To The Eagle: What a shame that two very popular community events had to be scheduled for the same weekend. The county fair is a long standing tradition with events and entertainment for all ages, especially youth and 4-H. These youth are learning and exhibiting skills that will serve them well in the future. (Without farmers we would all starve). The skateboard competitions have also become a popular spectator event bringing a lot of visitors to the area. The problem is that this county does not have enough people to support two events at a ti...
To The Eagle: The recent response by the PUD to Grays River residents Dave Henderson and Colleen Haley reminds me of a slightly risqué story – An attractive young lady was surprised by the amount of her bill when she was checking out of the hotel. When she asked why it was so high, the rather handsome desk clerk responded, “Well, we have a swimming pool and a sauna.” “But I didn’t use either of those,” the young lady said. “Ahh, but you could have,” replied the clerk. “We also have a very expensive fitness center,” continued the clerk....
To The Eagle: As of August 11, there have been 751 fires on DNR-protected lands, with 628 of them caused by human activity. By this time last year, the state had seen 565 fires, with 455 of those human caused. To reduce that threat, DNR is looking to the public for help. Human-caused fires can be prevented if people take every precaution to not start a fire. People need to be aware of their surroundings at all times. If working with equipment in the yard, always be sure to have water available if a fire sparks. We can’t prevent l...
To The Eagle: In light of the upcoming Cathlamet Downhill Corral this weekend, I want to say thank you to the people involved in raising money for the women's podium - not only for this year, but for last year as well. I've been attending and competing at the event on and off since 2011, and 2014 drew more women than ever out to race and even just to skate for fun. Encouraging women to come out and compete is so crucial for the development of the skateboarding community, and I appreciate that the residents of Cathlamet are so extremely...
To The Eagle: So, you are privileged to live in the Pacific Northwest, in cute little Cathamet, and are a resident (or perhaps not) of beautiful Puget Island. You are also privileged to have a recycle station provided for your use in this wonderful area. So I am perplexed as to why you have decided that you are also privileged to leave your cardboard etc., on the ground, next to the bins when they are full. I don't recall seeing a sign that says "Please feel free to leave items that will not...
To The Eagle: To the person or persons who vandalized and trashed the four mailboxes over the weekend of August 8 across from Fern Hill Road. Out of those four mailboxes, mine was the only one being used. The others are not being used because two neighbors are deceased and the other has moved. My question to you is this: What have I done to you that you would vandalize and trash our mailboxes? Where did you trash our mailboxes to? If you have any type of remorse or compassion in your heart, you would apologize to me face to face and replace my...
To The Eagle: A variety of our community signs have received some much needed TLC and a few fresh coats of paint. I’d like to personally thank Ms. Kim Sharp and others for recognizing the sign refurbishments on Puget Island and throughout Cathlamet. These wonderful signs were spruced up through a partnership with the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce and the talented efforts of local artists at the Tsuga Gallery. Through continued efforts, teamwork, and unity, all of us can continue to grow and improve Cathlamet and Wahkiakum County for future g...
To The Eagle: Hello everyone. I do hope that everyone is having a wonderful summer, and making lots of memories. As you know the first day of school is fast approaching us and it is time to start buying all those school supplies and fresh new clothes. The Parent Teacher Organization wants to help out with some of the burden by allowing you to get the school supplies during conference time. The cost will be $25 and this will include a backpack. We would also like to send a reminder out that we will be having another Box Tops contest sometime dur...
Our 6th deputy, Brian Hornback, is now graduated from the academy and on his field training with deputies on various shifts. Deputy Hornback graduated #1 in academics and #1 overall in a class of 30. He was competing against much larger agencies including Seattle PD, Clark County, and Vancouver PD. That is quite an accomplishment. Brian used to work as a corrections officer/dispatcher for the Sheriff’s Office. Now he is a welcomed member of patrol. You may have already noticed we now have deputies working longer hours into the evening and e...
To The Eagle: Your coverage of the Town Council’s Beal Street debate was informative. However, my public comment on the issue – a warning about safety and traffic flows near the marina – wasn’t fully reflected in your story. With a large parcel of Town property (the former sewage lagoons) up for redevelopment, the Council should be thinking not only about today’s traffic patterns and usage, but about how Cathlamet’s waterfront might function 10, 20 or 30 years in the future. That isn’t happening. Indeed, the Town has got two related issue...
To The Eagle: I am a local landowner who has lived, worked and paid taxes in Wahkiakum County for most of my life. Cascade Hardwoods is wanting to purchase about 14.4 acres of alder from me. It was proposed to be logged by Olsen Logging and probably hauled by DeBriae. The logging was proposed to be done this summer and to be completed in about a two week period. Cascade Hardwoods request to access the road has been rejected by the school district. The school district wants an access trail built for the students. I’m not sure how many t...
To the Eagle: There are several RCWs regulating the amount of taxes which can be levied against properties by the various taxing districts. At the July 21, 2015 meeting of the Board of County Commissioners, two different levy limits were being discussed. I was discussing the 1% increase the county may add each year to the prior year’s levy amount. Assessor Bill Coons was discussing the maximum levy rate the county can have. Commissioner Backman was proposing a “levy lid lift” which is actually a lifting of the “1% lid” otherwise imposed b...
To the Eagle: Our county fair is dying from natural causes, chief among them being the steady geriatrification of our local population and the flight of agricultural enterprise to less restrictive, more profitable shores. There are possibilities for rejuvenation that have been suggested but remain untried. The fairground has unused acreage on the west side and undeveloped waterfront in the northeast corner, giving it the potential for a demolition derby, mud-a-thon, racing events, ox, horse, tractor, and doodlebug pulls, and aquatic activities...
To The Eagle: Our signs for Puget Island and Cathlamet, and even Erikson Park have been redone and they look fabulous! Thank you so much to whomever worked to make these signs look new and beautiful. I smile every time I see one. I especially love the red barn on the Puget Island sign. Kim Sharp Puget Island...
To The Eagle: I want to send a thank you to a few people who stepped up for the gallery and the parade on Bald Eagle Days. I had mentioned to Ray Badger that we had a spot in front of the gallery and it would be cool to display a Model T out front because we have that Model T fender hanging over the gallery door. People could get a better idea of what it belonged to. Ray had Bill Ower bring his Model T truck to the gallery the Wednesday before the parade. David Goodroe measured the bed and said...
To The Eagle: If you are considering theft of any kind please consider the following before you act. Anything you take from someone else without permission or making payment for is theft. This is against the law to say the least. The first thing you need to realize is that whoever owns what you are considering stealing, worked for it. They put in the hours of work or provided exchange for that item. When you steal it you are stealing their honest labor as well as what they bought with their wages. Now if this does not mean anything to you, then...
To the Eagle: There was some great news for cops and kids that came out of Olympia this year. The legislature passed and funded the Early Start Act and increased funding for home visiting programs. It’s probably obvious to most people why this is good news for kids, but you may be wondering why it’s also good news for cops. The good news for law enforcement is in the fact that high-quality early learning and home visiting programs have been proven to get kids off to a good start so they are more likely to arrive at kindergarten ready to suc...
To The Eagle: We have permission from the Kiwanis Club of Cathlamet to submit the following letter to the editor. Linda Williams, St. James Family Center To: Nancy McCoy, Chair St. James Family Center Board of Directors Dear Ms. McCoy, In light of recent events in the Cowlitz-Wahkiakum United Way and related financial issues, the Kiwanis Club of Cathlamet voted at a recent meeting to publicly express both our appreciation and our support for St. James Family Center and the essential programs that you provide within Wahkiakum County. One cannot...
To The Eagle: In last week's Eagle, a remark by Hannah Booth-Watts in a letter to the editor, was made concerning the paving of the Elochoman Road by the county. My husband and I think that is in error. For those of us who have lived here a long time, we remember that the Elochoman Road was once a state highway, and they are the ones that actually paved the road. Later on, as the state starting giving the counties some of these smaller highways, the county took over. So, while continuing maintenance and improvements happened while under the...
To the Eagle: This is in response to a letter which appeared in last week’s Eagle. The writer of that letter wasn’t aware of all of the facts, and I would like to explain. The mayor and Cathlamet council members are not the heartless, uncaring people he describes. Background: A resident and his family on Elochoman Valley Road suddenly found themselves without water because of a ruptured pipeline. Their house is on one side of the road; their meter is on the other side, and their water pipe runs under the asphalt street. It’s not just town...
To the Eagle: Back in '92 when we retired, we bought a derelict cedar cabin 4500 feet up the south slope of Mauna Loa on the "Big Island" of Hawaii. The water system source was a rain barrel, but a huge one, nine feet tall, 16 feet in diameter, built with 150 redwood staves. We rehabbed the system with some trepidation, since you could see daylight between the dried out staves, and the property was in the middle of the Ka'u Desert, so rainfall was sparse. But rain did come, and with 1600 square feet of tin roof, every inch of rain put nearly...
To The Eagle: The WSU Extension Nutrition Education Program would like to thank the Wahkiakum School District, Garden Mentor Team, local farms, and businesses, for the opportunity to bring local foods to the students of Julius A. Wendt Elementary School and John C. Thomas Middle School over the past few months. We introduced “My Plate Tasting Days” over the past few months and students have had the opportunity to taste fresh, local products from Stockhouses’ Farm, Island’s End Farm, Zimmermans’ Farm, Skamokawa Farmstead Creamery, and Maria’s P...
To The Eagle: Recently, an effort was made to trap a large number of feral and stray cats in a neighborhood on Columbia Street in Cathlamet. These cats are the result of irresponsible neighbors who would not spay and neuter their pets and then moved out and left several cats behind. These cats have continued to breed. Because of this, my aunt has ended up feeding many homeless and feral cats over the last four years or so. This has cost her many hundreds, if not thousands of dollars in cat food as well as a huge amount of worry and stress over...
It’s time for a reminder about fireworks safety and especially this year with the extra dry weather, it is extremely important that caution is taken when setting them off. Here are some safety tips from tntfireworks.com: Only light fireworks on a hard flat and level surface to ensure stability. Do not set off fireworks directly on grass. Instead, use a wooden or board of non-flammable material. When selecting an area, make sure it’s clear of structures, vehicles, trees, dry grass, brush and other flammable items. When lighting fireworks nev...
by Rick Nelson In my youth, newspaper persons used to tell of the publisher of a major weekly newspaper in Skamania County. They said he had been a press agent for Marilyn Monroe and that he was accustomed to shooting from the hip. So when a man was arrested for murder, the publisher printed a story about the arrest with a headline saying something like this, "Hang the SOB!" Prosecuting attorneys and other officers of the court frown on newspapers printing such material that might prejudice a jury, so they confronted the publisher, who repented...
