  • Thanks expressed for many years of service

    Dec 1, 2022

To The Eagle: Just a short letter to wish Cindi Grasseth a happy retirement from the front desk at the Wahkiakum clinic. Rumor has it that many years ago she sat down close to the end of Una street in Cathlamet and within moments a building was built around her and a medical practice was established. She has survived an untold number of doctors, nurse practitioners and thousands of patients over her decades long career. Thank you so very much from the bottom of our collective hearts. As the youngsters are fond of saying, You Rock! Thanks!...

  • A pioneer Christmas in SW Washington

    Dec 1, 2022

by Maude Kimball Butler, (1880-1963) Edited by Karen Bertroch As I read accounts of the pioneer Christmas celebrations it occurs to me that the observances depended on the locality and the backgrounds of the settlers. For that reason, it may be interesting to know how we celebrated the day of days in an isolated spot in Southwestern Washington. The few settlers included ex-employees of the Hudson's Bay Company, New Englanders, Irish, Californians, and Mid-westerners. In 1882, my parents, both...

  • Bazaar season is upon us in Wahkiakum County

    Kay Chamberlain|Dec 1, 2022

WHAT WILL WE GET?--As this week begins, the forecast is a mixed bag, with some saying we could get some snow and some saying it’s just going to freeze, while others are saying rain every day, so I guess we will just have to wait and see what shows up. As we all know, the weather can vary around here from Skamokawa to Cathlamet and even from valley to valley and day to day, so it’s just best to be prepared for the worst scenario and then hope for the best, as it’s much easier to deal with the worst if we’re ready for it. I’m not a lover of...

  • Town will receive grant for Waterfront Park

    Rick Nelson|Nov 24, 2022

Surprise! Just weeks after learning their application for a state Recreation and Conservation Office (RCO) grant to construct Waterfront Park had been rated too low for funding, Town of Cathlamet officials learned last week that, indeed, RCO would award funds for the project. Mayor David Olson said Monday that the award would be for the town's application in the two-year 2020 funding cycle, not the latest application for the 2022 cycle. The town's 2020 application had been ranked in 24th positio...

  • Very busy weekend scheduled for county

    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 24, 2022

BRR--We have certainly had some chilly temperatures in West Valley this past week and I can say with all certainty that I’m not at all fond of those mid-20 degree temps we were having, as that’s just too cold for me! Plus, what happened to our fall? It seems we went from hot and dry to frigid and miserable without any cooler but dry and pleasant days! However, the weather folks say it’s going to warm up this week but it doesn’t come with any dry weather, but plenty of rain instead, so we won’t be dealing with icy roads anymore but we will be h...

  • Legislators are tax hungry thugs

    Nov 17, 2022

To The Eagle: Washington State has been a Democratic regime since 1985. I regard today’s legislators as tax hungry thugs; take for example vehicle tabs. Twice it was on the ballot a $30 vehicle tabs only; it passed both times, in 2002 and 2019. Once again, after paying $30 the first year, they disrespected our votes and resumed adding taxes/fees the following year. To this day, they continue to add taxes, fees and regulations to the point that American business people cannot prosper. Is that what we hired these thugs for? For them to sit on t...

  • Pet food drive and bingo this weekend

    Kay Chamberlain|Nov 17, 2022

NIPPY--I’m not sure everyone has had the cool temperatures at their house, but mine have been below freezing for several evenings, so I hope you’re staying warm with this chill in the air! The sunny days are nice however, so I think it beats the wet, nasty days that we had and while they may not be quite as cold, they certainly are more miserable when they hang around very long. Beings we’ve had some very nasty weather around Thanksgiving time, which included some major flooding, I’m crossing my fingers that this year we will have none of that...
