Photo of the Week: Jack and June Scharback of Sisson Creek on Oneida Road. Life is taking on momentum now that we're heading toward June. Everything in my yard is "Coming up Roses" from "Gypsy" the musical, except my roses. I think the tips have frozen one too many times. But to say I had a great day today gives few hints of today's happy adventure driving out to "the end of the road" called Oneida. I sat for two hours with Jack and June Scharbach whose house is reached by walking across a...

The 10-0 victory over the Vikings gives Naselle an opportunity to play in the state regionals which will be held this week in Ridgefield. Photo by Robert Hilson....

Carlton Appelo’s 100th birthday is today: When we talk about Carlton, there is no question he made his mark on Wahkiakum County in so many ways. His father was the founder of Wahkiakum West Telephone Company. Carlton took it over after his early years in World War II and his education at University of Washington and his master’s from the University of Sweden. When he came home, he took over the telephone company and built it up for many years. His nephew, Steve Appelo, is now Board President there. Carlton grew up in Deep River along with his...

Comet eighth-grader Sadie Kilponen gets full extension with her swing and hits a line-drive off the end of the bat knocking in two runs and putting Naselle up 11-3 in early game action. The Bulldogs would make a valiant comeback and eventually tie the game in the seventh inning. But Kilponen came up big once again, and in the bottom of the seventh inning she drove a fast ball through the infield and her walk-off base hit won the game for the Comets 15-14 in Naselle on Tuesday evening. May and Mothers: We made it to May so hopefully a full blown spring is just down the line. Spring is so much better when the full sun is present for days at a time. But alas, it doesn't seem to be so. May is a tough time for me. Those of us who have the right to expect a phone call for Mother's Day, must accept the silence and let it go every year. She is always busy and there are no calls. My daughter's birthday is the same day as Carlton Appelo's, May 12. So this year I am focusing on Carlton...

Gail worked in the Shamrock Hotel as a young girl, so she has her own stories and some of the things left from the hotel, too. She invited me to come and talk with her at her home in...
