Ruby was one of four children born to Swedish immigrants that settled in Yankton. At the age of three, Ruby's father died in a logging accident. His father was an army officer in command of a fort near Chicago. They lived in Chicago, then New York City until he was five, when his father was put in charge of the army base in Bagio, the Philippines.
