet to be accomplished so I’m way behind the eight ball this year! This week looks to be dry with only a hint of cloudiness, and temperatures more to my liking, so I hope you’re enjoying the sunny days. Here’s hoping these 70s stick with us at fair time as that would be nice and comfy. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from August 3-9 are Austin Smith, John L. McClain, Brian McClain, Treasur...
Finn Fest and School Projects Update The Finnish American Folk Festival scheduled for 2024 has been cancelled due to the likely unavailability of the school because of construction in the summer of 2024. As announced at the last School Board meeting, Lisa Nelson, Superintendent of the Naselle GRV School District, received a call in July confirming the $4.8 million grant for a major project in 2024. Since I just completed an interview with Lisa Nelson, Superintendent at the Naselle GRV Schools,...
