The first involves recent malfunctions that periodically took down the ability to call long distance. They are working to remove the old equipment that was causing problems for long distance callers and installing new equipment that will provide better service. That work is currently being done at night when calls are less frequent. This work is pending. However, the old equipment appears to have settled down for now, Johnson...

  • Parties planning path for community center managerial position

    Rick Nelson|Aug 26, 2021

The effort to reconstitute the Community Center in Cathlamet took a step forward Tuesday at a meeting of center supporters and town and county officials. The center is operated on a cooperative agreement of the county and town. The county has been responsible for the manager's position, and because of funding constraints, has tied that position to programs funded by outside agencies. The most recent manager left the position last spring, and since then, center use has largely been limited to previously existing programs led by volunteers. Feari...

  • Buoy 10 to close to Chinook retention later this week

    Aug 26, 2021

The Buoy 10 fishery on the lower Columbia River will close to Chinook salmon retention beginning Friday, fishery managers from Washington and Oregon announced today. Strong fishing effort at Buoy 10, combined with sustained high catch rates, meant the fishery reached its allowable impacts on Chinook earlier than expected, according to Ryan Lothrop, Columbia River fishery manager with the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW). Previously scheduled to remain open until Sept. 6, the section of river from Buoy 10 to the Tongue...

The CDC approved the third dose regimen over the weekend. • Commissioners cover spray, covid, finances

    Rick Nelson|Aug 19, 2021

Wahkiakum County officials covered a lot of ground, much of it from public comment, when the board of commissioners met Tuesday. Middle Valley resident Jerry Ledtke reported that recent herbicide spraying had apparently led to the death of six cattle on his land, and he urged the board of commissioners to look into the county spray program. It appeared the application took place around a road culvert for a stream draining into land he had rented to another person who had 140 animals on the land. The person has had the animals autopsied and...

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 19, 2021

Cathlamet and Grays River are the only two fire departments in Wahkiakum County that have transporting licenses, which means they are the only departments with ambulances to transport people to the hospital. They are responsible for providing that service to all the communities on their respective sides of KM. To be clear, they may not be the first to respond, but they are the ones who will be responsible for getting anyone in an emergent situation to the hospital. There was a recent question...

There were 16 boats on display, according to CYC member Dean Carmine, and someone came from as far as Eugene, Oregon this year to show off his vessel, Bennett said. Photos by Diana...
