Westend farmers attend biosecurity talk to protect against disease By Jen Milliren Farmers gathered at the Grays River Grange last week for a biosecurity information session in response to the growing concerns about the H5N1 virus. Earlier this year, Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (H5N1), commonly referred to as "bird flu", made headlines after jumping from animals to farmworkers in Michigan, Colorado, Texas, and Missouri. Organized by Wahkiakum County Health & Human Services and Washington S...
For those of us who watch local TV, it has been quite an exhausting experience to see the number of ads for Kent and Marie urging us to vote one way or the other. Two years ago Kent was endorsed by Trump and picked up some outside money, but since the national folks thought he was a shoo-in, not much. Marie on the other hand had nearly no support from the national level. Even so, she ended up squeaking to a narrow victory. This happened because moderates from both parties voted for her, and far-left Democrats felt occasional support is better...
I am voting for Marie because she is working at all levels for us in SW WA. At the congressional level, Marie Glusenkamp Perez ( WA-03-D) recently teamed up with Rep. Juan Ciscomani’s (AZ-06-R) to design the bipartisan Ensuring Access to Medicaid Buy-In Program Act. A few days ago this bill unanimously passed the House Committee on Energy and Commerce to expand work opportunities and benefits for working adults with disabilities. She regularly visits us at Mile38 to listen to our concerns and to answer questions. Her “mobile office” staff...

COOL START. Well, as I begin this column we are sitting in a thick layer of fog with some nippy, lower forties temperatures and so it certainly feels like fall. The sunshine that came along with this cool start was nice and the once damp forecast is now showing a whole lot of days in the upper 60s and 70s, so that’s going to be great, if that holds true. I know we all have a lot of things that need to be done prior to the onset of winter, so here’s to getting that all accomplished. DEVASTATING. While we are enjoying milder weather here, we cann...

NICE START. Well, this week is starting off with some nice weather, although it was pretty chilly and very foggy out here in West Valley this Sunday morning but once the sun came out, it was super nice. By the time you read this however, we will most likely see some rainy weather as the forecast is showing rain on both Wednesday and Thursday, so we’ll see if that shows up or not. As long as it’s not a monsoon, it will be fine as my yard is still looking more on the dry side and having a little extra wetness will hopefully bring back that nic...

The first two articles in this series provided a progress overview and hardware review of the (Wahkiakum County Emergency Responder Radio System) project. This article covers how the system will be used in normal everyday use and in more widespread emergency situations. In normal use each of the participating agencies (Sheriff/SAR, each Fire/EMS district, HHS, PUD, county and town public works, school district) has its own band with its own set of local direct channels. Each of those groups also...

When the Pioneer Community Association (PCA) held their annual meeting in March, the top items on the agenda were fundraising and expanding the utilization of the historic Cathlamet Pioneer Center. All acknowledged that the PCA had pulled off a minor miracle when they received substantial funding from a grant with the Washington State Department of Commerce to restore the 125- year-old building. But that was yesterday’s news, we now needed move forward and work to fulfill our mission to not just preserve and maintain the Cathlamet Pioneer C...
CLOUDY. Well, we've had some cooler weather this past weekend as it was dry in some places and misty in some places. We had some light rain fall in some places and really dumped a few times too so it really depended on where you were and the time you were there as to what it was doing. We were pretty thankful for the rain though as it helps with fire danger and keeps those with springs flowing better. It makes one less chore to complete as we don't have to water our lawns. It appears that we have a mixed bag of weather coming to us this week,...

The Cathlamet Town Council met on Monday, September 16. After the Agenda was approved, the meeting was open for public comments. Public Comments: 1. Strong Park Clean Up will continue Tuesday, September 17, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. Volunteers should bring gloves, clippers and be ready for some ivy cutting. 2. People may have seen that the "Cathlamet Area News" Facebook page is full of expressions of frustration on the lack of communication of changes to the Swimming Pool schedule. A Zoom participant expressed that same frustration and hopes...
The Wahkiakum County Emergency Responder Radio System (WCERRS) project is underway and progressing ahead of schedule. The system being replaced had its last major upgrade in 2005. This system costs us about $2,000 per month to continue making temporary patches to keep it going. It has real holes in its coverage, requiring responders to change frequencies when moving around the county and to also act as relay stations for some parts of the county. The new system is expected to go live in...
At the Norse Hall 90th Anniversary Celebration on Saturday, September 7, there were several decendents of the founders: Sandra Contreras, Susan Brown and Reid Kenner who are descendants of Kristian O. Wika, and Cameron Monte whose ancestor was Ole Torgert. It was wonderful to see the depth of some of the families that are still members of this historic institution right on Puget Island. Board President Jan Silvestri gave a little history of the Helgeland Lodge 2-30 Norse Hall (Puget Island)....

The real value of $100 bill in purchasing power is lowest in CA $88, HI $89 and WA $90. The highest $100 purchasing value was $113 in AR MS; $112 in AL, IA, SD; $111 in ND, KY, WV; $110 in KS, MT, ND, NE. So in 12 states a $100 bill is worth $20+ dollars more than in Washington State. (see visualcapitalist.com). The issue is, our money is worth less in WA than in 47 other States. We should ask Governor Inslee and the Washington legislature why they failed to protect our state’s economic solvency and soundness. Good state leadership prevents p...
Andrew Carnegie said “a library outranks any other one thing a community can do to benefit its people”. Beginning in 1899, Carnegie, founder of Carnegie Steel, funded a dramatic increase in the number of public libraries in the U.S. This coincided with the rise of women’s clubs in the post-Civil War period. Women’s clubs led the establishment of 75–80 percent of the libraries across the country. They took the lead in long-term fundraising and lobbying within their communities. The Cathlamet Blanche Bradley Public Library began as a project o...
