Structural and system failures plagued Wahkiakum School District over the holiday break. Outside pipes burst in the bus garage and the grandstand two days after the big freeze taking Maintenance Supervisor Paul Lawrence, Transportation Supervisor Calvin Grasseth, and David McNally from the Town of Cathlamet away from their families on Christmas morning to contend with the issue and get it all shut off, according to Superintendent Brent Freeman. Freeman visits the facilities regularly, and did a...
To The Eagle: The Eagle recently announced that the Butler St parking lot’s first phase of construction is complete and partially ready for use. Town taxpayers though need to understand the horrendous cost they’ve incurred for this project: · Past Mayor Jacobson had the town pay over $60,000 to “a friend” for this literally contaminated lot. This was twice the then current appraised market value ... assuming it wasn’t contaminated. About two years ago, current Mayor David Olson made developing the Butler St lot his personal agenda, and...
The parking lot on Butler Street is paved and painted now, but grumbles at the Town of Cathlamet meeting last week regarding the process and its somewhat unsatisfying results prove it continues to be a source of vexation. An EV station has yet to be installed, and plans for a kiosk are still in the works, but according to Town Council Member Robert Stowe, the lot has already cost the town $600,000. "The way it looks now it's a fait accompli, we're stuck with it pretty much," Stowe said. "I...

Wahkiakum County Commissioners and District 19 legislators on Tuesday discussed issues the county board would like to see addressed in the coming session of the Washington State Legislature. Rep. Joel McEntire, R-Cathlamet, met with the board in person, and Senator Jeff Wilson, R-Kalama attended via Zoom. Rep. Jim Walsh, R-Aberdeen, reportedly had a scheduling conflict. Topics ranged from compensating counties with trust timberlands that are encumbered by species habitat restrictions to laws affecting law enforcement and drug offenders. For...
General Manager Dan Kay addressed substation security issues at the Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday. “We are taking it seriously,” he said. “Wahkiakum PUD is aware of substation vandalism events that have occurred recently in the Pacific Northwest and around our country. We have and are coordinating with our law enforcement agencies to communicate and increase the security at our substations. As part of this we cannot discuss specific details of our mitigation meas...
To The Eagle: As each reader has no doubt experienced, the area in and around Cathlamet can be breathtaking and incredibly peaceful: it is a situation that is unique compared with nearly every other city on the lower Columbia River. While we are aviation enthusiasts ourselves (but not pilots), my family and I wanted to urge our fellow citizens to contact the county commissioners and ask them to reject all proposals for any type of seaplane hanger, ramp, or base near Cathlamet or on the Cathlamet channel. In our letter parts 2 and 3, we explored...
In last week's paper, Assessor Falon Hoven's position was incorrectly described as appointed. She was elected to the position. And to clarify, the cell phone tower described in Mayor David Olson's comments to the county board of commissioners is located on land belonging to the Town of Cathlamet, which will negotiate an updated lease with the service provider....

ANOTHER YEAR--Well, we’re five days into 2023 and we’ve had some wild weather to end 2022 and to start 2023 as well, so I’m hoping for some milder stuff for awhile. We certainly had some horrible road conditions over Christmas and then later we saw heavy rains with some low land flooding and then we tossed in some super sonic thunder and brilliant lightning so that was definitely impressive! The earlier forecast of some dry weather for this week quickly fell apart and now it looks to be wet and stormy as well, so I hope you’re stocked up and...

Happy New Year, my friends! This is my third annual writing folder for Eagle articles. We've all been through a lot over the past two years and I hope and pray we're only going higher, happier and healthier. During the past quiet week, I spent time in one of my favorite history books, "Water Under the Bridge" by Ruth Busse Allingham. I particularly enjoyed the chapter on Marie Fauver, one of the first people I visited with when I moved to Grays River in 2005. I first lived in Cathlamet after...

Kitty Johnson, 81, born Kathleen Jewel Rydell, of Tumwater Washington, passed away gracefully on November 26, 2022 after an ongoing battle with heart failure. She graduated from Marycliff High School (1959) and earned her Bachelor's in Art at Fort Wright College (1963). Her education took her back and forth to Spokane...

Wahkiakum County commissioners set salaries for elected officials and adopted the county's 2023 budget when they met Tuesday. The board also approved contracts for the Health and Human Service Department and a resolution and contract establishing a public defender services program. Starting January 1, salaries for the county auditor, assessor, clerk, sheriff and treasurer will be based on the salary of a sitting superior court judge, which is set by the state salary commission. The sheriff's salary will be 50 percent of the judge's salary, and...
To The Eagle: Now that Christmas is finally past, our CHINO (Christian in name only) friends can return to the thoughtless cruelty they're so good at. I well imagine the Lord and Savior was appalled that the powers that be in Texas couldn't even wait until after the birthday of the Lord to bus several dozens of immigrants to well below freezing Washington DC and dropping them off, infants included, in front of the vice president’s residence. Some of these folks were without shoes and none were prepared for the weather. Just shouts out the value...
To The Eagle: RE: A Seaplane base at Cathlamet. We are concerned Cathlamet residents who love this city we call home. But while I am an aviation enthusiast myself (but not a pilot), my family and I wanted to urge our fellow citizens to contact and petition the county commissioners to REJECT all proposals for a seaplane hanger, a seaplane ramp, or a seaplane base in any location near Cathlamet or on the Cathlamet channel. Two weeks ago in Part 1, we explored the potentially annoying noise impact. Then last week in Part 2, we talked about: the...

PRETTY UGLY--I think we can all agree that last week's weather was pretty awful, as “Ole Man Winter” really made his debut a powerful one and that ice storm we had really came on fast and definitely made road travel treacherous. One stretch of I-5 saw 20 roll over accidents in just a few hours and most agreed that the streets were “ice rinks” and people should stay home. Even air travel was deeply impacted as hundreds of flights got cancelled and people were stranded all across the states, so it was really a brutal holiday weekend for hundred...
