  • Song Circle is at the Grange Hall on Sunday

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 16, 2023

WET BEGINNING--It’s a tadbit soggy out there as I begin this column as one of our atmospheric rivers is making itself known. Of course, if you’ve been here awhile, it’s just known as a typical rainy stretch of weather and it’s not anything too special unless it dumps two or three inches of rain on us every day, so I’m hoping that doesn’t occur! However, we need to make preparations for when these extra wet days cause a bit of flooding over our roadways and the potential for slides, etc., are more apt to occur, so let’s hope we’ve all bee...

STILL WINTER--Waking up to a dusting of snow last week and seeing temperatures still dipping below freezing with more cold and wet weather to come this week, has definitely reminded me that winter is still here! I’m sure we’re all looking forward to spring and warmer weather but considering I’ve seen it snow here in April I don’t think warmth is necessarily coming as it’s definitely not a guarantee around these parts! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from March 9-15 are Gretchen Mahitka, Mark Whitaker, Azery Gribskov, Gladys Mace, Kenn...

  • Downriver Dispatches

    Karen Bertroch|Mar 9, 2023

March is raining by. It's sure strange to have snow and hail and rain and wind, oh but wait...it's still winter, isn't it? Did lots of reading in past couple weeks. First a fairly new biography of Julia Butler Hansen that's top notch by John Hughes. Mayor David Olson showed it to me, so I borrowed it and got my own copy. I cannot understand why someone in Cathlamet isn't selling it. Since the Mayor is working hard on recognizing the importance of her life and her house, it would be nice to have...

  • CRT is actual history

    Mar 2, 2023

To The Eagle: To say I was shocked by Fox News being for entertainment only would do a disservice to my integrity. When they finally admitted it was when I was shocked, but only for a moment. When it was revealed that the powers that own and run the network were losing audience and money, they quickly reversed themselves and went back to telling sweet lies to the folks that wanted nothing to do with the actual truth. Of course their ratings along with audience went back to their previous levels. Somewhat along the same lines is the regrettable...

  • The truth for a change

    Mar 2, 2023

To The Eagle: A letter in last week’s Eagle written by the liberal Town Crier loaded with a ton of personal beliefs purported to be facts can not go unchallenged. I grew up in New York City in integrated neighborhoods, went to school where I was the only White kid in my classes for years. I was one of only two whites in our large Cub Scout Den and Boy Scout Troop. I served in the Army with many black soldiers. I have been in three integrated Labor Unions. So I have been a member of the great American melting pot and referred to by my many Black...

  • Winter weather will be here for a bit longer

    Kay Chamberlain|Mar 2, 2023

STILL WINTER--If you live in my neck of the woods, you woke this past Sunday, Feb. 26, with no power and lots of snow on the ground. The snow was very pretty but as the “dusting” of predicted snow turned into several inches, my enjoyment started to wane just a bit. Couple that with trees falling down and taking out power lines, which affected many over Ingalls Road, West Valley Road and along SR 4 from the rock pit to KM, that was not exactly welcomed. A big “thank you” to PUD crews for coming out once again and fixing a mess along Ingalls...
