To The Eagle: On August 6, 2014, I received a phone call from Sheriff Mark Howie. He told me he didn’t want me in the Sheriff’s office any more. I had stopped at the window (the day before) after dropping off my ballot at the Auditor’s office and had a brief conversation with the corrections officers. He told me he was told I was in the office and he didn’t want me there anymore. It was a very unpleasant conversation. It was a way for us (Islanders), for a paltry $10, to afford ads in eight newspapers, posters in seven counties, numerous sites on the internet and word of mouth galore. Independence Day is in two weeks already. With that in mind I want to remind folks of the state law that provides the guidelines as to when they may be discharged.
