Chris Bischoff, director of health and human services detailed his search for a public health nurse. The current nurse is leaving the county for a job making double her current salary. He said that our salaries are roughly competitive with neighboring counties but we are not even close to the national a...
Last Thursday and Friday, a CenturyLink internet outage inconvenienced residential and business customers in Wahkiakum County, including at least two local businesses in Cathlamet, the post office and The Wahkiakum County Eagle. It was cash only at the post office, and if you wanted to send something overseas, it would have to wait. On the other hand, for customers checking for updates on package arrivals, the alert would not be coming. They were just going to have to check their mail and find...

END OF ANOTHER MONTH--We’ll wrap up July and begin August on Monday and I’m still not done with my pre-Springtime chores; yikes! Now that it's hotter, the summer chores haven’t been done either as it’s too hot for me to work outside, so I feel for all of you who have to do that. The dampness we got on Monday morning was actually quite refreshing, but the rest of the week is going to be dry and toasty, so here’s hoping you’ve been slathering on the sunscreen and keeping yourself hydrated. Remember to reapply sunscreen every couple of hours or...

Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including: July 17 — 3:02 a.m. A person used the callbox outside the sheriff’s office to report that the FBI and President Trump were closing the borders of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho and declaring those states independent. He said there was no river traffic on the Columbia River and no vehicle traffic on Highway 30. He asked the sheriff’s office to sound the national alarm. 8:30 a.m. Someone from a Rosedale busin...
On Tuesday, the Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners discussed grants, including one to conduct a feasibility study on a consolidation of water systems, as well as other issues and potential issues that could affect the utility and its customers in coming years. General Manager Dan Kay said that five grants were submitted as of the last PUD meeting and they were now in the “hurry up and wait, follow up stage,” and that too was keeping them busy. After learning about a cybersecurity gra...
Wahkiakum County Port 1 Board of Commissioners met last Thursday for their July meeting to discuss traffic issues on port property and a few other matters. With increased traffic to the new River Mile 38 taproom, and some other changes around the marina, Port Manager Todd Souvenir had some suggestions to improve traffic flow, including a 5 mph speed limit. “It makes sense to slow it down a little bit,” Commissioner Scott Anderson said. “You’ve got a lot of boat traffic and a lot of people...
To The Eagle: I was told by none other than Ralph Kaiser that just because I don't live in the valley any longer is no excuse to not write letters to The Eagle. Given that encouragement here goes. First, thanks, Ralph! Secondly, it's only fair to other avid readers of my somewhat frequent opinion pieces to continue from afar. Actually, Longview isn't that far but it sure seems like it after 13 years in the Elochoman. I suppose one of the most noticeable things is that it doesn't really get dark at night. I miss the night sky with the stars,...
To The Eagle: Well now, last week’s letter in The Eagle, written by none other than the Liberal Town Crier, with his usual anti-religious rants, went way beyond the nonsense that is typical in his letters. This time his ugly comments were clearly aimed at Christians. The writer went into some of his so called historical facts dating back to the 3rd and 4th century. Here is a real fact for you. That writer thinks people of faith are somehow ignorant, perhaps even foolish to believe in God; well just like Karl Marx. He thinks we should embrace h...
No pedestrian, bicycle or ambulance access for 10-hour window of closure Travelers using State Route 433 between Longview and Rainier, Oregon, will need to plan ahead and prepare for a lengthy detour during an up-to-eight-day closure of the Lewis and Clark Bridge. At 8 p.m. Sunday, July 16, Washington State Department of Transportation contractor crews from Combined Construction, Inc. closed the bridge to motor vehicle traffic to replace two expansion joints and a fractured floor beam. The bridge must be closed to ensure a long-lasting repair...
WET START--As this work week begins, we are seeing some real rain here in West Valley and I can’t say I’m unhappy about it. My lawn and plants were looking a bit brown and miserable, so this unexpected summer drink was perfectly timed! I’m pretty sure those still in the midst of haying would not agree with that sentiment however, so I feel bad for those folks. Here’s hoping the upcoming forecast comes true and they can salvage those fields that still need to be harvested. Today, I’m thankful for the drink that our forests are getting and the s...

The month of July, they will meet on Fridays at the library with the first two sessions geared towards grades K-3 and the last two sessions meant for 4th and 5th graders. Each age bracket uses a different kit according to their age level. Last Friday the kids built a wheeled robot that pulled a skid. Then they ran several tests by...
COOLED DOWN--After several very hot days, I was happy to see the morning clouds and much milder temperatures arrive. I heard a lot of folks complaining of sunburns though, so one needs to be careful as while the sun seems like your friend, it really can be dangerous. Skin cancer is real and can be life threatening. Sunscreen has its limitations; it’s not meant for an all day, full blast exposure, especially near the water. So, take care, as I hear clearer, warmer weather is making a comeback this weekend! COME DOWN ON FRIDAY--If you want to g...

Some days you wonder how the day is gonna' go, but you just get up and get going. This was one of those days. Last night felt strange. I could not sleep. The air was damp and heavy with a higher than usual temperature. Bendog was restless and barked a lot on the back porch. I tossed and turned and felt like, well you know what I mean. I am blessed that I can look from my bed right out the front windows and see what's going on outside. The strangeness of the night just continued when I looked out...

The restrooms at Erickson Park are closed indefinitely after vandals repeatedly caused damage to the property, leaving town officials wondering how to move forward. The damage didn't all occur at once. Battery packs that powered the timed door locks were stolen, a knob was removed from a sink handle in a bathroom, a waste basket was kicked in, a toilet paper dispenser cover was ripped off, a light sensor was torn from the ceiling, super glue was poured on the exterior of a trash bin, garbage...
