My friends, it was bound to happen. I got Lois Burkhalter's dates mixed up, so I'll try again. She was born in 1940, not married in 1940. Yes, I'm embarrassed, but there's more. They came to Naselle in 1964, not 1966, and she had their four children in the years 1960-1970, not 1950-1960. May I simply say it was an "Off Day" when I wrote that? Lois, I am very sorry. I really should have caught at least one of those. I sincerely hope all the information this week is correct, lots of dates and...

Jackson Blalock with "Sea Change" came to visit me to ask about my thoughts on the Grays River, what I know about the river's history and my thoughts on what can be done to help the river. As we visited, I realized he's coming at his thinking in a good way because he wants to learn what "we the people" think and want before he starts making any plans. He has read past reports and studies and he understands a great deal of the information others have offered. He made me quite happy when he...

While going through old files in my computer, I found a folder named “Maki files.” I opened it and found a treasure. One short piece shows an old photo of a wide open valley in the upper Grays. It took me a minute, but when I saw the old house in the middle, I knew it was the Gorley property up Fossil Creek Road at the bottom of KM Hill. Underneath, in the first paragraph, a new world opened for me. It says, “Herman Katajamaki came from Nurmo, Finland to America in 1892. Here he met and married Amanda Harfu in 1894. Amanda had a sister, Sophia...
On Tuesday, March 21, the Naselle Grays River Valley School Board met, moving through a full agenda. One board member was absent, Tyson Vogeler. Several community members were present giving the board added input. The board approved the hiring of Cody Olsen for JV softball coach. For unfinished business, Policy 4210, Regulations of Dangerous Weapons on School Premises, Superintendent Lisa Nelson reported that she had consulted with a legal advisor who read through the various options developed by not only the staff and board, but also with citi...

Photo of the week: Theo Burkhalter spent time with me last Saturday so I could interview him in depth about his life, his adoption process, and the Washington State School for the Blind in Vancouver where he lives five days a week. He comes home by bus to Kelso, then is picked up and brought home to be with his family over the weekend, then he catches the bus back to Vancouver on Sunday afternoons. Theo was born in China, then adopted from an orphanage by the Burkhalters. A friend of Susan's tol...
The Wahkiakum Mules baseball team started their season with a 9-1 loss to Naselle on Monday. With wet weather expected, the game was moved to Astoria to play on a turf field. “Naselle is the defending state champs in their classification,” Mule Coach Garrett Radcliffe said, “and we had a very young inexperienced lineup due to players being ineligible for various reasons.” “We were able to jump out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to some great small-ball from the top of their lineup,” Radcliffe said. “A number of defensive errors allowed Nasel...
