In recent years, our national political culture has moved into a state of mistrust. And over the past months, it has become clear that even in our small school district, board meetings reflect mistrust. At the last meeting of the Naselle Grays River Valley School District on October 17, during public comment, it was again time to complain, insult, and berate the Board and the Superintendent. Adam Rose: “There is a lack of transparency, a dictatorship. During covid students were told not to protest. Coercion. Then redacted documents. Only t...

One misty, moisty morning, when cloudy was the weather, I chanced to meet an old man dressed all in leather. Anyone remember this old nursery rhyme? I used to recite it to my kids when it was raining as they readied themselves for the school bus. It was my way of saying be smart about what coat you use today. The rain sure fell last night and continues today (Monday). And I think I heard we might have thunder this afternoon. Good day to clean house and nap. Fall means watching for the local...
IT WAS NICE, THEN IT WASN'T — It's that time of year when we get a few nice days and then we get a few wet days, so trying to get a lot of things done during the drier days is a challenge. I hope you’re prepared for winter mode as it can appear at any time and you don't want to be wish you'd been more prepared for outages, slides, road closures, flooding and all that other fun stuff we often get around here. SPECIAL DAYS — Folks celebrating birthdays this week are: Kalisha Mace, Cameron Collins, Heidi Heywood, Dixie Anderson, Randy Kuhn, Aron...

What a treat this morning (Monday) to wash dishes while listening to the River Writers interview on the radio. Cathlamet's Dayle Olson interviewed Skamokawa writer, Irene Martin, on KMUN, Astoria's public radio station. Irene is a prominent historian of our county, so it was great to hear her voice, and especially her thoughts on the future of salmon. I need to apologize to all my west county folks because I misspelled Salme hill in this column last week. I cannot imagine how many times I have...
"Woah, it's like an airplane," one of my schoolmates said in awe. We all loaded onto the charter bus. The wood panel floor, the reclining seats, and on-board bathroom were fancier than the yellow school buses we were all used to. It was five in the morning, and we were headed to the Kitsap Naval Base in Bremerton for a tour of the U.S.S. Maine (S.S.B.N. 741), an Ohio-Class Ballistic Submarine, and the Trident Training Facility in Bangor. The trip was arranged following the success of our school'...
Wahkiakum High School students are learning about all the work that goes on behind the scenes of film and television production, thanks to Ken Johnson and Jeremiah Rounds of Wahkiakum West. The hands-on class is taking the teens through the whole process from pre- production to post-production, and making what may seem like an out of reach career entirely accessible. "We've been talking to both Wahkiakum and Naselle schools about ways to engage the kids and some of the stuff we do as far as...

WHAT A STORM — Last week was exciting, and not in a good way. That wind that ripped through really did a number on dozens of trees, destroyed carports, and caused multiple power outages. West Valley wound up with a six-hour outage. Thankfully it wasn't in the midst of freezing weather or a foot of snow. Kudos to the lineman working from Altoona to Puget Island; since the downed trees have to be moved first, it's always a big job. Once again, Mother Nature has given us a heads and has shown us how prepared we are. Considering it is only O...
From Nick Nikkila on Facebook: "Far and Wide" has now compiled a list of "America's Coolest Small Towns by State." 'For the state of Washington, it must have been a difficult decision with Deep River in the running, but Friday Harbor, established in 1909 with a population of 2,747 was selected. The town's description was given as: Washington State's best-kept secret is its San Juan Island archipelago. Waters filled with orcas, seals and sea lions surround charming islands brimming with cuteness...
by Karen Bertroch When the NGRV School Board met on September 19, there was a good-sized audience with comments and questions. They were, for the most part, respectful. On the other hand, board member Tyson Vogeler continues to challenge most items on the agenda and how the meeting is run. His actions set a tone for everyone in the room to do the same, which is unfortunate. To my knowledge, no one on the board is embezzling money. Nor is the board intentionally ignoring state law involving board procedures. As the “newspaper lady” att...

The rain has arrived, it's steady and most welcome. One more way we know it's fall, I changed sheets on my bed and put on flannel ones, as well as the comforter. I wrote a commentary on the local school board meeting for The Eagle, but did not include any report on business handled. At the last board meeting, they approved hirings, policies and the purchase of a new transport van at $85,450. It looks like enrollment will be a bit over 300 students, much like last year, but the final number will...
The Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors started their meeting with a presentation from Apollo Solutions, which looks for ways to reduce energy consumptions in buildings, and has been helping Wahkiakum in the background find ways to address their aging facilities. Scott Lewis gave a recap and provided a timeline for what comes next with the $5 million grant the district was recently awarded. He said a $35,000 had been approved for an engineer to determine project costs, and that...
"Certain places kind of haunt you," Carl Wirkkala told me on the phone the other day. He remembers grinding cascara bark and catching crawdads with poles cut by his grandmother, who lived in an old house along Knappton Road in Naselle. When he was young, he would tell his dad and his uncle "weird stories about police." The two men would take little Carl on trips looking for scrap iron among the dark, dilapidated houses of Frankfort, a ghost town that was set to be the new Astoria. "It never...
Commissioners from across the state were expected to arrive in Cathlamet on Thursday morning as part of a plan from the Washington State Association of Counties’ Legislative Steering Committee to give them a first hand view of the variety of concerns facing rural counties. Wahkiakum County Commissioner Lee Tischer was initially nervous about being the first county on the list for visits, but the feeling turned to disappointment as one commissioner after another canceled their trip to s...
No decision has been made as to what will be done with the now-defunct Naselle Youth Camp, and it will be at least late next year before any formal decision is made. A committee working to decide what will happen continues to meet and ponder ideas, with a gathering planned soon in Naselle. The camp closed on Sept. 25, 2022, and has remained dormant other than a handful of workers maintaining and guarding the facility. Once a proud economic backbone of Naselle, the campus is now quiet and...
STILL PRETTY DRY--This past week saw temperatures back up in the high 80s, so it was pretty doggone toasty for September but things cooled down over the weekend; just mid 70s here, so that was quite nice. We had some brief drops of rain on Sunday and then a foggy, damp start to this work week so we got a snitch of moisture. Any of that is welcomed by my poor dried up lawn and thirsty plants! It looks like we are going to stay dry this week with those cooler but yet very nice temperatures, so we’ll see if that holds as they mentioned the p...

Dear Readers: Let's start with the memory of September 11, 2001. Recruits into the service today may not have been born yet or may have been babies when it happened twenty-two years ago. How quickly history fades. Let us not forget those who climbed hundreds of stairs and headed into the fires and devastation. Let us always pause to pray for their families and those who lost so much. Let us remember our own first responders here in our rural area because they are all volunteers leaving their...
The Wahkiakum Mules volleyball team is 0-3 in non-conference games this week. They started their season last Wednesday at home with a three set loss to R.A Long. "It was a slow start for us, but on the bright side, there's a lot of room for growth," Coach Kayli Hurley said. Standouts for Hurley include Amirah Abdul Kariem and Jessie Lafever with good backcourt play. The following day the team hosted Willapa Valley and lost in three sets. "We showed growth on the floor tonight," Hurley said, "it...
Travelers along both directions of State Route 401, also knowns as the Lewis and Clark Trail Highway, between Naselle and Megler, in Pacific County, will need to plan ahead and add extra time for travel. Starting Monday, Sept. 11, Washington State Department of Transportation’s contractor, Rognlin’s Inc., will fully close SR 401 near Knappton and begin the work to fully restore access along this stretch of highway and stabilize the adjacent slope. What to expect From 7 a.m., Monday, Sept. 11, and continuing for up to five weeks: An aro...
