SR 4 is a pain. We all agree on that. I know using SR 4 for jobs and appointments is a pain. Trying to keep to a schedule can be brutal, but the DOT has to work on highways within a certain summer time frame. I guess the issue is understanding we're all in the same boat. Charles “Chuck” Parker, 81, longtime Skamokawa resident, died in Colorado Springs, CO on August 7, 2021. Chuck was born in Cathlamet on February 18, 1940 to Sid and Mary (Powers) Parker. He was active in 4-H while in school in Skamokawa. He graduated from Wahkiakum High School in 1958 and joined the Air Force in 1959. He spent 21 years in the military. The Naselle Community Center officially opened its doors to the public on Saturday, July 24. Carl Wirkkala and his "Whistle Punks" band members played for a very welcoming crowd of listeners. Before the concert began, Travis Boggs, local caterer, and his wife Jennifer Boggs, the Finnish American Folk Festival (FAFF) chairman, served hamburger and hot dog combos. Carol Dean Baker Penttila, 70, died at her Naselle residence on July 16, 202l surrounded by her family. Carol fought a valiant battle with cancer for 15 years. Born May 23,1951in Meridian, Mississippi, she was the daughter of Allen and Willie Mae Baker. She grew up in a military family and came to Washington state when her father was transferred to Fort Lewis. Firewatch: Towers in the National Forests used to be common years ago. College students would stay at a tower for the summer to watch for smoke indicating a fire. They would contact the agency so fire crews could get to the fire ASAP. Can we all be like those firewatchers? That heat we had will hopefully not come again. Yesterday's breeze from the ocean was heaven. That heat burned the new growth on a couple of my rhododendrons.
