  • Access to literature broadens young minds

    Sep 29, 2022

To The Eagle: One of the ‘side effects’ of keeping an open mind is that scammers, shifty politicians and other professional liars keep trying to toss their trash into it. They depend upon people believing just about anything. Consider these few examples. 1- Critical Race Theory (CRT): Dishonest political opportunists push two lies about this. First, that CRT is all about White people being oppressors while Black people remain oppressed victims. The other lie is that CRT, a university level subject matter, is being taught to children in gra...

  • Another idle threat?

    Sep 29, 2022

To The Eagle: Since the police department doesn’t usually enforce parking in Cathlamet, will they have to start when we are limited to two hours? Or is this another idle threat? Maybe we could hire a meter maid. Michael Nunes Cathlamet...

  • Only love of people can protect the innocent

    Sep 29, 2022

To The Eagle: I am not interested in opinions, mine or other people’s. I am more interested in truth and facts. I have found in living 78 years that truth is not always easy to accept and harder to live. Seems to me there are two power sources of information and truth. The positive or negative which seems to govern lives either toward good or evil. I have spent way too much of my life in the negative, even after I read what Jesus taught about truth. He heard the voice of His Father God and taught us truth. Or we can turn toward deceptions w...

  • If that shoe fits, wear it

    Sep 22, 2022

To The Eagle: I’ve been chastised for “name calling” after supporting President Biden’s statement that while not all MAGA supporters are fascists, the movement’s ideology certainly leans that way. MAGA , like fascism, scorns liberalism’s emphasis on reason, the rule of law, individual autonomy, and pluralistic representative democracy. Fascism is typically rooted in the cult of a “supreme leader.” MAGA both worships and fears its swaggering paragon. Fascism’s most extreme expression were the Nazis. My late father, a 100% disabled vet, fou...

  • Group thanks staff at public swimming pool

    Sep 22, 2022

To The Eagle: As summer draws to a close, we want to publicly thank the amazing staff at the Julia Butler Hansen Swimming Pool. The youngest generation of Neilson children had the great fortune to practice ice cream scoop arms, beaver dives, frog kicks and starfish floats under the skilled and watchful eyes of the Cathlamet swim coaches and lifeguards. The kids adored their joyful and kind approach while the grown-ups appreciated the life-saving water skills they imparted. We watched from the same bleachers where Dave and Laverne once cheered...

  • A look at how inflation affects property is offered

    Sep 22, 2022

To The Eagle: It seems there is a lot of conversation about inflation lately. Maybe we can illustrate what it means locally by using the assessor’s figures for property taxes applied to 100 foot waterfront lots. We will begin with a 100 foot lot from 1969 being valued at $250. I myself have a 100 foot waterfront lot assessed just a few days ago at $211,000 rounded off for easy arithmetic (my kind of arithmetic). If someone in 1969 had $211,000 to buy 100 foot waterfront lots he would have 844 of these lots which would amount to 15.98 miles o...

  • Public trust lacking in mRNA vaccines

    Sep 22, 2022

To The Eagle: A PhD. asked “how science communicators might restore public trust?” Answer is simple, logical and ignored by medical administrators, vaccine manufacturers, politicians and media. All science communicators must tell the truth, the whole truth and be 100% honest about the science from all research and study findings worldwide. When “science communicators” pick and choose which science to embrace, and which science to ignore and then try to silence it; that destroys any public trust. In science, to avoid prejudiced pseudo-...

  • Study candidates, vote for the best people

    Sep 15, 2022

To The Eagle: Wake up people of USA--voters and a recent writer: Seems there are too many following information from social networks, not bothering with a little research, which is so readily available to us all. Seems some still don’t think covid was real. [Former President Trump] 45 has endorsed some candidates who deny democracy. The 2020 election was a great message from voters. Sadly, many from the losing side are now not believing in democracy and the vote. The counting and recounting, even with 45’s special ninjas, found no fraud against...

  • Republicans, What have you become?

    Sep 15, 2022

To The Eagle: I use to think Republicans and Democrats shared common values that ran deeper than party affiliation. And although I am a Democrat, I admit to having voted Republican when the GOP candidate was the better choice. However, I’ve noted the change in the GOP these last 10-years and realize that our values are very different. Ten years ago I saw Tea Party Republicans holding signs that portrayed president Obama as a monkey and heard their talk of revolution. I ignored those Republicans back then, believing they did not represent the v...

  • WCERS question

    Sep 15, 2022

To The Eagle: A question we often hear is: " I don't like more taxes, but since this is not a property tax, and since rebuilding our emergency radio system is vital, I am for it. How do we really know the money won't be siphoned off to pay for something else?" The short answer has two parts: 1) State law says it can't be used for anything else: RCW 82.14.420. Look it up. 2) the county prosecuting attorney is required to verify the correct use of any money spent from this, and to sign his name to it. If you have any other questions on the...

  • There must be a limit to tolerance

    Sep 15, 2022

To The Eagle: “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof. . .” Therein is guaranteed religious tolerance in our open, secular society. Religion is to be tolerated, within limits. Those limits have been exceeded. Religion’s “free exercise thereof” has abused the limits of reasonable people’s tolerance in this fraught era now endangered by a Supreme Court that factors religious dogma into its decisions. Once a legal system is subservient to such dogma, an open society faces extin...

  • Writer has issues with name calling

    Sep 15, 2022

To The Eagle: Dear Sir, I was under the impression that you, the Editor, would no longer print letters full of misinformation. When I read last week’s letter from Mr. Bouchard I had to assume you were on vacation and out of the office for that letter to get published. The letter was full of so much misinformation I found it hard to accept even a Liberal could believe that bunch of baloney, or should I say malarkey, like the term President Biden often uses. President Trump did more for this country in his four years in office than Biden in h...

  • Get the government's foot off our neck

    Sep 8, 2022

To The Eagle: I loved reading Dr. Ben Carson’s comment regarding Covid-19: "Interestingly enough, when you think about the beginnings of our country, people came here so that they could be free, so that they wouldn't have the government's foot on their neck, mandating what they could and could not do. This covid situation has been the best mechanism government has had for controlling the people ever and they're very reluctant to let it go." What a true statement. This is the time to ask yourself who really are the insurrectionists? If you w...

  • Biden called them as he saw them

    Sep 8, 2022

To The Eagle: Joe Biden knew what a thankless task his presidency would be, yet he stepped up and firmly grasped that nettle, instead of retiring from a lifetime of federal politics. During his long public service, he learned. He evolved through personal acumen, with compassion, and innate decency. He responded to his party’s call to oppose an authoritarian presidential bully who was ultimately defeated by voter’s hopes that Biden could restore that decency to the leadership of this nation. Ending the fruitless 20 year crusade against Afghanist...

  • Fate of Democracy hangs on your ballot

    Sep 1, 2022

To The Eagle: The fate of free and fair elections in the United States hangs in the balance in this November’s midterm contests. In races for those offices with authority over US elections, Republicans have nominated anti-democracy candidates who have embraced or echoed Donald Trump’s myth of a stolen election in 2020. In the once-sleepy down-ballot contests for secretary of state, Trump loyalists are targeting positions that will play a critical role in supervising the next presidential election, with intent to turn the secretary of state con...

  • Previous conspiracies later proven as fact

    Aug 18, 2022

To The Eagle: Censorship is still alive and well on the editorial pages of The Wahkiakum County Eagle. The following comments are in regard to your Letter to the Editor policy changes published in the July 14th edition. Yes, as publisher and editor of the WCE, I agree you have full control of what you permit to be printed. But who decides what is “disinformation?” History has shown us many times that what is considered disinformation or conspiracy theory by individuals and institutions in their day, when explored by historians and other inv...

  • Give them something to whine about

    Aug 18, 2022

To The Eagle: Once again with the FBI’s raid on Mar-A-Lago, the Democrats and Liberals, even some of the Republicans are like two year olds with temper tantrums; they just keep whining. What appalls me the most besides the continuous harassment on Donald Trump and us; they are using our money for their own political agenda; billions and trillions of our money to Ukraine and other foreign affairs, hiring 87,000 armed IRS agents (why?) and the list goes on, nothing beneficial for America but to use us as slaves. As a parent, when you have a c...

  • Our tax dollars at work

    Aug 18, 2022

To The Eagle: Joe Biden wants to hire 86,852 new IRS agents; that would more than double the amount of IRS agents we now pay to come after our money. Let’s put that in perspective: Eighty six thousand eight hundred fifty two is nearly two and a half times the population of Longview. You could not put 86,852 IRS agents all in the ATT stadium. They would overflow the Seahawks Lumen Field by 18,112. Eighty six thousand eight hundred fifty two IRS agents would be more than the entire personnel on all 11 U.S. aircraft carriers. These IRS agents w...

  • Look forward to worldwide famine

    Aug 18, 2022

To The Eagle: I read an article “The True Evil of the World Economic Forum” in the American Thinker the other day. According to the article Klaus Schwab, a billionaire elitist, has plans for world domination. His motto is “You’ll own nothing and be happy.” Placing my focus only on the United States I would like to know how he and his elitist friends plan to take the personal property of all Americans. As far as I can tell our Second Amendment currently stands in their way. What an inconvenience! So, what’s their backup plan? It seems their...

  • Vote YES for the WCERS** Initiative

    Aug 18, 2022

To The Eagle: As the chairs of both county parties, we want to thank Sheriff Howie for attending our party meetings this past week, and explaining the communications sales and use tax that will be on our ballot in November. Yes, we are already heavily taxed, however, this is a specific tax to Wahkiakum County that will benefit the safety of our citizens and our first responders! It is not a property tax. Our communication systems are outdated. They don't have the coverage we need to be safe. The last update was in 2005, and it was only a...

  • Time to bring civics back to classroom

    Aug 18, 2022

To The Eagle: Our challenge as citizens is to not go down the rabbit hole leading to chaos and civil war. Let us not forget the rallying cry of Germany in 1939 was Germany First while on our shores there were more than just a few proclaiming America First. The American hue and cry died down after our country entered WWII. The same forces then are back with the same mantra and goals except the current crop seems to either have forgotten or rather chooses to ignore where the rabbit hole ended up. For the non interested let me remind them that...

  • What a week!

    Rick Nelson|Aug 11, 2022

Last week turned out to be an exciting week for Eagle staff. You should know that we plan ahead to make sure we cover local events, such as the Finnish American Folk Festival that occurred July 29-31 in Naselle. Reporter Diana Zimmerman already had a series of interviews planned for the weekend, but western Wahkiakum/Naselle correspondent Karen Bertroch said she would be happy to cover the event for The Eagle. I have a compromised immune system and avoid crowds. And when Friday rolled around, I became concerned about my health. My lower left...

  • It's called the opinion page for a reason

    Aug 11, 2022

To The Eagle: “If folks want to announce how they feel,” said the man, “let them do so in a paid ad, not a letter to the editor. They can print and mail their own broadsheet to county residents.” What condescending claptrap. This is a small local newspaper, not the Scientific American magazine. Most contributors write from the heart, not from a peer reviewed database. Such ‘educated elites’ might opine that we rural bumpkins are better seen than heard. Our loggers, farmers, ranchers and fishermen, homemakers, local professionals, minimum wag...

  • Democrats persecuting insignificant protesters

    Aug 11, 2022

To The Eagle: Crazy times we are living in, no? Prices for everything are soaring; the national debt has been raised again while we send billions to Ukraine in the newest forever war. Our strategic debacle in Afghanistan has our own military turning on its own with politicized brass more worried about the politics of soldiers than the threat of foreign armies. Our public schools across the country continue to repay poor academic performance with less STEM and civics and more gender bending curriculum. The summer riots of 2020, in which 30...

  • Living in the USA

    Aug 11, 2022

To The Eagle: It’s painfully clear that the Covid pandemic has caused deaths, to not only people, but sadly also some small businesses that fell through the cracks, getting the help from Biden’s Rescue Plan. Our dependence on parts from all over the world, which had the same problems, is slowly getting back on track. Jobs are at an all time high, with rising wages, though not keeping up with inflation. Gas is finally going back down. I’d like to know why, as there were massive profits for oil companies. Democrats and Biden have a bill in progr...
