To The Eagle: A Miami, Fla., private school chain, the Centner Academies, has informed its staff and teachers that anyone receiving their covid vaccination will not be permitted to interact with students and faculty. Teachers vaccinated over the summer were told not to return. School co-owner Lila Center, notable for previously promoting anti-vaccine propaganda, has in a statement to students' parents, repeated false claims that vaccinated people “may be transmitting something from their bodies” leading to adverse reproductive issues among wome...
To The Eagle: Last week's Eagle letters were dominated by the AARP, in this case standing for the Association of Alternative Reality Proponents. Much ado was made about "mitigating the slaughter" by guns. Cars kill more people than guns. Gun suicides kill more people than gun homicides. The majority of suicides are old white males. Eighty percent of black homicides are committed by angry young black men. So you could mitigate the slaughter by disarming sad old white men and angry young black men, but neither of those categories raise red flags...
Contributed by Sarah Lawrence This month marks the 51st Anniversary of the first National Autism Awareness Month established by the Autism Society in April 1970. Autism is defined as a serious developmental disorder that impairs the ability to communicate and interact. The range and severity of symptoms can vary widely. Common symptoms include difficulty with communication, difficulty with social interactions, obsessive interests, and repetitive behaviors. In 2020, the Centers for Disease Control reported that approximately one in 54 children i...
To The Eagle: We are now over a year into the Covid 19 pandemic. In the early days of the pandemic, we could only prevent infection by masks, washing hands and surfaces and distancing from others. These measures helped but were not extremely effective. We now have vaccines and they have been safe and effective and have the potential to eventually end the pandemic. Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are 90 percent plus effective at preventing disease. The vaccines are safe. The side effects are mild in most cases and are much safer than getting Covid 1...
To The Eagle: The county commissioners and sheriff have spoken. Essentially they have said that any adult may own as many as he/she wants of single shot and semi-automatic firearms with unlimited magazine capacity. That is a pretty bold statement, but unless they explicity define some limitations on that right, that is what we are stuck with. This is not the world that I would choose to live in nor do I believe that is the world that the commissioners and the sheriff want to live in. A more sensible role for these public servants would be to...
To The Eagle: Wahkiakum County Commissioners have adopted a resolution opposing infringement of rights guaranteed by the 2nd Amendment. I wonder how well they understand the boundaries of that “guarantee.” Former Supreme Court justice John Paul Stevens stated that for 200 years following the adoption of the Second Amendment, federal judges uniformly understood that the right protected by that text was limited in two ways. First, it limited the power of the federal government, but did not impose any limit whatsoever on the power of states or...
To The Eagle: After reading last week’s Eagle I realize the weekly Sheriff’s Report now has competition for entertainment value. There were a couple of beauties that stood out last week. The runner up was the article about the county commissioners adopting the gun resolution, as stated on the front page. I’m shocked at how tone deaf they are to what’s happening across America. Laws will eventually be passed to stop the daily, needless killings, and done without taking away our basic, 2nd amendment rights. We all know that. Hanging on to the...
To The Eagle: Once again a particular contributor has stated, not for the first time, that a face mask is useless in the fight against airborne infection. That’s simply not true. Why does this person cling to their ignorance? Why is the sky blue? So. Six hundred doctors disagreed with Dr. Fauci’s and the CDC’s methods for dealing with the pandemic and wrote letters about it. So what. Many thousands of other physicians in this country did not write such letters. They knew better and were too busy dealing with the effects of a pandemic made worse...
To The Eagle: Just a note to say that we have enjoyed reading about the Wahkiakum HS soon to graduate Seniors profiled in your “Meet Our Seniors” weekly feature. Diana Zimmerman has done a great job of interviewing each student and highlighting their interests and goals. Thank you, Eagle, for using color photos and designating ample column inches to feature each student individually. It is hoped that “Meet Our Seniors” will become a Wahkiakum County Eagle annual tradition. Sincerely, Carol Larson Grays River...
To The Eagle: In last week's paper, on the front page, it was noted that for some reason, the state was suddenly proposing to close the left turn access lane from SR 4, onto Una Street, which has certainly raised some eyebrows. Why on earth would they do that? Usually a big change like that would come due to a high volume of accidents or deaths at a particular "troubled spot" but considering this particular area has not been a place of multiple issues, why in the world would you eliminate that access? How are all those trucks and boats going...
To The Eagle: Once again, I am going back to the Big Lie, 45’s big lie of fraudulent and stolen election. As I said before, it lives on in the form of voter suppression in almost every state, including this one! Washington State has had all-mail voting since 2012. Republican lawmakers put forward two bills to curb or end all-mail voting and require voters to affirmatively request absentee ballots. How the heck do the Republicans keep getting voted in? Republican lawmakers are against so many proposals, which have, even a majority Republican v...
To The Eagle: The school board is proposing a crosswalk on SR 4 to the farm forest with all the bells and whistles! Are our few students that need to cross SR 4 so ill-equipped for the society they live in that they need a special crosswalk? Wouldn’t the money be better spent in fixing the school roof? PJ Fleury Puget Island...
To The Eagle: Kudos and commendations to our county commissioners for taking a stand to protect our second amendment rights. This is appropriate and timely for reasons beyond the obvious one: the Biden administration’s massive gun grab by both executive action and legislative proposal. The second amendment starts with the words “a well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State,” alluding to the fact that if the central government gets out of control, as is happening now, the individual states need their militia to protec...
To The Eagle: What do Glenda & Bud Duling, owner of Stuffy’s, Marlena Pavlos-Hackney, owner of Marleno’s Bistro & Pizzeria have in common? They and countless like them defied the CCP virus pandemic restrictions by opening their businesses. Sadly all were treated like criminals; they were arrested, hauled into court and were ordered to pay heavy penalties all because they were not essentials. Yet the employees working in the government offices and big stores like Amazon, Fred Meyers are essential? Who considered who is essential? Hell’s bells...
To The Eagle: Last year, in May 2020, President Trump received letters from over 600 doctors. They criticized how Fauci’s past and current lockdowns caused thousands to suffer negative health consequences including deaths; that Fauci manipulated the FDA to suppress HCQ that could’ve prevented many deaths; that wearing masks does nothing to prevent Covid. Because of these letters, President Trump did not mandate lockdowns and wearing masks. That said, if President Trump followed doctors’ advice, why didn’t the governors follow? They all knew. I...
To The Eagle: The 2021 Senate will soon be debating HR-1, the “For The People Act,” designed to reform and fortify our republic’s democratic voting system. Its features would expand, improve and enforce equity and transparency in federal elections. HR-1 promotes same day voter registration as well as online registration and would make election day a federal holiday. Voting rights would be restored to citizens with prior felony convictions. It would expand early voting and offers absentee /mail-in voting unconditionally to all U.S. citizens. Non...
To The Eagle: There was a puzzling dearth of letters in last week’s Eagle. Expectations were high that the merry band of critics who dedicated so much time warning us of the perils of the Trump tyranny would be out in full force to celebrate the spectacular successes of the Biden regime, accomplished in a dazzling 60 day performance: 57 executive orders, notices, administrative orders and security memos, saving us from Trump’s dastardly plots. The child cages on our southern border are humming along at 1500% of their capacity. We’ve welco...
To The Eagle: The Republican party has captured a historic majority of governorships and legislatures in the nation. Their electoral success has largely been the result of applying the principles of “Jim Crow Lite” not only upon identifiable minorities, but everyone else in the country as well. That “Lite” treatment typically involves barely legal, and on occasion, recognizably illegal electoral re-districting notoriously known as gerrymandering. Another seasonal favorite is the egregious purging of voter rolls. Not allowing authorized third p...
To The Eagle: Having coached track and field at Wahkiakum High School from 1966 to 2001, one of my responsibilities was to keep accurate records; keeping in mind what is required to make records valid, e.g., two clocks on running events, wind aided (on sprints) etc. There are several records on the board in the high school gym. These records (available on www.waheagle.com) are correct. Also, I would like to see the track trophies in a display case in the hall instead of gathering dust in some closest. To The Eagle: I find myself in my 78th year more confused than ever and it's not alzheimer's. I'm not sure if I'm a conservative liberal or a liberal conservative. I firmly believe, although it's really not my business being a man, that all women should have total control over their reproductive issues. The right to life until birth folks are way off base on social issues. The planet’s population is straining the natural resources nearly to the breaking point so go forth and multiply might have worked at one time but is ridiculous now. The s...
To The Eagle: The Archdiocese of New Orleans last week released a statement advising Catholics that the Johnson & Johnson vaccine is “morally compromised as it uses an abortion-derived cell line in the development, testing and production of its vaccine.” The cell line used by Johnson & Johnson originated from a fetus aborted in the early 1970s. Those cells have been artificially replicated 1000's of times across many scientific firms and pharmaceutical companies. Any such cellular material has only a vanishingly distant connection to its ori...
To The Eagle: Excuse me sir, I did not suggest restricting free speech. I advocated separating the wheat from the chaff. I prefer to see printed here, items of quality. Naturally, what one considers trash, another might consider to be treasure. Our opinion forum has limited space. Only so many words will fit. When the editor sets my opinion aside so that another’s might be published instead, that is not censorship. That is editorial discretion. I’ve suggested that our editor’s discretion should favor civility over derision and facts over fanta...
To The Eagle: A contributor recently stated his opinion that our country’s Constitution was “divinely inspired.” That brings to mind the oft mentioned fallacy that America was founded as a Christian nation. Evangelicals misinterpret references to God in the words of the Founding Fathers. Those who insist that America was founded as a Christian nation run roughshod over the historical record, one example of which is The Treaty of Tripoli, approved by Congress in 1797, which declared that “. . . the Government of the United States of America...
To The Eagle: I rarely write a letter to the editor, but last week something really struck me odd. A lady wrote "Why, Mr. Editor, do you print such rubbish instead of the informative interesting stuff? Having served in the military and being a red blooded flag waving American I totally believe in the first amendment. But the lady wanting the editor to restrict free speech and only print what she considers informative is why our country is splitting right down the middle. She reminds me of my niece from California that said the Constitution...
To The Eagle: We often take much for granted in our daily routines and along comes a severe storm. Our road crews, PUD crews and law enforcement are out risking life and limb to repair and maintain our roads and power systems so emergency vehicles can transport along with providing needed power for life saving equipment. The next time you might complain about our dedicated professionals serving our communities, stop and remember the risk they put themselves in to help us be safe. Take a moment when the opportunity presents itself to say thank...
