  • Martha Circle Tea made for lovely time

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 20, 2010

I’m sure everyone is aware that the iconic Rosburg Store is closed as of Monday, the 17th. The only information I have is that it will be closed indefinitely. What a gorgeous weekend. Now it looks like some more unwelcome rain and stormy weather is on the agenda for the rest of the week. News from Naselle: There will be a District track meet on Thursday at Raymond. Girl’s pole vault will start at 3:30 p.m. and the other events will follow. Go Comets! Are you looking for something fun to do on a weekend or two this summer? Hosts are needed at th...

  • Men allege meetings violations

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 13, 2010

Two men have sued the Naselle/Grays River Valley School District over alleged violations of the state's Open Public Meetings Act. The men, Steve R. Gacke and Steven Sultemeier, claim the district board of directors failed to follow the public meetings law when it held meetings in February and March. Sultemeier had been a member of the district board of directors but resigned because of his concerns the board didn't give proper notification to the public about the meetings. Listed as defendants are the school district and Hollis Fletcher, board...

  • Public meeting laws must be followed

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 13, 2010

Kudos to Steven Sultemeier and Steve Gacke for taking the Naselle/Grays River Valley School Board of Directors to task over alleged violations of the state Open Public Meetings Act. In a complaint filed May 6 in Pacific County Superior Court, the men claim the school board violated the act by holding a special meeting March 9 without posting the required 24 hours notice in advance for the public, despite Sultemeier's warning that the notice was required. The men also claim that the board's agendas for the March 9 meeting and a February 11...

  • Fashion and fun at Rosburg Hall Sunday

    Trudy Fredrickson, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 13, 2010

I hope everyone enjoyed the couple of days of sunshine we had last weekend, and that all the Moms had a wonderful day on Sunday. I had a wonderful weekend with some of our family in Oregon. The weather wasn’t the greatest but the company was. The weatherman says we may have some nice days this week, so I’m hoping to get the lawn mowed before it’s tall enough to make into hay. News from Naselle: The school year is winding down for this year with a little more than a month to go. Lots of last minute activities for many of our students, espec...

  • Refuge run will be held on May 15

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|May 6, 2010

SPOTTY--Our sunshine has been sort of hit and miss lately, and the days that had been forecast for sunny last week, were pretty spotty. Wound up being more clouds and rain showers than sun I think. Of course, it all depended on where you were, as I heard some folks were able to mow their lawns, while others would have been needing a snorkel to manage that! It looks like we may have a few days of dry weather by the time this gets delivered, so I sure hope so as the "April Showers" are getting a little old and the hail and the pounding rains...

  • Reader clarifies school board comments

    May 6, 2010

To The Eagle: I read the Naselle school board article in The Eagle last week and noted my comments were not reported correctly, practically regarding Board Policy 1440-Minutes. I have talked to several people who attended the meeting, and they said they were not able to hear everything I said. If possible, I would appreciate a correction in your next addition to reflect what I said. Superintendent Rick Pass, without board action or approval, unilaterally stopped taping the meetings at the March 16 meeting and that is supported by my verbatim co...

  • Help support safe prom and graduation

    Lia Sealund, Wah. Community Network|May 5, 2010

Each year, spring brings wonderful school rituals such as prom and graduation. They begin with so much excitement and promise yet end in tragedy for hundreds of teen drivers and their passengers. According to a national survey of more than 2,500 eleventh and twelfth graders, 90 percent of teens believe their counterparts are more likely to drink and drive on prom night and 79 percent believe the same is true for graduation night. According to the most recent local Healthy Youth Survey in Wahkiakum County, 30 percent of our tenth grade students...

  • Mother's Day on the near horizon

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 29, 2010

SAW THE SUN--Between the rain and the wind, we did see some sun last week and as this week began, it was nice all day Sunday. However, with rain coming in for the rest of the week, it looks like the rain coats and boots will be staying by the door. The heavy rains and strong winds on Monday afternoon made it miserable and seemed to chill me to the bone; with plenty of rain on Tuesday, it was still a time to huddle by the fire. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 29-May 5 are Shannon McClain, Connie Luthi, Wally Wright, Marcia M...

  • Pass will stay as N/GRV super

Cody Cooley and Betsy Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 29, 2010

Naselle school board members heard comments from a large audience of community members, staff, and students at their meeting on April 20. Naselle resident Steve Gacke proposed amending the minutes of the March 16 board meeting to reflect comments made by board member Ed Darcher, specifically suggesting that the official minutes reflect Darcher’s disagreement with former board member Steve Sultemeier’s decision to resign from the board after a March 9 workshop. Sultemeier had presented a written statement to the board giving a lack of pub...

  • Folk festival seeks stories about Mummu

    Apr 22, 2010

The Finnish-American Folk Festival of Naselle is asking people of all ages to share stories about their grandmothers, more familiarly known as Mummu in Finnish. The theme of the 2010 festival is “My Mummu and Me.” To make the entries even more inclusive, grandmothers may submit their own stories; also folks may submit stories of women epitomize the characteristics of a grandmother. Organizers suggest participants recall that special moment that reveals connections between the generations and the wisdom of everyday life, and they welcome bot...

  • Labels should indeed be chosen carefully

    Apr 22, 2010

To The Eagle: Re: Ron Ackermann’s letter published 15 April 2010. It is obvious that Mr. Ackermann is unfamiliar with our local Representative, lame duck Democrat Brian Baird. I suggest he Google “brownshirt Pelosi Reid Baird” before drafting another letter to the Eagle. Regarding Tea Party members calling themselves ‘teabaggers’, I further suggest that Tea Party members do not ridicule and denigrate themselves with such vile sexual slang. If they would, they would probably consider themselves ‘teabaggees’ being ‘teabagged’ by Democrat polit...

Grays River resident Keith E. Hillsbery, 70, died in Portland, Ore. on April 11, 2010. Born in Astoria, Ore. on December 2, 1939 he was the son of Edward and Delores (Lawson) Hillsbery. • Stevan's back; let's shoot photos

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 15, 2010

Eagle readers don't miss much, and I like that. It will be easy to notice that we have an article by reporter Stevan Morgain. His stories and photos have been missing since January. It seems that last fall, his doctors told him he had a tumor on a kidney, and he needed surgery to remove the tumor. The good news was that the tumor wasn't malignant; the bad news was it would be a long, rough road to recovery. We're pleased that he's getting there. For the past two weeks, we've been publicizing a photo contest, "A Day in the Life of Wahkiakum and...

  • Fire safety program at Grange hall

    Kay Chamberlain, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 8, 2010

THE LION ROARS-- We definitely had Spring and April arrive with a roar; wind, rain and power outages were the norm the last few days. It's been boots and galoshes weather rather than sleeveless dresses and cute sandals, which we all thought we'd wear for Easter! Spring sprung a leak, I believe. Let's hope some nicer weather arrives soon as these low and mid 30 degree temperatures at night are keeping the flannel sheets on much longer than expected! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from April 8-14 are Tim Parker, Kylie Thacker, Paul Tos...

  • Grays River election draws interest

    Rick Nelson, Wah. Co. Eagle|Apr 8, 2010

A small election has drawn lots of interest in the Grays River Valley. Vote-by-mail ballots will be mailed Friday to landowners in the valley for election of members of the Grays River Habitat Enhancement District Board of Directors. The district, which is essentially a flood or erosion control district, has a three-person board of commissioners, and all positions are up for election. The term has ended for the Position 1, held by Delvin Fredricksen, and the unfinished terms of two candidates who resigned from office are also up for election. P...

  • Happy Easter to one and all

    Apr 1, 2010

WILD START--The last week in March is beginning pretty wild with wind, rain, thunder, lightning and power outages. Does this mean April will come in like a lamb? Sure hope so! From the sounds of it, we're going to have a pretty wet week, so keep your eyes on the creeks and dikes and report any flooding to the Sheriff's Office immediately. I didn't hear any flood warnings yet but that can always change, so it's best to be on our toes! As today is April Fools Day, I hope you aren't getting fooled too much, but if you were the victim of a really...
