  • Olson interviews Martin on River Writers

    Diana Zimmerman|Sep 7, 2023

Cathlamet resident Dayle Olson is unearthing new talents and excavating old ones, combining her love of writing and the written word with an early career in radio. This last year, during a spell on the board of the Writers Guild, she began co-hosting a radio show with Marianne Monson about writers who live in and around the Columbia River region. Her latest interview is already in the can, as they say, and this October listeners can hear her conversation with Skamokawa historian Irene Martin,...

  • Hawg heaven

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 31, 2023

By Diana Zimmerman In the last 10 years or so, Cathlamet, and the Elochoman Slough Marina in particular, has become a favored fishing destination for sports fishermen. Hoping to further promote tourism, the Wahkiakum Chamber of Commerce now holds a fishing derby each spring and fall fishing season. Last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, 76 people signed up to participate in this season's Hook the Hawg fishing derby, bringing in 25 local contenders and the rest coming from out of town. The event ra...

  • POTUS contenders are too old

    Aug 31, 2023

To The Eagle: Several things seem apparent to this perspicacious reader of The Eagle. First, without putting too fine a point on it, having just turned 80 it astonishes me that somebody my age would even want or consider running for POTUS. Regardless of qualifications, we're old men! And the other guy, at 77, has no business even considering another run. Being a serial liar, bully, cheat, and sniveling brat should be enough to disqualify him or anybody else with that kind of record from the highest office of our once great republic. Our...

  • What do parents know?

    Aug 31, 2023

To The Eagle: Regarding the school board candidate interviews, I would ask if there is such a thing as science, or such a thing as history? Ever wonder what these really are? Do they represent some abstraction of reality and worthy process? Are they are some component of the sum-of-us, of what it means to be human, what it means to be moral, ethical, practical? My sense is some ‘school issues’ represent ‘parents’ talking to themselves out loud about subjects of which they know little. Regarding my home schooling experience, I came to find th...

  • School board candidates share their views--Brian Heston

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 31, 2023

There are four candidates competing for two positions on the Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors. Two candidates in one race were covered in last week's edition, and two more share their views this week. The pair are vying for a position being vacated by outgoing Director Paula Culbertson. What did I learn about all four candidates? They may all have different definitions for critical race theory or different ideas about how to help local students, but they all care about the kids....

  • Covered Bridge Dinner sold out

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 31, 2023

COOLING DOWN--As I begin this column on Sunday morning, it is cloudy, cool and calm and we’re not worried about getting unbearably hot, so that’s okay with me, as those 90 to 100 degree temperatures were too much for me. The forecasters say we may get some rain, so we’ll see how that plays out. Fires are destroying acres of timberland, which is a tragedy for all of us, animals included. As always, be mindful of the fire restrictions that are currently in place in our area. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays Aug. 31-Sept. 6 are Nanea...

  • Hook the Hawg this weekend at the marina

    Kay Chamberlain|Aug 24, 2023

STILL DRY--It looks like our dry streak is continuing but the temperatures have at least gone down to a more bearable range, as those 100 plus degree days we had were just brutal. I hate to wish for rain, as there are several upcoming events that would not enjoy it, but maybe we could get a bit prior to those as we are definitely tinder dry, which considering the fires everywhere right now, is quite concerning. I hope you’ll all heed the burn ban in the county right now. SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrating birthdays this coming week, from August 2...

  • Cathlamet Market app on the way out

    Diana Zimmerman|Aug 24, 2023

The money saving app recently adopted by Cathlamet Market Fresh is going away. When Michael Kirby bought the grocery in Cathlamet, it became an independent store, no longer a part of Kirby Co. “The company that developed the app for Kirby Co. said we couldn’t use the same app going forward,” Kirby said. “They wanted me to pay to develop a new app. When it was split between eight stores, it was a lot more doable. It doesn’t make sense for us to continue it.” “We don’t want to go out and raise p...
