  • Downriver Dispatches

    Darrell Alexander|May 9, 2019

Gone, but not forgotten While coming back from Altoona after taking pics of Pillar Rock for The Focus on Wahkiakum, I took a detour down to Eden Valley. I was not looking to write this story, but the inspiration that followed changed everything. While driving and perusing the landscape I realized that many of the old farm lands are overgrown with marsh grasses unfit for cattle. These early pioneers took sometimes decades to clear enough arable land to make a decent living as a farmer. They would...

  • Lady Mules persevere, improve their softball

    Diana Zimmerman|May 2, 2019

The Wahkiakum Mules softball team dropped four more games this week, but the young team continues to show improvement all around. Last Wednesday, they lost a non-league game to Naselle 17-0. "The score does not show the great strides of improvement this group is making," Coach Stephanie Green said. "Pitching is coming along really well with Sydney Akinsuli and Jordyn Watson. We made a few errors that made the gap widen but the steps to making plays and improvement are noticeable." In Winlock on...

  • Corrections furnished for musical associations

    Apr 25, 2019

To The Eagle: There were a few errors in the April 18 article "News from the new Naselle Community Center." The wind ensemble is associated with the North Coast Symphonic Band, not an orchestra; and while there are two orchestras in the Astoria area (the North Oregon Coast Symphony and the Columbia River Symphony), there is no "Astoria Philharmonic." Finally, while you could not have known at the time of publication because we had not yet selected a name, the name of our quintet is the Columbia Wind Quintet. Thank you for your promotion of the...
