To The Eagle: On behalf of the Cathlamet Fire Department, we would like to thank our community for entrusting us with your emergency medical services. We consider it a privilege and an honor to render care for you and your family when you are experiencing a medical emergency. Because we live in a rural community, we are often faced with transport decisions that are determined by the nature of the call combined with our protocols. In order to maintain the highest quality of patient care, there may be times that requesting Life Flight for...
To the Eagle: Our president dithers while the middle east burns, health care tanks, border leakage reaches crisis levels, and the economy remains anemic. The Republicans are casting about for a new Ronald Reagan to solve our problems. I personally would settle for a new Herbert Hoover, or anyone who knows how to build stuff. Somehow our various governments have become slaves to the silly notion that you can solve problems by passing laws. Big problems require big complicated laws. My grandma called that wishful thinking. School shootings? Pass...

Independence Day is in two weeks already. With that in mind I want to remind folks of the state law that provides the guidelines as to when they may be discharged. Last year we had an increase in the number of complaints regarding the types of fireworks discharged as well as the time they continued beyond what state law allows. Here is the law, RCW 70.77.395 in a nutshell when it comes to consumer use: Consumer fireworks may be used or discharged each day between Noon to 11 p.m. on June 28, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on June 29 through July 3, 9 a.m. to...
To The Eagle: In response to Dixie Kolditz’s accusation of lying (Letters, June 5), I need to set the record straight. Why would I ever need to make up accusations against Jaime Herrera Beutler when her voting record is as awful as it is? On the campaign trail, I have asserted that Herrera Beutler violated her promise to cut up the credit cards in DC. In fact, she has voted to increase the debt limit. (Roll call vote #550 10/16/13) . She has indeed voted to give the president of the United States the power to detain indefinitely an i...
To The Eagle: This is intended for the people and voters of Wahkiakum County. I am a lifelong member and supporter of law enforcement, the Republican Party, the US Constitution, and especially the right of citizens to have differing views. On June 3, 2014, the Wahkiakum GOP had its regular meeting. In attendance were our regular members and the county commissioner representing Puget Island. During the meeting the commissioner listened but said nothing except that he wanted more people to come to the weekly commission meetings. The meeting...
To The Eagle: I just wanted to say what a wonderful response it was for the Self Help Housing meeting held on May 29 at the River Street Meeting Room. There were approximately 30 people in attendance and lots of people taking applications. This is such a great opportunity for our community to take part in such a worthwhile program. Juanita and Greg from Lower Columbia CAP did a great job of addressing a number of topics and questions. This included credit, income, who can put in time building and how much building is needed. They also...
To The Eagle: I have neglected for years to thank the publishers and staff of The Eagle. Sadly, I take it for granted that my paper will arrive on Thursday and I shouldn’t. None of us should take The Eagle for granted when printed news is threatened and small papers around the country are failing daily. I wish to thank The Eagle for their generations of continual dedication to our community. I am grateful for the clarity we find in our newspaper when reading The Eagle. As a reader I feel as though I am a participant in the ongoing issues c...
To The Eagle: Stop the school shootings now. Legislation can fund all the cameras, and bullet proof glass or even have staff trained with pistols. But until they fund more counselors and train staff to recognize and help troubled students these shootings will not stop. We must demand funding for more school counselors, now! Lee Tischer, Puget Island...
Last week, on Friday I believe, there was a top story on KATU news about a boy who was hit by a drunk driver after saving his friend. Kameron Howell-Meeker was walking down River Rd. in Milwaukie, Ore., when he heard some screeching and saw that a pick-up truck was swerving and heading directly for him and the girl (Ellie) he was walking with. He pushed Ellie out of the way, then was hit, thrown high in the air, did about three cart wheels and landed in a bloody mess on his face. He was rushed to OHSU Trauma Center, and that’s when I, his grand...
To The Eagle: Helping Hand Food Bank is looking for clean, resaleable items to be donated for a garage sale to be held May 23-24. To The Eagle: Here are some facts about drinking and driving for teenagers and adults to think about before you make the choice to drink and drive. ·The average blood alcohol content or concentration (BAC) among fatally injured drinking drivers is .16; ·The relative risk of death for drivers in single-vehicle crashes with a high BAC is 385 times that of a zero-BAC driver and for male drivers this risk is 707 times that of a sober driver, according to estimates by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). ·High BAC...
To the Eagle: I want to thank the three log truck drivers who slowed their rigs to avoid hitting a lost and terrified dog running up and down State Route 4 west of Skamokawa last week. I also thank Stuart and Tom Bosch, my neighbors. Stuart called me late in the evening to inquire whether I was missing a dog and then, in the dark and in heavy rain, attempted to lure the dog to safety. Tom helped the next day by encouraging the dog (I named him Hiker) to come toward me. After an hour, he finally did and I was able to tether him and walk him to...
To The Eagle: My name is Carol Wegdahl and most of you probably know me from my work at Columbia View Care Center and the Cathlamet Fire Department. Last year I was hired by PeaceHealth in Longview as the coordinator of the American Heart Association Training Center. One of the main duties is teaching CPR/AED classes to community members and medical professionals. Almost daily someone tells me a story of how heart disease or stroke has affected them or their loved ones. Some of these stories are sad, but many people tell me stories of loved...
To The Eagle: Your readers may be interested to know that I am resigning from Position #3 on the Cathlamet Town Council, effective April 30, 2014. My prior plan was to retire from Town service when my term as Mayor ended in December 2009. However, I was persuaded to return as Chairman of the Town Planning Commission for 2010-11, and then asked to run for Council for a 2012-15 term. Returning to the Council offered an opportunity to work on four goals that I believed were important to the Town: (1) Broker peace and restore communications...
To The Eagle: Wahkiakum County should permit the legal cultivation of marijuana and do so without further delay. Clearly, interest groups – including law enforcement and teen health advocates – favor a permanent ban, though it is unclear how that outcome would lower teen exposure to marijuana given that it will be grown elsewhere in the state and sold legally to adults. Two elements of the current debate concern me. First, opponents of cultivation are offering a one-sided analysis of the costs to our community. They say law...
To The Eagle: April is designated as National Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Sexual assault has been getting a lot of attention lately, from college campuses to the military to the nation’s capital and even on the popular PBS series “Downton Abbey.” I hope this attention will start a much needed conversation about sexual assault in our communities and homes. This is an issue that should concern all of us because any of us or our family members can be victims or perpetrators. According to President Barack Obama, “Sexual assault is an affront...
To The Eagle: What is it like to live near an LNG (liquefied natural gas) storage tank? Ask the families of Plymouth, WA who were evacuated from their homes this week. Emergency responders evacuated a two mile radius around the leaking LNG storage tank caused by a natural gas pipeline rupture and explosion. Let's see - what lies within two miles of the six times larger LNG terminal proposed for Warrenton, OR? Warrenton Elementary School, Coryell's Child Care Center, Warrenton Head Start, Fred Myer and the Warrenton Volunteer Fire Department....
To The Eagle: Women's History month is a time when we remember individual women who have been trail blazers for our nation. Individuals like Abigail Adams, Clara Barton, Rosa Parks, Amelia Earhart, and Sanda Day O'Connor changed the course of history and opened new doors for women. As co-chair of the Congressional Caucus for Women’s Issues, I am working on issues that matter to women and improve the lives of individuals and families across our nation. Here are just a few of my recent and ongoing efforts to improve opportunities for women in t...
To The Eagle: I am honored to be President of the United Way of Cowlitz and Wahkiakum Counties for 2014 - 2015! I sincerely appreciate the overwhelming confidence that you, the community, and the United Way Board of Directors has entrusted in me. I am very excited for the opportunity to continue serving and supporting our community through this new role. As you may know, the United Way of Cowlitz and Wahkiakum Counties exceeded our 2013 - 2014 campaign goal because of your generous donations. Thank you! The United Way envisions a world where...
