Dan Cothren presided over the weekly commissioners meeting with the other two commissioners attending via zoom. In the public comment portion of the meeting a Westend resident expressed concern about new development on Altoona-Pillar Rock Rd. She said that a homeowner had counted seven vacation rentals on the road, leading to increased traffic. The homeowner was concerned that publicity about the road would further increase traffic. This started a wide ranging debate about timber companies selling land for development, new home projects not...

TOASTY--If you wanted the heat to show up, you certainly got your wish for Mother’s Day weekend as most areas around our parts were sporting temperatures in either the upper 80s or low 90s and that was plenty hot for me! I believe our temperature gauge said 94 and to me, that’s just miserable and it means “hiding indoors in the AC” so it might as well be raining! Anyway, for all you “like it hot” folks, I hope you enjoyed it and didn’t get too sunburned! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays from May 18-24 are Courtney Helms, Mitch Moonen,...

Terry Thornton, Born October 3, 1949. Died May 5, 2023. If you know the story, that date really tells you all you need to know about Terry. He was due on Christmas day. Do the math. October 3. December 25. We know he weighed less than 3 pounds when he was born. He didn’t have fingernails. Toenails. Eyebrows. Hair on his head. He was too frail to weigh, and was rushed to an incubator. But he survived. Despite the head nurse who told his dad, waiting fearfully with the other dads, “not to waste a name you like on ‘it.’” Because “it” wouldn’t make...

If Laurel Waller could harness the warm energy that greeted me when I walked into the Hotel Cathlamet last week, she could probably save on her monthly heating bill. It was the first of what may be many quilters retreats at the establishment, and the lobby was filled with women sitting at tables, working at sewing machines varying from the style my own grandmother might have used, to modern tech driven machines I never knew existed, and art, lots of art, in fabric form. Karen Bruggman of...

The NRHP is the federal government’s official list of districts, sites, building, structures, and objects deemed worthy of preservation for their historical significance or great artistic value. It’s...
To The Eagle: About that true info; who controls the MSM news (mainstream media)? Why would we want to partner with NATO, WHO and these foreign affairs? We’re paying each of these leaders a salary of millions of dollars. What do we get in return from them? Nothing and they’re smiling all the way to their bank with our money. I recall a letter a while back that someone hadn’t mowed their lawn because of high gas prices. I did the same thing, too. It was an eyesore for my neighbors. But whose fault is that? I didn’t vote for him but you did. Yo...

My father's father came from Sweden. He passed on some cultural traits that my father passed to me. One very important trait is that one should Never act as if one is special. At least that's how the lore came to me. And so, here comes Monday, May 1. Sheriff Mark Howie and yet unknown people conspired to create a community welcome as I came home to go into hospice care. We followed Sheriff Howie down Columbia Street and on to Main Street. What a sight on Main. People were lined up from one end t...
