Wright said there will be 170 teams from all over the world in Maryland for the SeaPerch Challenge, competing in three...

Photo of the Week: The family of Marjorie Elder Kraxberger gathered with her for a family photo in 2006 at a Covered Bridge Celebration. For Finns, family is probably the most important value. As an illustration of that, Marjorie's photo shows how important she was to her family. Appelo Archives Treasures: At the Archives in Naselle, there are so many things to enjoy. I worked there for many years helping Carlton Appelo establish the center. I went through many of Carlton's collections in those...

A young Wahkiakum Mules softball team may not be getting wins yet, but that doesn't keep the blessings from coming. When they didn't have enough players to field a game against Naselle recently, one Comet player after another took a position for them so the game could go on, giving the Lady Mules a chance to enjoy some play time and practice their skills. Last Friday, the Lady Mules suffered a 19-0 loss to Adna, the league powerhouse, according to Coach Garrett Miller. "We got some experience...
Above: Comet shortstop Jack Strange knocks in a run with this line-drive single and Naselle goes up 4-3 in the sixth inning. The Comets would hold on to beat The Fisherman of Ilwaco, 9-6, on a cold blustery day in Long Beach last Saturday. Right: Naselle's Kolten Lindstrom strikes out Ilwaco's Xavier Smith and gets the win for the Comets. Photo by Robert Hilson....

Photo of the Week: It's hard to get grass cut when it rains and sleets and snows in April. I'm hoping, dear readers, that you won't judge me as irresponsible if my yard appears to be more field than yard. Not only was there snow, as seen in the photo looking north off Covered Bridge Road, but a tree in my front yard also came down last week. It just leaned over in the wind and landed in the yard without touching the house or decks. I'm so grateful for that. I tried for a couple days to find...

Weather: Big hail, wind, rain and cold so far, so I'm hoping weather improves later in the week when you get your Eagle. I often try to get a sense of who subscribes to The Eagle but still I'm not sure. If you think you can just read it on-line, you still will miss a lot. So think about supporting one local business, The Eagle, would you? Naselle Camp: The Governor did not change anything in the supplemental budget, so it appears the camp will close. Boys will be gone by December 31 and...

Photos by Todd Wilson The Wahkiakum Mules baseball team started adding to their win column last week, beating Rainier on the road and Naselle at home. On the road last Thursday, the Mules beat the Timberwolves 17-5. Junior Dominic Curl pitched all five innings, striking out nine and walking four. "It felt really good to go out on the mound and compete," Curl said. "I was really feeling my off speed stuff, so I went with that early. The team helped me by getting runs on the board early. While...

Dances down in Rosburg were at the Grange Hall there -Rosburg Hall. The Grange disbanded and some of...
Commentary by Karen Bertroch The town hall meeting about the planned closure of the Naselle Youth Camp held March 17 gave the group that attended a sense of the latest reality of what’s happening as the deadline for the governor’s signature that would stop the camp’s coming closure gets closer. An excellent article in The Chinook Observer gave the readers plenty of data. The number of employees, the amount of money lost, the loss of economic life for both western Wahkiakum and eastern Pacific counties was laid out in dollars receding from...
Photos by Todd Wilson The Wahkiakum Mules baseball team suffered a couple more losses this week, bringing their overall record to 0-6, but the coach sees a lot of promise for a young team that is willing to work hard, and "carry the load." Last Thursday, the Mules lost 19-7 to Adna. "This was a great game through five innings," Coach Garrett Radcliffe said. "The Mules simply ran out of arms. Zakk Carlson was in the line-up to start pitching for the Mules but was scratched during warm ups due to...
The Wahkiakum Mules softball team is a young bunch, and with five eighth graders, three freshman, and three juniors on the team, Coach Garrett Miller feels it’s important to ease into the season. So while the season is supposed to begin today, the Lady Mules took advantage of an opportunity to play last week when a mixed varsity and junior varsity R.A. Long team rolled into town. The Lumberjills took the game, 13-9. On Thursday, (today), the Lady Mules will travel to Morton/White Pass and t...
Analysis By Karen Bertroch Naselle/Grays River Valley school board: Naselle, small that it may be, is a center of transition this spring. Two events last week gave us clear signs of change in our small area of Southwest Washington. In the past, Naselle/Grays River Valley’s School Board has often met with only two to five people attending from the public. For the past six months, a group of parents has been attending who want change in the way schools are led and decisions made. At the last b...
