  • Gift was from club based in Puget Sound

    Aug 15, 2019

To The Eagle: Last week’s Eagle had a nifty photo of my wife Judy presenting a $500 gift of animal rescue equipment and monetary canine program support to Sheriff Howie on behalf of the Irish Wolfhound Club of Puget Island, with me, Under Sheriff Howell, drug dog Dakota and wolfhound Valley Girl framing the photo. All well and good, except there is no Irish Wolfhound Club of Puget Island, so the photo may have left the impression that Judy and I had more to do with the donation than we actually did. The gift was actually from the Irish W...

  • National Night Out event well attended

    Aug 15, 2019

To The Eagle: Last Tuesday, August 6, the Puget Island Fire Department hosted its 3rd annual "National Night Out" event at the fire hall. We had a large number of friends and neighbors stop in to say hello and enjoy hot dogs and root beer floats, making it a tremendously successful event. It was a fun evening for all involved and a pleasure meeting and visiting with people from our community. We would like to thank two of our local businesses, River Mile 38 for the root beer donation and the Cathlamet Market for donating the ice cream, along...

  • County employees are appreciated

    Aug 15, 2019

To The Eagle: In April we got a substantial job that required adding 6000 s.f. to our existing facility. We got the building permit in less than 48 hours. Construction was finished and we moved in in 60 days. This morning I went in to the county health department to ask some questions about a septic system we had installed maybe 20 years ago. I walked away with my answer and a look at the original permit in about two minutes. This is the greatest county to live in the entire State of Washington. Thank you, Wahkiakum County employees! Robert L....

  • Norse Hall recommended

    Aug 15, 2019

To The Eagle: We want to recognize and publicly acknowledge the good folks at Norse Hall and everyone involved for the fantastic support that made our May wedding an event to remember. The board and volunteers at the Sons of Norway pulled out all the stops to make our event a successful one. We are so grateful and we heartily recommend Norse Hall for any and all events in the county, with or without the Viking ship! Words can never express how thankful we are to the good folks at the Sons of Norway and all concerned. David and Dayle Olson...

  • Support legislation that will make a difference

    Aug 8, 2019

To The Eagle: As many of you know I have written a few other pieces to our newspaper about the situation of guns in America. I have proposed a tax on ammunition to help fund research on just exactly what can be done to stop this carnage and to help the very innocent victims of these people of hate. This will not be enough and we must start this process by outlawing the weapons that are most often used. These semi-automatic weapons are not used for hunting, they are not appropriate for target shooting; they are designed to kill and maim humans....

  • Time to enter the fair

    Aug 8, 2019

To The Eagle: Wow! It’s fair time already. Time to dust off your crafts, fluff up your quilts, frame up your photos, tidy up your begonias, gather up your best canning, and pick your produce. Pick up a fair book at The Eagle, the community center or the extension office for entry instructions. Bring your non-perishable items on Mon., August 11 and the perishables on Tues., the 12th. See you at the fair! Mariane Brightbill Puget Island...

  • Disc needed for fair arena maintenance

    Aug 8, 2019

To The Eagle: We had a good turn out for the show. The footing was less than ideal. After the flood and the bull riding event, a lot of big rocks came to the surface. Because the ground did not have sufficient time to dry before the bull riding event, we were left with some holes. Our arena man is Mike Doan. He is from Long Beach and volunteers his time to come and work on our arena. He has done a fantastic job in improving the footing. The arena groomer has been a great asset in improving and maintaining the footing in the arena. We have also...

  • Cable should keep consumers as priority

    Aug 1, 2019

To The Eagle: It hasn’t gotten front page attention, but a national dispute over cable TV pricing has implications right here in SW WA. Nexstar, the largest television broadcasting company in America, is currently in a dispute over pricing for content they provide to stations around the country. It’s a dispute because Nexstar continues to try to raise prices. Many carriers have balked and Nexstar is threatening to “blackout” it’s content of local stations around the country. It is a shame to think that if Nexstar doesn’t get its way, we wil...

  • We have choices to the last minute

    Aug 1, 2019

To The Eagle: Some years ago, I planted aspen trees in my yard in honor of my history with Colorado. They have grown to be high and beautiful with soft wood and pretty leaves. I sit on my deck in the morning with my coffee and I watch the life in one tree full of young birds. This year two young woodpeckers have been regularly pecking away at one of those trees, looking for food and talking to me. Yes, they talk away. I actually think the pair of them are talking to each other, but I insist to myself they, along with the other small birds, are...

  • Suggestions offered on controversy

    Aug 1, 2019

To The Eagle: I have several observations about the current pronoun controversy. First, a number of years ago, my father used to make a joke about the subject, suggesting that I “go out to the person box to see whether the person-person left us any person.” And that comment brings to mind a quandary: If the word “man” is to be avoided, then what about “woMAN”? Shouldn’t that be “woPERSON?” Oh, but “son” denotes gender, so maybe we need to change it to “woPER-DAUGHTER?” And finally, here’s a more serious suggestion: Inasmuch as the capital let...

  • Improve relationships with neighbors

    Aug 1, 2019

To The Eagle: A community-wide National Night Out will be held at the Puget Island Fire Hall, Tuesday, August 6, 5:30-7:30 p.m. Everyone is invited to come join us and enjoy root beer floats and hot dogs. National Night Out enhances the relationship between neighbors and Law Enforcements while bringing back a true sense of community. Visit with our local law enforcement and local volunteer fire fighters. See you there! Sherrill Bollen Puget Island...

  • Bald Eagle Days was one of the best

    Jul 25, 2019

To The Eagle: On behalf of the Wahkiakum County Chamber of Commerce, I want to sincerely express our humbled appreciation to everyone involved in making this Bald Eagle Days weekend such an amazing experience! The Chamber team is so grateful for the opportunity to organize the parade and festival, but we could not have done this without the hard work of our community volunteers, sponsor donations, vendors, and, most importantly, everyone who attended the events throughout the weekend. Thank you to all the parade participants who continue to...

  • Redmen Hall painting complete

    Jul 25, 2019

To The Eagle: The painting of the Redmen Hall/1894 Central School is now complete and restored to its original color scheme. The Friends of Skamokawa Board of Directors would like to acknowledge community members who donated coins and cash in our collection boxes, groups and private citizens who donated funds to paint for this historical gem. Thank you to Ken Gomes Construction paint crew for outstanding paint work, Steve Puddicombe for building inspection, J&K Construction for building repairs, and Lucien Swerdloff of Clatsop Community...

  • Democrats urged to watch the debates

    Jul 25, 2019

To The Eagle: It was fun watching the debates last month in a group. We were able to talk about the candidates during the breaks. Some things we all liked some we all didn't. Not much was said directly by the candidates about regaining local control of local resources which is one of our main concerns. So, let's do it again but in smaller groups and possibly in more locations. Consider hosting a debate-watch house-party for your neighbors and friends! The next presidential primary Democratic Party debates are coming Tuesday and Wednesday, July...

  • Eagles and angels soared during Bald Eagle Day

    Jul 25, 2019

To The Eagle: The eagles soared high over Cathlamet and Wahkiakum County during the Bald Eagle Day's festival! More than 50 members of the Portland Yacht Club (PYC) were here aboard 18 boats, while others stayed at the hotel, camped or spent the day in Cathlamet. It was fun to participate in as well as watch the parade and the fireworks show is always spectacular. This is a wonderful community and PYC members love cruising to Cathlamet. The Chamber of Commerce put on a great event for visitors and locals alike. The parade was fun and well...

  • Rescheduled horse show will be August 3

    Jul 25, 2019

To The Eagle: Show #3 in the Silver Buckle Gaming Series, at the Wahkiakum County fairgrounds was canceled. The show was to have taken place on July 13. The arena was accidently flooded, so the show had to be canceled. The footing was so bad that we didn't want to take the chance on any horses or riders getting injured. August 3 has been set as the make up date for show #3. The gates will again open at 8 a.m. for registration and warm up. The show will start at 10 a.m. We will again start with the Texas Barrels jackpot. Show #4 in the series...

  • Let's ramble down memory lane

    Jul 18, 2019

To The Eagle: There were enough public works defugalties chronicled in last week’s Eagle to prompt a nostalgic ramble down memory lane. Kudos to Ursula Petralia for her excellent bucket list of economic development desires. I don’t know whether to feel insulted or complimented that she omitted my old pet project, CIA-PIGS (Cathlamet International Airport – Puget Island Grass Strip). It seems to have fallen by the wayside, but will surely be needed to keep supplies flowing into Ursula’s magnificent strip mall development. Dave Kirby hit the nai...

  • Book about Westend Finns a delight

    Jul 11, 2019

To The Eagle: I ordered the new book, Deep River, from Amazon so it would arrive July 1st. I’ve spent hours reading it because it’s not just another paperback length. Believe me, it’s a book similar to a mini-series at 700 pages. Full of Finnish history and set in our Deep River, Knappton, and Astoria areas, it’s fun to read because it’s so detailed. The picture is here on the immigrant life, Finland’s long history with Russia, the early unions and why there were “red” Finns. Logging details are done well, too. The book is a really good histori...

  • The bulls are coming!

    Jul 11, 2019

To The Eagle: The Challenge of Champions Pro Bull Riding Tour is coming to the Wahkiakum County Fairgrounds on Friday, July 19. Tickets are still available at Bob’s Sporting Goods in Longview, The Pizza Mill in Cathlamet, The Duck Inn in Skamokawa, Johnson's One Stop in Naselle and from Fair Foundation members. Pre-event price is $15 with five years and under free; price at the gate is $20. The gates open at 4:30 p.m., with the bull riding starting at 7:30 p.m.; food will be served on site. The Wahkiakum Fair Foundation would like to thank o...

  • Develop a park near the marina

    Jul 11, 2019

To The Eagle: The mayor and town council of Cathlamet have determined we have plenty of street parking in downtown. They have cordoned off the only public parking lot available, securing it for potential future use as a park. I don’t know the plan or cost of development - there seems to be little interest in asking for input from the business community that will be the most impacted. I attempted to drop by the First Interstate Bank on July 1st- there was no place to park. Please take a look at Main Street- It is now July, not mid-January- t...

  • Let's have a strip mall on SR 4

    Jul 11, 2019

To The Eagle: By all means, let’s have a strip mall along SR 4! We could start with the proposed Dollar General store, and add a Walmart, a casino, a nightclub with topless dancers and a peep show, a bowling alley, an adult book store, liquor stores, pawn shops, and a few used car lots. To further enhance the suburban ambiance of the Monroe Acres and Glengate “estates,” we could invite the construction of a shooting range and a NASCAR track along Elochoman road. How about hosting a privately-operated prison on East Valley road and a Trump...

  • Reports: Dollar General will impact our town

    Jun 27, 2019

To The Eagle: I was extremely disappointed in Richard Erickson's recent letter to the editor. Instead of chatting with the leaders of Clatskanie and Rainier about Dollar General he should have been using Google to find out about real communities who have lost their businesses to Dollar General. And if he had used Google, he would've found out that Cathlamet is nowhere near the populations of both of these towns in Oregon and therefore cannot be compared. One town even has a Safeway store. These larger communities can somewhat absorb a business...

  • Watch the presidential debates while dining

    Jun 20, 2019

To The Eagle: The first of the Democratic Party presidential primary debates is next week, with 10 candidates on Wednesday 6/26 and 10 more on Thursday 6/27, starting at 6:00 p.m., each night. They are supposed to be done by 8:00 p.m. I thought about just sitting at home and watching quietly but I had a much more fun idea: what if we could meet at Maria's, eat dinner, and then watch with folks who all want to talk about what we see? I asked Maria and she said "OK with us." So, if you are interested, let's meet at Maria's around 5:30, get starte...

  • Concerned about store? Go, check it out

    Jun 13, 2019

To The Eagle: Let’s not let facts get in the way: I’ve been reading some comments on Facebook and in the local newspaper about how terrible a Dollar General Store opening in our county would be. It appears that there are major concerns that if this new retail store comes into our town, it will harm the existing businesses. Many people have said it's like Wal-Mart, and it will do the same thing to small towns. Many people leave our community to go to Wal-Mart. One article in the local paper said to Google Dollar General and find out, so I did...

  • Citizen gives reasons to deny business

    Jun 13, 2019
    1

To The Eagle: I would like to point out why Dollar General should not be allowed to come into our community. Namely Factor #3 of the SEPA checklist that was overlooked by the Bureau of Planning, which is stimulate public health and welfare. #1 Dollar General threatens the viability of the existing community and threatens locally owned business, property values, and the ability of Cathlamet to attract new residents and small businesses. #2 They have a poor concern for workers by paying far below prevailing wages and taxpayers are forced to...
