To The Eagle: The painting of the Redmen Hall/1894 Central School is now complete and restored to its original color scheme. The Friends of Skamokawa Board of Directors would like to acknowledge community members who donated coins and cash in our collection boxes, groups and private citizens who donated funds to paint for this historical gem. Thank you to Ken Gomes Construction paint crew for outstanding paint work, Steve Puddicombe for building inspection, J&K Construction for building repairs, and Lucien Swerdloff of Clatsop Community...
To The Eagle: It was fun watching the debates last month in a group. We were able to talk about the candidates during the breaks. Some things we all liked some we all didn't. Not much was said directly by the candidates about regaining local control of local resources which is one of our main concerns. So, let's do it again but in smaller groups and possibly in more locations. Consider hosting a debate-watch house-party for your neighbors and friends! The next presidential primary Democratic Party debates are coming Tuesday and Wednesday, July...
To The Eagle: The eagles soared high over Cathlamet and Wahkiakum County during the Bald Eagle Day's festival! More than 50 members of the Portland Yacht Club (PYC) were here aboard 18 boats, while others stayed at the hotel, camped or spent the day in Cathlamet. It was fun to participate in as well as watch the parade and the fireworks show is always spectacular. This is a wonderful community and PYC members love cruising to Cathlamet. The Chamber of Commerce put on a great event for visitors and locals alike. The parade was fun and well...
To The Eagle: Show #3 in the Silver Buckle Gaming Series, at the Wahkiakum County fairgrounds was canceled. The show was to have taken place on July 13. The arena was accidently flooded, so the show had to be canceled. The footing was so bad that we didn't want to take the chance on any horses or riders getting injured. August 3 has been set as the make up date for show #3. The gates will again open at 8 a.m. for registration and warm up. The show will start at 10 a.m. We will again start with the Texas Barrels jackpot. Show #4 in the series...
To The Eagle: There were enough public works defugalties chronicled in last week’s Eagle to prompt a nostalgic ramble down memory lane. Kudos to Ursula Petralia for her excellent bucket list of economic development desires. I don’t know whether to feel insulted or complimented that she omitted my old pet project, CIA-PIGS (Cathlamet International Airport – Puget Island Grass Strip). It seems to have fallen by the wayside, but will surely be needed to keep supplies flowing into Ursula’s magnificent strip mall development. Dave Kirby hit the nai...
To The Eagle: I ordered the new book, Deep River, from Amazon so it would arrive July 1st. I’ve spent hours reading it because it’s not just another paperback length. Believe me, it’s a book similar to a mini-series at 700 pages. Full of Finnish history and set in our Deep River, Knappton, and Astoria areas, it’s fun to read because it’s so detailed. The picture is here on the immigrant life, Finland’s long history with Russia, the early unions and why there were “red” Finns. Logging details are done well, too. The book is a really good histori...
To The Eagle: The Challenge of Champions Pro Bull Riding Tour is coming to the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds on Friday, July 19. Tickets are still available at Bob’s Sporting Goods in Longview, The Pizza Mill in Cathlamet, The Duck Inn in Skamokawa, Johnson's One Stop in Naselle and from Fair Foundation members. Pre-event price is $15 with five years and under free; price at the gate is $20. The gates open at 4:30 p.m., with the bull riding starting at 7:30 p.m.; food will be served on site. The Wahkiakum Fair Foundation would like to thank o...
To The Eagle: The mayor and town council of Cathlamet have determined we have plenty of street parking in downtown. They have cordoned off the only public parking lot available, securing it for potential future use as a park. I don’t know the plan or cost of development - there seems to be little interest in asking for input from the business community that will be the most impacted. I attempted to drop by the First Interstate Bank on July 1st- there was no place to park. Please take a look at Main Street- It is now July, not mid-January- t...
To The Eagle: By all means, let’s have a strip mall along SR 4! We could start with the proposed Dollar General store, and add a Walmart, a casino, a nightclub with topless dancers and a peep show, a bowling alley, an adult book store, liquor stores, pawn shops, and a few used car lots. To further enhance the suburban ambiance of the Monroe Acres and Glengate “estates,” we could invite the construction of a shooting range and a NASCAR track along Elochoman road. How about hosting a privately-operated prison on East Valley road and a Trump...
To The Eagle: I was extremely disappointed in Richard Erickson's recent letter to the editor. Instead of chatting with the leaders of Clatskanie and Rainier about Dollar General he should have been using Google to find out about real communities who have lost their businesses to Dollar General. And if he had used Google, he would've found out that Cathlamet is nowhere near the populations of both of these towns in Oregon and therefore cannot be compared. One town even has a Safeway store. These larger communities can somewhat absorb a business...
To The Eagle: The first of the Democratic Party presidential primary debates is next week, with 10 candidates on Wednesday 6/26 and 10 more on Thursday 6/27, starting at 6:00 p.m., each night. They are supposed to be done by 8:00 p.m. I thought about just sitting at home and watching quietly but I had a much more fun idea: what if we could meet at Maria's, eat dinner, and then watch with folks who all want to talk about what we see? I asked Maria and she said "OK with us." So, if you are interested, let's meet at Maria's around 5:30, get starte...
To The Eagle: Let’s not let facts get in the way: I’ve been reading some comments on Facebook and in the local newspaper about how terrible a Dollar General Store opening in our county would be. It appears that there are major concerns that if this new retail store comes into our town, it will harm the existing businesses. Many people have said it's like Wal-Mart, and it will do the same thing to small towns. Many people leave our community to go to Wal-Mart. One article in the local paper said to Google Dollar General and find out, so I did...
To The Eagle: I would like to point out why Dollar General should not be allowed to come into our community. Namely Factor #3 of the SEPA checklist that was overlooked by the Bureau of Planning, which is stimulate public health and welfare. #1 Dollar General threatens the viability of the existing community and threatens locally owned business, property values, and the ability of Cathlamet to attract new residents and small businesses. #2 They have a poor concern for workers by paying far below prevailing wages and taxpayers are forced to...
To The Eagle: I have been amazed at the vitriol being directed at Dollar General. I don’t see the same hate toward oil companies that control our local gas stations. Yet they are two of the world’s wealthiest, greediest, and most environmentally dangerous companies. Minute marts generally pay only minimum wage. Should we run them out of the county, pass laws banning them, and put their workers on unemployment? Newcomers to this area may not realize that Cathlamet once had a clothing store, a variety store and another grocery. I have a few que...
To The Eagle: Commissioner Cothren should probably think twice in the future before he claims to represent the thinking of the people who reside in our fine community. Contrary to his assertion, my family did not decide to move back here because we “don't like all these restrictions.” Our decision had a lot more to do with the fact that this area was still free of the strip malls with their low wages, outside owners that suck the wealth out of the area, and tons of cheap plastic trash which ends up all over the place. Dollar stores are a pri...
To The Eagle: Amateur Radio Field Day is a nationwide event where several thousand radio clubs simulate a large-scale emergency and attempt to contact as many other clubs as possible in North America. Our local club - N7WAH - is practicing as if there is no public power: batteries and solar recharging only. The contest runs from 11:00 a.m. on Saturday June 22 to 11:00 a.m. on Sunday June 23. We will be operating 24 hours straight. Last year we placed fourth in the nation in our category. New this year is our satellite communications station....
To The Eagle: Are you ready? Time to clean out those attics and garages. Puget Island people: You need to be signed up by 10 a.m. June 26. Please call me to sign up, (360) 430-0951. The fee is still $10. I’m looking forward to having an awesome sale and know we’ll have a great turnout. Sandie York PIGYS Coordinator...
Following are the remarks delivered at the Memorial Day remembrance ceremony sponsored by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5297 at Greenwood Cemetery on Monday. By Bill Tawater Commander, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5297 In quiet services across our country today, we come together as a nation to remember those lost in the clash of battle; the thunder of bombs, the roar of tanks, the rumbling of airplanes flying overhead and the scream of artillery shells. This Memorial Day, we come together to appreciate the freedom that we enjoy today as we hon...
To The Eagle: Over half of the Nevada legislature are women, and they are busy lighting candles instead of cursing the darkness. Their senate just passed the Trust Nevada Women Act which codifies women’s reproductive rights and decriminalizes all abortion related matters. They are also on the cusp of joining the National Popular Vote Interstate Compact. The object of the compact is to bypass the Electoral College by mandating that their six electors commit their votes to whichever presidential candidate has nationally won the most popular v...
To The Eagle: Dollar General stores are a proven magnet for shoplifting and crime. There is a website for shoplifters that lists Dollar General as an easy target. They will be calling our local sheriff and deputies for help which will be a drain on their department as well as taking time away from a real local need. Is this how you want your hard earned taxes spent, taking care of a corporate giant or taking care of our community? Kristin Lee Puget Island...
To The Eagle: When I first heard about Kyleen Austin’s Ketchikan to Puget Island kayak adventure two thoughts came to mind. First, what an amazing adventure and second, how do you get ready to paddle solo for 1,000 miles? Seriously, the preparation that goes into being ready mentally, physically and spiritually in addition to the logistics of itinerary planning and provisioning are mind boggling. I would be a frantic mess, but Kyleen isn’t. She’s ready to go and excited to share this great adventure with all of us. To find out more about her c...
Lots going on around the county, and in the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Office as well these days. First and foremost, I am pleased to say that our theft and burglary cases have plummeted the last couple months. Two burglaries and three thefts were reported in the entire county. Zero thefts or burglaries were reported in the Skamokawa area or areas where we have held neighborhood watch meetings or coffee-with-a-cop meetings. In my experience, wherever there are police/community meetings to talk...
To The Eagle: Due to a misinterpretation on the part of Wahkiakum Building and Planning, it was incorrectly stated that the proposed Dollar General needed a Shoreline Substantial Development Permit Notice. Shoreline Permit review requirements are not applicable to the Dollar General Development due to the property being located outside of the regulated shoreline development area. A State Environmental Policy Act (SEPA) review had been conducted in accordance with WAC 197-11. Dollar General falls within the recommended use category of the...
To The Eagle: Con-job definition: Scams in which the victim is induced to hand over money (or votes) as a token of confidence. How many people have been conned over the years, by Trump, or the ‘use’ of his name? Just watched a show, listing some of his failed ventures and bankruptcies, with thousands of people ending up losing their investments. The list is too long to name them all, and doesn’t take into account all the people he has ‘stiffed’ of due wages and earnings. I am of the notion that we, the American people, were part of his bigge...
To The Eagle: Big thanks to Kristin Lee (Opinion, May 16, 2019) for skillfully outlining details related to the proposed Dollar General store on Hwy 4, including the potential impact on our charming town. She pointed out that it is not a done deal. We have a say in whether or not this happens. If you are interested in learning more about the impact of Dollar General stores on rural towns across America, I encourage you to insert the words "Dollar General rural communities" into your favorite search engine (Google, Bing, Yahoo, AOL, etc.) where...
