  • Wahkiakum youth suffer food insecurity

    Apr 4, 2019

To The Eagle: Food insecurity for youth is a real problem in our state. One in six Washington kids live in a household that faces challenges in putting enough food on the table. One in eight Washingtonians relies on SNAP (food stamps), the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. Half of all people on SNAP are kids. If you think things are better in Wahkiakum County, think again. Just check with the school to see how many of the 300 students served every day qualify for free or reduced lunches. The connection between adequate nutrition and...

  • Let's hold off on no collusion conclusion

    Apr 4, 2019

To The Eagle: We would all do well to hold off on the “no collusion conclusion” until the bipartisan Congressional House Intelligence Committee has examined the findings presented to them by Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller. That committee’s chair, (D) Adam Schiff, responding to insults from President Trump to his person and to the committee’s efforts, has stated “I say this to the President and his defenders in Congress. You may think it’s okay how Trump and his associates have interacted with Russians during the campaign. I do not. I thin...

  • Chicken Littles can sleep easy

    Mar 28, 2019

To The Eagle: Oh happy day; Robert Mueller has washed all of the collusion away. After two years and over 25 million spent, the DOJ investigation has concluded that not the president, not anyone in his campaign colluded with Russia. Which those of us, who supported @realDonaldTrump, knew all along. This ridiculous and criminal hoax was spread ad nauseum by Democrats, the media- including this and other local newspapers, TV, "entertainment" shows, and repeated by the benighted and hoodwinked consumers of their products. I'm not going to hold my...

  • Congratulations to President Trump

    Mar 28, 2019

To The Eagle: I have completed my research into JB Bouchard's suggestion in last week’s letter to the editor as to what a wonderful world this would be if we lived as suggested by the song Imagine by John Lennon. No religion, no nationality, nothing to kill or die for and more blah blah blah. Well as with most people that think they are smarter then the rest of us they just can't help themselves unless they tell us how to think and live. Last point, I bet Lennon wasn't dreaming when he wrote the song unless it was about the money he would m...

  • America needs ethically grounded capitalism

    Mar 28, 2019

To The Eagle: Karen Lane’s histrionic “anti socialism” themed letter in the March 21st edition milked every panicky right wing conservative trope in existence since the 1940's as well as a few bogus new ones such as undocumented illegals qualifying for Social Security. Medicare, Social Security, any federally funded efforts such as Rural Electrification and school nutrition programs, farm price supports, bank deposit insurance, labor union organizing, to name but a few, have at their inception been decried as deadly forms of creeping socia...

  • Feels like dictatorship

    Mar 28, 2019

To The Eagle: I have an angering concern regarding how our property tax is appraised. For simplicity, in my opinion, all the appraiser needs to inspect are the sizes of the buildings and property; no matter the view/frontage or the quality of construction and condition. As to the value of what we do to our buildings and property inside/outside, what business is that to the legislators? Did our legislators pay for and plant the garden/flowers/shrubs we put in? Plant/prune the orchards/trees? Lay out the granite, marble countertops? Laminate or...

  • Airplanes are too complex

    Mar 28, 2019

To The Eagle: On Sunday, March 10, Ethiopian Airlines 302 crashed shortly after takeoff from Addis Ababa, killing all 157 people aboard. Since this was a similar event to Lion Air’s October crash (shortly after takeoff from Jakarta) and in the same relatively new model aircraft (Boeing 737 Max 8), our mainstream media immediately launched into what they are best at: Breathless speculation about defects and danger, and endless finger-pointing at the obvious evil-doers, in this case Boeing, FAA, pilots, and, of course, Donald Trump. In both a...

  • Appraiser gives heads up to community

    Mar 21, 2019

To The Eagle: The Wahkiakum County Assessor’s Office will be out, as always, doing the annual revaluation inspections of properties. The county is divided into four areas. We will begin the inspections in Area 3 over the next few weeks. Area 3 includes all properties on the west side of KM to the western edge of the county. As we begin this inspection season, we wanted to remind property owners of what is entailed in an annual revaluation inspection. The state of Washington requires us, here in Wahkiakum County, to physically inspect p...

  • Church was filled to overflowing

    Mar 21, 2019

To The Eagle: While attending Kay Cochran's funeral at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church on Puget Island on Sunday, I was giving thanks for the architect and builders who put the building on a sure foundation and built it sturdy and well to last all these years. The entire sanctuary and overflow room were filled to capacity with people squished together and some left standing around the edges, which is a wonderful testimony to the life of the woman who left an indelible imprint on so many hearts. What a great community! Victoria Block...

  • Humans have been turning dreams into practical realities

    Mar 21, 2019

To The Eagle: Sounds like Mike Swift (letter March 7 edition) swallowed a couple of irony pills before he wrote his letter for last week's edition. I suppose even such a miserable outlook deserves a hearing. I draw the line, however, at his clueless critique of John (not Vladimir) Lennon’s gentle masterpiece, “Imagine.” If you’ve never heard this ethereal classic or pondered its lyrics, the internet is there to oblige you. Lennon’s song “Imagine” is much more than a “silly anthem” to those of my generation who treasure it. It can be read as a...

  • Nothing is ever free

    Mar 21, 2019

To The Eagle: I have been watching the socialist meltdown in Venezuela and can’t help but think if the people had the right to “bear arms” they would not be under the tyranny and dictatorship of a corrupt government. There is a growing population in this country that support socialism, especially among our young adults, but when asked to define what socialism is they draw a blank and cannot tell you what it is. Socialism is a system of society or group living in which there is no private property. There is no ownership of personal property, lan...

  • Each county should have one vote

    Mar 21, 2019

To The Eagle: Living in the state of Washington and seeing how left-leaning it is, is like when I was a kid in school playing teeter-totter with the fat kid on the playground. His extra ballast kept me up in the air wondering if I would ever touch the ground again. Fast forward to the present after the landslide vote on I1639. The passage by the deep thinkers in King County of this unconstitutional measure that limits the rights of young people to a semi-automatic weapon, but still allows them to acquire a driver’s license, vote in all election...

  • Listening and understanding needed

    Rick Nelson|Mar 14, 2019

Commentary from me? No need for me to write something about national affairs; the letter writers have that covered. State issues: Our county's Republican and Democrat political parties are sponsoring a listening event this Friday, 6:30 p.m. at the Skamokawa Grange. The goal is to collect comment and input from the public about issues important in our area, issues which seem to be ignored by residents and politicians in the urban parts of our state which wield political power. I agree that denizens of the metropoleis have a hard time understandi...

  • Looking forward to car show

    Mar 14, 2019

To The Eagle: Cheers! to the Fair. I was so glad to see an announcement of the up coming car show on June 1 mentioned in The Fair happenings. I had begun to think it was one of the best kept secrets in Wahkiakum Co. I'm glad to see it is going to carry on. I'm sure it will be different than before. That is OK. People attending gave a lot of business to our area. That would have been missed. Now let’s dig in and help The Fair Board out when and where we can. Carol McClain Skamokawa...

  • Consider the consequences of feelings

    Mar 14, 2019

To The Eagle: Ref: Recent letters by Mike Swift, Howard Brawn and JB Bouchard. I can’t tell you how much I enjoy the back and forth by members of this community; it truly is a pleasure to read the weekly excerpts from the combatants. I do have to say that I’m more in line with Howard than JB, and Mike hits the nail dead center (“There is no wisdom on the left.”) I have always felt that the primary force behind liberals has been feelings, regardless of actions or consequences as a result of those actions driven by feelings. Let’s take a look at...

  • Divided, we fail

    Mar 14, 2019

To The Eagle: Divide and conquer is a saying meant for the battlefield, not in a country as great as ours, for political gain. But that seems to be in vogue now. Name-calling from the right seems more intense; now our president has made it a mainstay of his narrative. Don’t yell yet, as it comes from the left also, but definitely not with the same force as from the 35 percent or so who hang on his every word, still chanting "lock her up." Meanwhile, a large percent of Trump’s staff and associates are getting locked up, or are about to be. I f...

  • Now is the time to speak up

    Mar 14, 2019

To The Eagle: Since I moved here 12.5 years ago (a newbie), I have heard that the government doesn’t listen to Wahkiakum County. We now have a chance for the state government beyond our legislators to hear us. The Democrats and Republicans (yes, working together for positive change for our county) are sponsoring a Listening Tour March 15 at the Skamokawa Grange starting at 6:15 with a dessert potluck. The Listening Team will be led by Don Schwerin, Chair of State Democratic Party Rural and Ag Caucus plus Small Business Caucus. The Moderator w...

  • Engineering, monitoring needed to develop lot

    Mar 14, 2019

To The Eagle: As accurately reported last week by The Eagle, the Town of Cathlamet recently held a special council meeting regarding the infamous Butler Street property they purchased in 2018. At that meeting, Fred Johnson described the status of the existing restrictive covenant (RC) that applies to the property’s toxic issues in terms that sounded like there may be no toxic problems at all. In fact, he questioned whether the RC even applies to Butler Street property. A couple of people have quickly asked me about the apparent disconnect b...

  • Change ahead for Eagle delivery

    Mar 7, 2019

By Publisher Rick Nelson There are Eagle readers who buy their copy as soon as they can on Wednesdays. After this week, they will no longer be able to do so. Our printing schedule is changing. Since at least 1970, The Daily News in Longview has printed The Eagle for us. Before then, we had a press with the year 1895 cast into the frame. We used a Linotype (see it at the Wahkiakum County Historical Museum) and hand set type to form the pages. The type and photo engravings were all metal. Some illustrations were cast in lead and mounted on wood...

  • Rural Issues Listening Tour stopping here

    Mar 7, 2019

To The Eagle: On March 15, 6-8 p.m. everyone is invited to be at the Skamokawa Grange to help identify common concerns we have in our county that we want the state level government to work on. This is a bipartisan effort, sponsored by both the Republican and Democrat county party chairs. The Listening Tour team is led by Don Schwerin, Chair of the state Democrat Party Rural and Ag Caucus. In short, many of our concerns are different from Eastern Washington rural county concerns and these folks want to hear our concerns so we can all work on the...

  • Wainwright: I may not be best for council

    Mar 7, 2019

To The Eagle: In response to George Wehrfritz’s comments in last week’s Eagle, I need to explain some apparent misconceptions. First of all, the recall petition against Jacobson, Smith, Burnham and Cameron is supported by the group called Concerned Citizens of Cathlamet (CCC), not solely myself. I helped set up CCC and act as a spokesperson for the anonymous group. The group is aproximately 15 people who are mostly long term area residents, business owners and in some instances, town elders. We were initially concerned about what was and was...

  • There is no wisdom on the left

    Mar 7, 2019
    1

To The Eagle: Imagine the leftist future. The abolition of the Electoral College, say. The final ascendence of the loving Left. The will realized of the" little people," led, of course, by the tender ministrations and commandments of our ruling class. Yes, like the foolish anthem of that "visionary" Beatle, John Lenin (oops, Lennon), we, all of us, can have that bright future. The leftist prescriptions of some of our elderly citizens are truly bracing. How could so many adults, folks in their 50's, 60's, 70's, and beyond be enthralled to their...

  • Cardiac care at St. Johns Hospital is superb

    Mar 7, 2019

To The Eagle: On November 23, 2018, the day after Thanksgiving, I suffered a STEMI heart attack, also known as a “widow maker,” and was a thirty minute drive by ambulance to St. John’s hospital. I recognized the early symptoms and called 911. En route to the hospital I was transferred to an AMR ambulance at Stella where a 12 lead EKG showed the STEMI. The AMR paramedic activated the cardiac team at St. John’s ED. Upon arrival I was suffering serious chest pain and a pulse of 43. Fortunately for me Dr. Suero was in the Cath Lab with another pati...

  • Stories about Carlton asked for archives

    Feb 28, 2019

To The Eagle: Carlton Appelo died on February 12th at 96 years of age. He was a visionary in business, and in support of his community and region. He made regular trips to Washington DC to meet with elected officials to let them know about current projects he supported and what was needed from them in support of those projects. He was a visionary in business, as well as for non-profits. His family has impacted the area in ways we today cannot even truly imagine. Carlton and I worked together to develop and found the Appelo Archives Center...

  • First do no harm

    Feb 28, 2019

To The Eagle: Thanks to J.B. Bouchard for attempting to salvage my political incorrectness (letter in last week’s Eagle), but the actual muddled insinuation was committed by Virginia’s Governor Ralph Northam on national media as he opined that a baby surviving an abortion attempt would then be comforted and resuscitated while mother and doctor discuss disposition of the baby (probably by the Kermit Gosnell method rather than a Jonathan Swift fricassee). Some states are moving to get permissive legislation on the books in anticipation of the...
