The Washington State Department of Ecology issued a statewide drought advisory last Wednesday, July 12. The department said the state saw the warmest May on record and an abnormally dry spring and early summer, which resulted in an early snowmelt. The Wahkiakum County Port 2 Board of Commissioners heard reports from managers at their meeting on Tuesday. Vista Park continues to be extremely busy, according to Assistant Port Manager Terina Davis. The ice machine they installed earlier this year is proving to be a good investment. As of July 1 house bill 1125 will be in effect and will increase funding of the ferry by the state from 80 to 85 percent. A group of local women enjoyed a cool down after a water aerobics class at the Cathlamet pool on Tuesday evening. The class is offered from 7:30-8:30 a.m. and again from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. There is also a lap swim from 6:30-7:30 a.m. and 5:30-6:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Because of staffing issues, the vaccine clinic hosted by Wahkiakum Health and Human Services every Monday and Wednesday is on hiatus as of July 5. The public nurse at WHHS recently tendered her resignation, and the department is actively seeking a new registered nurse. The clinic will resume when the position is filled.
