  • Former sheriff banned from office

    Aug 14, 2014

To The Eagle: On August 6, 2014, I received a phone call from Sheriff Mark Howie. He told me he didn’t want me in the Sheriff’s office any more. I had stopped at the window (the day before) after dropping off my ballot at the Auditor’s office and had a brief conversation with the corrections officers. He told me he was told I was in the office and he didn’t want me there anymore. It was a very unpleasant conversation. Sheriff Howie has decided I am special and he has to call me at home to harass and threaten me, at least I perceived it as such...

  • Local businessman endorses Howie

    Aug 14, 2014

To The Eagle: Mark Howie and I do not agree on every issue facing Wahkiakum County, but he will respectfully listen to my position on a given issue and is willing to explore possible areas of agreement. He is a dedicated and responsible public servant, who is responsive to the community. I did and will vote for Mark Howie because he respects his fellow citizens and I cannot think of a better reason to give him my vote. Ian Chisholm, Puget Island...

  • Corrections, Clarifications

    Aug 14, 2014

In our special section published last week, Cathlamet Downhill Corral, we incorrectly identified a young lady on page 2; she is Rowan Silver Fox. In another story, we incorrectly identified a teacher. She is Jamie Cothren not Jamie Morace Dallas....

  • Grand Marshal thanks community

    Aug 7, 2014
    2

To The Eagle: It was my pleasure to serve you as Grand Marshal for the Bald Eagle Days Festival Parade. I want to thank each of you for your support for this wonderful community activity. There is no way that I have the words to put you into my seat for the parade. Coming down Columbia Street with my drivers, Chelsea and Ashley, and slowly approaching Main Street, the crowd noise and numbers grew with each passing few feet. My heart was bursting with pride as spectators cheered yet another Bald Eagle Day Parade. There was love and laughter on...

  • Puget Island Garage and Yard Sale founders say goodbye

    Jul 31, 2014

To The Eagle: About 13 years ago, the wife and I started the Puget Island Garage & Yard Sales, now known as PIGYS. It was a way for us (Islanders), for a paltry $10, to afford ads in eight newspapers, posters in seven counties, numerous sites on the internet and word of mouth galore. This event was visited by mainlanders from at least two states every year, and sometimes more. I have been lucky and proud to live in a community like this. People helping people. Brag about it wherever I go. Never had it this good. One difference from any other...

  • Fire victims doing well with everyone's help

    Jul 24, 2014

To The Eagle: As many of you know, we had a disastrous house fire on July 9 at our home on Altoona-Pillar Rock Rd. I want everyone to know that we are going to be fine, thanks to the love and generosity of so many friends, neighbors and family. It is humbling to be loved by so many. We would like to thank the wonderful people from all the fire departments who responded to this fire. Thanks, guys, for saving Shirley Cantrell's (age 92) new home next to mine and also for saving the mountainside and our shop. The house wasn't so lucky, but we will...

  • Change is coming for Eagle readers

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Jul 24, 2014

We have some changes in store for readers of The Wahkiakum County Eagle. By the end of the month, we're going to launch a new website. This will have little effect for readers of our print edition, but for readers who follow us online, we have good and bad new. First the good news: The new website will have more content. It will be easier to navigate. It will have formats for PC's, tablets, pads and phones. We'll be uploading stories and photos more often than we do now. The bad news is that at some point, and even though I hate to do it,...

  • Fire chief offers insurance information

    Jul 17, 2014

To The Eagle: On behalf of the Cathlamet Fire Department, we would like to thank our community for entrusting us with your emergency medical services. We consider it a privilege and an honor to render care for you and your family when you are experiencing a medical emergency. Because we live in a rural community, we are often faced with transport decisions that are determined by the nature of the call combined with our protocols. In order to maintain the highest quality of patient care, there may be times that requesting Life Flight for...

  • Writer's advice: Go build something

    Jul 17, 2014

To the Eagle: Our president dithers while the middle east burns, health care tanks, border leakage reaches crisis levels, and the economy remains anemic. The Republicans are casting about for a new Ronald Reagan to solve our problems. I personally would settle for a new Herbert Hoover, or anyone who knows how to build stuff. Somehow our various governments have become slaves to the silly notion that you can solve problems by passing laws. Big problems require big complicated laws. My grandma called that wishful thinking. School shootings? Pass...

  • Citizen pleads for community support

    Jul 10, 2014

To The Eagle: I am writing in regard to the need of items for the arts and craft room at the Finnish American Folk Festival held in Naselle. This room is for display of: needlework including quilts, woodwork, metal work, wreaths, candles, floral arrangements, birdhouses or any art or craft you may have. These can be heirloom items or something recently made. Please attach information stating who made it and when (if applicable) and any other pertinent information. We will be setting up on Tuesday, July 22 and Thursday, July 24 from 10-3. If...

  • The Sheriff's Corner

    Sheriff Mark Howie|Jun 18, 2014

Independence Day is in two weeks already. With that in mind I want to remind folks of the state law that provides the guidelines as to when they may be discharged. Last year we had an increase in the number of complaints regarding the types of fireworks discharged as well as the time they continued beyond what state law allows. Here is the law, RCW 70.77.395 in a nutshell when it comes to consumer use: Consumer fireworks may be used or discharged each day between Noon to 11 p.m. on June 28, 9 a.m. to 11 p.m. on June 29 through July 3, 9 a.m. to...

  • Candidate responds to writer's comments

    Jun 18, 2014

To The Eagle: In response to Dixie Kolditz’s accusation of lying (Letters, June 5), I need to set the record straight. Why would I ever need to make up accusations against Jaime Herrera Beutler when her voting record is as awful as it is? On the campaign trail, I have asserted that Herrera Beutler violated her promise to cut up the credit cards in DC. In fact, she has voted to increase the debt limit. (Roll call vote #550 10/16/13) . She has indeed voted to give the president of the United States the power to detain indefinitely an i...

  • Writer questions commissioner's actions

    Jun 11, 2014

To The Eagle: This is intended for the people and voters of Wahkiakum County. I am a lifelong member and supporter of law enforcement, the Republican Party, the US Constitution, and especially the right of citizens to have differing views. On June 3, 2014, the Wahkiakum GOP had its regular meeting. In attendance were our regular members and the county commissioner representing Puget Island. During the meeting the commissioner listened but said nothing except that he wanted more people to come to the weekly commission meetings. The meeting...

  • Self Help Housing program has openings

    Jun 11, 2014

To The Eagle: I just wanted to say what a wonderful response it was for the Self Help Housing meeting held on May 29 at the River Street Meeting Room. There were approximately 30 people in attendance and lots of people taking applications. This is such a great opportunity for our community to take part in such a worthwhile program. Juanita and Greg from Lower Columbia CAP did a great job of addressing a number of topics and questions. This included credit, income, who can put in time building and how much building is needed. They also...

  • Reader grateful for opportunity to disagree

    Jun 11, 2014

To The Eagle: I have neglected for years to thank the publishers and staff of The Eagle. Sadly, I take it for granted that my paper will arrive on Thursday and I shouldn’t. None of us should take The Eagle for granted when printed news is threatened and small papers around the country are failing daily. I wish to thank The Eagle for their generations of continual dedication to our community. I am grateful for the clarity we find in our newspaper when reading The Eagle. As a reader I feel as though I am a participant in the ongoing issues c...

  • Funding needed now for school counselors

    Jun 11, 2014

To The Eagle: Stop the school shootings now. Legislation can fund all the cameras, and bullet proof glass or even have staff trained with pistols. But until they fund more counselors and train staff to recognize and help troubled students these shootings will not stop. We must demand funding for more school counselors, now! Lee Tischer, Puget Island...

  • Grandson recovering from hit and run

    Kathi Howell, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 21, 2014

Last week, on Friday I believe, there was a top story on KATU news about a boy who was hit by a drunk driver after saving his friend. Kameron Howell-Meeker was walking down River Rd. in Milwaukie, Ore., when he heard some screeching and saw that a pick-up truck was swerving and heading directly for him and the girl (Ellie) he was walking with. He pushed Ellie out of the way, then was hit, thrown high in the air, did about three cart wheels and landed in a bloody mess on his face. He was rushed to OHSU Trauma Center, and that’s when I, his grand...
