  • Firefighters respond to Puget Island blaze

    Last Wednesday, volunteer firefighters responded to a second structure fire in Wahkiakum County in less than a week. The first was on May 28 on Altoona/Pillar Rock Road. The second fire, unrelated, was on Puget Island. According to Tom Merz, the incident commander for the event on Puget Island on May 31, crews were dispatched for a structure fire on South Welcome Slough at 8:36 p.m. Personnel arrived at 26 South Welcome Slough to find a single story, single family residential structure ablaze....

    Computer Link Northwest hosted a community computing workshop last Thursday at the Appelo Annex at Vista Park in Skamokawa from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Steve Carson, Ed Lane, and Julia Wadlow gave out computers and laptops to people who qualified through a Digital Navigator grant, offered instruction to visitors, and helped anyone who stopped in with a technical issue.     Early Sunday morning at 2:06 a.m., the Wahkiakum County Sheriff's Department received a call about a structure fire, including the garage and deck, at a home in the 1300 block of Altoona/Pillar Rock Road.
