By Winnie, Joyce, Sue, Juanita, Kim, Denise, Chris and Jon Hard to believe that summer is gone. Now is time to prep the garden for fall and winter. In spite of some strange weather early in the season and the long dry spell, the Community Garden has never looked so good. Dedicated volunteers have helped with the weeding, watering and harvesting of the veggies, herbs, and fruit sent off to the local food banks. It is always distressful when after all the hard work, vandals are destructive. We have had some plants dug up and taken. This is very...
Submitted by Ron Wright Every year in September amateur radio clubs hold a contest to see who can talk to other operators in all 39 counties in the state, and to see who can make the most contacts outside of the state. We call it the "Salmon Run." To learn more about it, visit our club team in operation at the baseball field behind the track at Wahkiakum high School anytime from noon on Saturday September 18 to 3 p.m. Sunday September 19. To increase our contacts this year, we decided to...
CLOUDY BEGINNING--As this week begins, it's a bit cloudy but still fairly warm, so it's pretty good weather to be working outside. The rest of the week looks to be a mix of sun and clouds and comfortable temperatures, so those days will be enjoyable. However, it will also be interesting to see if the hot days forecast for this past Tuesday and Wednesday actually happen or not. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Sept 9-15 are Carla Keilwitz, Edward Johnson, Amanda Poler, Brittnie Helms-Lampitt, Jamie Nielsen, Tina Schubert, Shayne...
September 11 is National Emergency Responders Day. This week it seems appropriate to honor our own emergency responders as we get close to the 20th Anniversary of September 11, 2001. I remember that day very well and I know many of you do as well. I was working in my office at Fuller Seminary and heard on the radio. I drove to Fred Meyer in Ballard and bought a tiny TV so we could see for ourselves because it was so unbelievable to imagine. We were all stunned and quiet because it was difficult...
The emergency proclamation preventing shut-off of water, electricity or natural gas services is slated to end Sept. 30. It is among the many emergency measures enacted by Gov. Jay Inslee in the wake of covid-19. State leaders and utility operators estimate more than 500,000 Washingtonians have overdue bills that could result in their services being shut off. They urge customers to contact their utilities as soon as possible and make a plan to keep their services on. Information for customers is available at commerce.wa.gov/utility-assistance...

The Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival, originally planned for September 10-12, 2021, has been canceled due to the shifting COVID-19 landscape. On August 20, the Northwest Maritime Center (NWMC), the non-profit organization that puts on the Wooden Boat Festival, put in place requirements that all attendees provide proof of vaccination or negative COVID-19 test in an effort to address community concerns and to host the safest event possible. This decision was met with widespread positive feedback from the community and support from Jefferson...
Students went back to the classroom at Wahkiakum School District last week. Paraeducator Becky Dault was all business keeping youngsters safe in the crosswalk in front of Julius A. Wendt Elementary School on Tuesday, and watched the two boys closely as they crossed a second street, providing firm but kind directions from a distance. Photo by Diana Zimmerman...

Shellfish managers with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) recently announced 62 tentative dates for razor clam digs at beaches along the Washington coast beginning in mid-September and running through the end of the year. Final approval of tentatively scheduled openings depends on results of marine toxin tests. Much of the 2020-21 razor clam season was impacted by high domoic acid levels, but this year’s season so far is looking good, both in terms of clam abundance and domoic acid, according Dan Ayres, coastal shellfish m...

SOME DAMPNESS--Our past weekend was pretty nice, after thick fog in the morning hours. A couple days prior to that though, we had some "heavy mist" here and I thought that was just great! Not everybody got damp like we did west of Skamokawa, but hey, I'll gladly take any moisture that comes our way these days. This week's forecast is for some pretty decent days with a few clouds but warming up by the time you read this. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from Sept. 2-8 are Quin Bassi, Tristan Collupy, Glenn Wiest, Kathy McNally, Chuck...
School Starts Today! It's an exciting day so let's sit on the porch, get you some coffee and catch up. From Darlene Bjornsgard after Carol Penttila's celebration on Saturday: "It was a beautiful day, with so many sharing a beautiful, delicious meal catered by Travis and Jennifer Ullako Boggs, followed by a bountiful dessert buffet prepared by family and friends. We enjoyed visiting with so many we hadn't seen for a long while. Carol was dearly loved and will be missed." Robert Pyle was invited...

"This will be the best, and one of the only such systems in southwest Washington," Cathlamet Town Council Member David Olson said. Photo courtesy of Steve Carson....

COOLER--We have started out this week with some morning drizzle, which was nice to settle the dust for a bit and give the leaf feeding plants a little moisture, so that was great. However, it's usually back to dryness by noon and depending on where you were, it was either "mostly cloudy" or "mostly sunny" as we all know that the weather from Skamokawa to Cathlamet can be completely different on any given day! If weather models hold up, the weekend may actually be sunnier and warmer, so I'm sure that would be great for all of those trying to get...
Dear Readers: Good morning. Have you poured a cup of coffee to read the paper? I can't start my day without it. We sure had a busy, fun weekend. Great to have the fair open again. The Loggers Reunion went well. But I feel fall coming in the mornings making it chilly for me to drink my coffee on the back porch. Ben, my dog, likes it when I start the day out there with him. And I like being out there. Cold mornings mean I can't hear the morning radio on KMUN through the open door. Bummer....

It has been two years since our last show, due to covid. It was so nice to see everyone again. We had a very nice turnout of 16 riders. Nine of those riders also rode in the 50/50 Texas Barrels jackpot. To have 16 riders when there were two other shows going on the same day was very good indeed. As it was set up this year you had to ride in all five shows to qualify for the series high point award. Because we had no riders in the Pee-wee class and also no riders in the 36 and over class, those riders will just have to ride in the next four...
