WARM WEEKEND--After some rain last weekend, it looks like things are heating up this week and it will feel more like Summer than most of Summer felt. So, when Fall officially starts this Friday, we'll be basking in temperatures in the 80s they say, so it's not time to put away the sun screen quite yet. The rain last weekend didn't make those with outdoor plans too happy, but I'm sure all the plants enjoyed the drink and it helped lower our fire danger in the woods, so it was really a good thing. With time ticking away, that batch of rain we...

HOT ONE--Several days last week were quite toasty, as was half the weekend, so while school started, hunting season began and we are thinking Fall, it felt like Summer had finally shown up and about cooked us all! I'm glad it was cooling off as it was a bit much for some of us, and the poor kids who had to practice and play football in this heat, were certainly not enjoying it. Of course, when it starts raining and blowing, it won't be much fun either. As this work week begins the clouds have moved in and it's about 25 degrees cooler. We may...
Fall is in the air! At least in the early morning hours and in the evening. I guess the few short weeks of summer is all we are going to get. Philip Timothy McNally, 54, of Littlerock, passed away August 5, 2011, at home with his loving wife, best friend, and soul mate, Cindy Ellington McNally by his side. Tim was born January 1, 1957, in Longview, to Bob and Joanne McNally. He attended elementary school in Cathlamet, and graduated from Naselle High School in 1975 where he played sports, and was a member of the basketball team that played in the state tournament. Tim loved sports, and especially enjoyed the Seattle Seahawks and Mariners. He was a giving, caring, and loving man who...
On the warm Labor Day weekend, Fred Johnson opened his Naselle farm for a celebration of farming, good food and music called Farmstock, as a fundraiser for KMUN Coast Radio. Farmstock brought together regional farmers, musicians and those seeking to learn about farming. Experts offered talks on poultry farming, seed saving and living an off-the-grid lifestyle. When Teed Prestegard of Cathlamet heard about Farmstock, he said, “I thought it was going to be like Woodstock. I know I wasn’t the only one who thought that.” JoAnn Prestegard said,...
I’m not complaining but don’t you find it unusual that it is raining in Yucca Valley, California, and not in Grays River? With all this warm dry weather, we have been able to finally put down our hardwood flooring and are in process of putting the final coats of finish on. What a job, but certainly worth it. News from Naselle: Good job, Comets on last Friday’s football game. Keep up the good work. Sports on the schedule for Naselle include: Thursday-volleyball at home with Ilwaco at 5:45 p.m.; Friday-football at home with Knappa at 7 p.m.;...
COOLER/STILL NICE--As this work week began, a few clouds rolled in and we had a couple of spritzes of rain, but after a little of the same on Monday, we saw sunshine and it was a pretty decent day. It looks like we'll continue to have some decent weather this week. As a matter of fact, last weekend was perfect. I heard from Kelly Hammond in Virginia and she and other family members had gone inland and were just fine, and even upon returning home, only found minor damages to the house. Jamie Kincaid was fine in North Carolina and didn't even...
News from Naselle: September already, and school begins again. It seems like summer just started, and now it’s time for new classes, fall sports and cooler weather once again. At least the nice daytime temperatures seem to be hanging around. Today (Thursday) is the first day of school for the 2011/12 class year at the Naselle-Grays River Valley School District, and the sports teams have already had a few weeks of practice. Sports schedules for this week include: Friday, football at home with Ilwaco at 7 p.m.; Wednesday, volleyball at Knappa a...
The Wahkiakum School District Board met August 24 and approved contracts for district staff and heard from youth leadership about additional efforts needed to reduce marijuana use. Districts across the state have handled the state legislature’s 1.9 percent cut to teacher wages reductions differently, Superintendent Bob Garrett said. Some have no funds to offset losses and others have large enough cash reserves to make up all of the teachers’ loss. The Wahkiakum board agreed to offset the loss to teacher’s salaries by reducing the hours they...
DRIPPY BEGINNING--This work week is beginning a little damp, not making any hay-makers happy, but my lawn is probably thrilled as it was looking a little parched. The full week of dry weather that some forecasted fell apart as a weak system came in and gave us some heavy cloud cover Sunday evening and this light rain Monday morning. By Monday evening the drizzle turned into down right rain, and the clearing that I thought we'd have by Tuesday, certainly didn't show up here Tuesday morning either. It's another wet one I'm afraid. FAIR TIME--It...
A workshop on producing biochar has been added to Farmstock, KMUN's regional homegrown festival Labor Day Weekend, September 3-4, at Fred's Farm in Naselle. Jim Karnofski, retired registered nurse and microbiologist, will demonstrate his kit for producing biochar in the home and explain how biochar has been used by indigenous cultures for millennia to turn marginal soil into long-lasting nirvana for vegetables. Karnofski joins the roster of workshops to be presented all day Saturday at Farmstock. Scheduled for three sessions, visitors to the...
I don’t know about you but the warm rain was quite refreshing at the beginning of this week. Don’t get me wrong, I like the sunshine, but when it gets above 80, it’s too hot. That was one of the many reasons to leave California. The farmers making hay probably didn’t appreciate the rain much as many of them are still trying to get the bales into the barns, and there are still quite a few bales in the fields. It looks like more good weather on the way though, at least through the weekend. News from Naselle: One more week until school begins...
Kim Angelis and Josef will open for Farmstock, KMUN's Regional Homegrown Festival at 7 p.m., September 3. Angelis will be joined by guitarist and partner, Josef, as part of Farmstock's full day of music. "Gypsy Kim and Josef are long-time supporters of Coast Community Radio," says Tom Hartland, Development Director for Tillicum Foundation, the non-profit corporation operating KMUN 91.9FM. "Their high-energy musicianship thrills audiences at every performance." Music for Farmstock begins at 1 p.m. with Anitize, veteran folk and country artist...
We enjoyed the week visiting with our nephew and niece from California. Didn’t get a whole lot done on the house but the hardwood flooring is just about ready to go down. Who knew that any moisture variance would make it impossible to install until the percentage was right. We didn’t. Hopefully readers will learn something from our experience, regarding hardwood floors in our moist area. When you spend lots of money to purchase the product, you don’t want it to buckle once it’s installed. We are very happy with the end result though, and onl...

News from Naselle: I had a call from Josie Ciambetti with a reminder that the Wahkiakum County Fair will have an extra special concession during this year’s three day run. The Naselle High School Cheerleaders will be cooking and serving two wonderful treats to the fairgoers. You can chow down on tamales and chicken adobo while you are enjoying the fair and at the same time helping the cheerleaders in their fund raising efforts for their cheerleading camp. The Wahkiakum County Fair will be held in Skamokawa on August 18, 19 and 20. One of G...
It looks like summer has actually arrived. Gardens are finally growing, farmers and making hay, and the sun is shining for more than a couple of hours a week. I guess we had better enjoy this break as it may be gone in a week, if Mother Nature stays true to form. Speaking of haying, Darrel Sotka just pulled in with his mower to mow our fields. I hope he doesn’t get lost in the high grass. Don’t forget the summer activities going on at the Timberland Library in Naselle. Summer is the perfect time to catch up on your reading, while sitting in a c...
Wahkiakum School Board met July 19 to approve the district’s budget for the coming school year. In addition, the board discussed transportation to a transition program for special education students, considered a change order for ongoing maintenance work, and approved changes to the high school student handbook. After discussing the proposed 2011-2012 fiscal year budget with District Superintendent Bob Garrett, the board voted to adopt it as submitted. The line item expenditure budget is broken down into the following categories: General F...
The heart of the Appelo Archive Center in Naselle is hundreds of feet of video tape recording the lives of people in western Wahkiakum County and eastern Pacific County, but the Center is multi-faceted and still growing. On the first floor, the former Appelo grocery store houses Bobbi Caton’s Creative Flair Flower Shop as well as the archive’s gift shop and visitor center, with a Grays River covered bridge exhibit on display. Upstairs, where Santa once visited children when the grocery operated, there is an elevator-sized display of local wom...
First of all, an apology and a correction. In last week's column I wrote about a July 3 barbecue. The barbecue was held at Bobby Olmstead’s home, and was attended by Eddie Wirkkala, his son Warren, his girlfriend and daughter, Ralph Olmstead of Naselle, his friend Susie from Long Beach, Junior Johnson of Vader and Bob and Geri Lee from Grays River. Thank you for the corrections Geri, and my apologies to those I identified incorrectly. I had the pleasure of attending a special meeting with Wahkiakum county commissioners and Chuck Beyer on T...
