"The O," a historic saloon in Skamokawa, formerly known as the Oasis and more recently the Roadkill Saloon, is now open on a limited basis, thanks to new proprietor Rich Rowley. With a liquor license, cider, beer, and wine on tap, Rowley plans to open the venue once a month for a live music event. The Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors heard reports from principals, got an update on Chromebooks, and approved the purchase of a vehicle and skidder at their June meeting on Tuesday. Debby Hansen, who has been dubbed the cybrarian, gave a report on Chromebooks use at the school district in the past year, explaining how they were keeping track of them and the expectations for their use. The Cathlamet town council met Tuesday and discussed speed limits and sewer rates again. The discussion about sewer rates began with connection fees for new developments. The city has not changed utility connection fees since 2013. The council discussed various methods of discount including the number of homes built or lower connection fees for less expensive housing but no decision was made. Last year I issued a challenge for the Wahkiakum County Fair. I was pretty sure that I, an infrequent baker, could make the best pie in the county, and I happily told you so. The cause of two unrelated and recent fires in Wahkiakum County remain undetermined. According to Austin Burkhalter, assistant chief for the Grays River Fire Department, because a fire at a home on Altoona/Pillar Rock Road on May 28 did not appear suspicious, there was no request for a fire investigator.
