  • Friday night slights

    Oct 8, 2015

To The Eagle: I attended my first Wahkiakum High School football game this past week. The effort by the Wahkiakum players was really something to see and admire. It was apparent how much work and dedication the players and coaches put into the football program. The cheerleaders do a number of difficult routines all game long in nearly flawless unison. I am sure they must practice and work hard and long to accomplish that. The student (Micca Cothren) who sang the National Anthem was amazing. The large number of family, friends and fans of these...

  • Former mayor offers two options for water

    Oct 8, 2015

To the Editor: Cathlamet’s Town Council made the right decision when it opted to begin the process of replacing the intake at the water plant. Nonetheless, I fear this might not dissuade the Department of Health from limiting the number of new connections. The DOH is pushing not just for system improvements, but for the town and the PUD to resolve their longstanding contract dispute. That will happen in one of two ways: the PUD will agree to a deal that adequately compensates the town for its water, or opt instead to build its own water plant t...

  • Deadline approaching for dock, piling work

    Oct 1, 2015

To The Eagle: This is a little heads-up for those thinking about installing a new dock or ramp piling. The allowable time frame allowed is October 1st through December 31st for any work done over the water. An application (JARPA) can be obtained through the Wahkiakum Building Department or downloaded from the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife website. I also recommend that the instructions also be downloaded. If this is something that is being considered for this year, then time is of the essence. It will take at a minimum 25 days and...

  • September is Disaster Preparedness Month

Beau Renfro, Coordinator, Department of Emergency Management|Sep 17, 2015

S This is the third part of the disaster preparedness series and this week I am going to discuss the components you will need to “Build a Kit.” A disaster supplies kit is simply a collection of basic items your household may need in the event of an emergency. Try to assemble your kit well in advance of an emergency. You may have to evacuate at a moment’s notice and take these essentials with you. You may need to survive on your own after an emergency. This means having your own food, water and other supplies in sufficient quantity to last...

  • Pinwheels for Peace project underway

    Sep 17, 2015

To The Eagle: Imagine “Whirled Peace.” In today’s world, peace needs to become more than just a word. On September 21, 2015, The Charlotte House, a program of St. James Family Center plans to take part in an international art and literacy project, Pinwheels for Peace by “planting” pinwheels with messages of peace. Pinwheels for Peace is an art project started in 2005 by two Art teachers in Florida, as a way for students to express their feelings about what’s going on in the world and in their lives. In the first year, groups in over 1,325...

  • When government doesn't meddle, capitalism wins

    Sep 17, 2015

To the Eagle: To get people and goods where they need to go requires horsepower, and manufacturing horsepower always creates pollution of some sort. Back in the good ol' days the only way to make horsepower was to use real horses, which caused manure pollution problems in big cities -- the bigger the city, the bigger the problem. By 1894, New York City had to try to dispose of three million pounds of horse manure per day, not to mention 40,000 gallons of horse urine and three dozen dead horses each day. It made for a stinky atmosphere, with...

  • Thinking about odds and ends

    Rick Nelson|Sep 10, 2015

Our community is coming off a series of well-planned, entertaining and rewarding community events. Just last week, volunteers and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post put on a fishing derby for veterans, widows of veterans, and children of veterans. Local anglers took them out on the river, and about half caught a salmon. The positive energy of the event was amazing, one skipper told me. Another said, "It might be bigger next year, but it won't be better." I don't know all the people who were involved, but when people like Bud Mickelsen, John...

  • Street vacation vote took the low road

    Aug 27, 2015
    1

To The Eagle: Cathlamet’s latest land giveaway was a predictable mistake. It followed a pattern of one-way gifting that in recent years has included a parking lot for Port District 1’s cabins, a big sewer rate discount for the marina, free plans for streetlight placement (paid for by the Town’s 2010 grant to re-illuminate Main Street) and now free land gained by vacating Beal Street to be used for unspecified “economic development” on the waterfront – most likely a parking lot for the brewery. The main architect of these transfers: David Goodr...

  • Scheduling overlap presents issues

    Aug 27, 2015

To The Eagle: What a shame that two very popular community events had to be scheduled for the same weekend. The county fair is a long standing tradition with events and entertainment for all ages, especially youth and 4-H. These youth are learning and exhibiting skills that will serve them well in the future. (Without farmers we would all starve). The skateboard competitions have also become a popular spectator event bringing a lot of visitors to the area. The problem is that this county does not have enough people to support two events at a ti...

  • Sense of community endangered by PUD

    Aug 20, 2015
    1

To The Eagle: The recent response by the PUD to Grays River residents Dave Henderson and Colleen Haley reminds me of a slightly risqué story – An attractive young lady was surprised by the amount of her bill when she was checking out of the hotel. When she asked why it was so high, the rather handsome desk clerk responded, “Well, we have a swimming pool and a sauna.” “But I didn’t use either of those,” the young lady said. “Ahh, but you could have,” replied the clerk. “We also have a very expensive fitness center,” continued the clerk....

  • DNR speaks to fire danger

    Aug 20, 2015

To The Eagle: As of August 11, there have been 751 fires on DNR-protected lands, with 628 of them caused by human activity. By this time last year, the state had seen 565 fires, with 455 of those human caused. To reduce that threat, DNR is looking to the public for help. Human-caused fires can be prevented if people take every precaution to not start a fire. People need to be aware of their surroundings at all times. If working with equipment in the yard, always be sure to have water available if a fire sparks. We can’t prevent l...

  • Skater offers appreciation

    Aug 20, 2015

To The Eagle: In light of the upcoming Cathlamet Downhill Corral this weekend, I want to say thank you to the people involved in raising money for the women's podium - not only for this year, but for last year as well. I've been attending and competing at the event on and off since 2011, and 2014 drew more women than ever out to race and even just to skate for fun. Encouraging women to come out and compete is so crucial for the development of the skateboarding community, and I appreciate that the residents of Cathlamet are so extremely...

  • Recyclables belong in bins, not on ground

    Aug 13, 2015

To The Eagle: So, you are privileged to live in the Pacific Northwest, in cute little Cathamet, and are a resident (or perhaps not) of beautiful Puget Island. You are also privileged to have a recycle station provided for your use in this wonderful area. So I am perplexed as to why you have decided that you are also privileged to leave your cardboard etc., on the ground, next to the bins when they are full. I don't recall seeing a sign that says "Please feel free to leave items that will not...

  • Vandalizing mailboxes is absolutely a crime

    Aug 13, 2015

To The Eagle: To the person or persons who vandalized and trashed the four mailboxes over the weekend of August 8 across from Fern Hill Road. Out of those four mailboxes, mine was the only one being used. The others are not being used because two neighbors are deceased and the other has moved. My question to you is this: What have I done to you that you would vandalize and trash our mailboxes? Where did you trash our mailboxes to? If you have any type of remorse or compassion in your heart, you would apologize to me face to face and replace my...

  • Artists thanked for efforts

    Aug 13, 2015

To The Eagle: A variety of our community signs have received some much needed TLC and a few fresh coats of paint. I’d like to personally thank Ms. Kim Sharp and others for recognizing the sign refurbishments on Puget Island and throughout Cathlamet. These wonderful signs were spruced up through a partnership with the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce and the talented efforts of local artists at the Tsuga Gallery. Through continued efforts, teamwork, and unity, all of us can continue to grow and improve Cathlamet and Wahkiakum County for future g...

  • From the desk of the JA Wendt PTO

    Aug 13, 2015

To The Eagle: Hello everyone. I do hope that everyone is having a wonderful summer, and making lots of memories. As you know the first day of school is fast approaching us and it is time to start buying all those school supplies and fresh new clothes. The Parent Teacher Organization wants to help out with some of the burden by allowing you to get the school supplies during conference time. The cost will be $25 and this will include a backpack. We would also like to send a reminder out that we will be having another Box Tops contest sometime dur...

  • Sheriff's Corner

    Sheriff Mark Howie|Aug 13, 2015

Our 6th deputy, Brian Hornback, is now graduated from the academy and on his field training with deputies on various shifts. Deputy Hornback graduated #1 in academics and #1 overall in a class of 30. He was competing against much larger agencies including Seattle PD, Clark County, and Vancouver PD. That is quite an accomplishment. Brian used to work as a corrections officer/dispatcher for the Sheriff’s Office. Now he is a welcomed member of patrol. You may have already noticed we now have deputies working longer hours into the evening and e...

  • Former mayor speaks to street vacation idea

    Aug 6, 2015

To The Eagle: Your coverage of the Town Council’s Beal Street debate was informative. However, my public comment on the issue – a warning about safety and traffic flows near the marina – wasn’t fully reflected in your story. With a large parcel of Town property (the former sewage lagoons) up for redevelopment, the Council should be thinking not only about today’s traffic patterns and usage, but about how Cathlamet’s waterfront might function 10, 20 or 30 years in the future. That isn’t happening. Indeed, the Town has got two related issue...

  • Landowner questions forest access decision

    Aug 6, 2015
    1

To The Eagle: I am a local landowner who has lived, worked and paid taxes in Wahkiakum County for most of my life. Cascade Hardwoods is wanting to purchase about 14.4 acres of alder from me. It was proposed to be logged by Olsen Logging and probably hauled by DeBriae. The logging was proposed to be done this summer and to be completed in about a two week period. Cascade Hardwoods request to access the road has been rejected by the school district. The school district wants an access trail built for the students. I’m not sure how many t...

  • Citizen discusses tax levies and RCWs

    Jul 30, 2015

To the Eagle: There are several RCWs regulating the amount of taxes which can be levied against properties by the various taxing districts. At the July 21, 2015 meeting of the Board of County Commissioners, two different levy limits were being discussed. I was discussing the 1% increase the county may add each year to the prior year’s levy amount. Assessor Bill Coons was discussing the maximum levy rate the county can have. Commissioner Backman was proposing a “levy lid lift” which is actually a lifting of the “1% lid” otherwise imposed b...

  • Creative management needed, not more taxes

    Jul 30, 2015

To the Eagle: Our county fair is dying from natural causes, chief among them being the steady geriatrification of our local population and the flight of agricultural enterprise to less restrictive, more profitable shores. There are possibilities for rejuvenation that have been suggested but remain untried. The fairground has unused acreage on the west side and undeveloped waterfront in the northeast corner, giving it the potential for a demolition derby, mud-a-thon, racing events, ox, horse, tractor, and doodlebug pulls, and aquatic activities...

  • Resident appreciates signage

    Jul 30, 2015

To The Eagle: Our signs for Puget Island and Cathlamet, and even Erikson Park have been redone and they look fabulous! Thank you so much to whomever worked to make these signs look new and beautiful. I smile every time I see one. I especially love the red barn on the Puget Island sign. Kim Sharp Puget Island...

  • People step up for Tsuga with Model T display

    Jul 30, 2015

To The Eagle: I want to send a thank you to a few people who stepped up for the gallery and the parade on Bald Eagle Days. I had mentioned to Ray Badger that we had a spot in front of the gallery and it would be cool to display a Model T out front because we have that Model T fender hanging over the gallery door. People could get a better idea of what it belonged to. Ray had Bill Ower bring his Model T truck to the gallery the Wednesday before the parade. David Goodroe measured the bed and said...
