STILL PRETTY DRY--This past week saw temperatures back up in the high 80s, so it was pretty doggone toasty for September but things cooled down over the weekend; just mid 70s here, so that was quite nice. We had some brief drops of rain on Sunday and then a foggy, damp start to this work week so we got a snitch of moisture. Any of that is welcomed by my poor dried up lawn and thirsty plants! It looks like we are going to stay dry this week with those cooler but yet very nice temperatures, so we’ll see if that holds as they mentioned the p...

Carol Blix has checked out her last book as a librarian after a 40 year career, mostly serving right here in this community. Long before she became the librarian at the Cathlamet Library, Blix was inspiring young readers at Wahkiakum School District, working half days at the grade school and the high school. When budget issues arose, Blix was hustled into the classroom to teach a variety of subjects, from art, to middle school science, eighth grade careers, or American Literature at the high...
Cheri Rendler's story at the Cathlamet Library is a kind of epilogue to the career she's already had. A retirement job, she calls it. "I did not always want to be a librarian," Rendler said. "I wanted to be a schoolteacher, or a veterinarian, or the great American novelist." She grew up in the Bay Area in California. She attended the University of Washington and received a degree in English Literature, along with a certificate in fiction writing. "But as we know," she told me, "fiction writing...
By Diana Zimmerman Last Thursday, as part of United Way's Day of Caring, some Wahkiakum students spent time outdoors cleaning up the campus, trimming hedges, edging sidewalks, and more. Some current members and at least one former member of the Wahkiakum School District Board of Directors were there as well, volunteering a few of their hours in a similar manner. Out by the track, Stephanie Vossen and her crew from The Spar, a Cathlamet restaurant, were cleaning and painting bleachers and the...
Council, mayor, wrangle over repairs to Butler street By Diana Zimmerman According to the minutes from the August 21 meeting of the Cathlamet Town Council, when residents living on Butler Street submitted a petition requesting repairs to their thoroughfare the town council passed a motion, voting 4 to 1, to begin a project for an interim fix to stabilize the road. Council Member Robert Stowe was the only vote against. When the council learned that the repairs and costs involved would come to...
Baker talks Butler Street, Waterfront Joe Baker is hoping to continue serving on the Cathlamet Town Council after being appointed to fill a vacant spot in March this year. Baker is a relatively new addition to Wahkiakum County. After retiring from a 40 year career as the theater manager for Green River College and director of a popular Heavier Than Air Family Theater Company, he and his wife moved to Cathlamet. He recently started the Columbia Street Theater Company, and hopes to put on a...
Michael Severson is challenging incumbent Joe Baker for his position on the Cathlamet Town Council. A recent transplant to Cathlamet, Severson hails from Hillsboro. After getting a mechanical engineering degree from Portland State University, he moved into the heavy industrial sector of business, where he has been for 23 years. He now runs his own general contracting company. Severson says he's been coming to this community with his grandfather since he was two years old, "living the boat life."...
To The Eagle: Don’t you find it peculiar that, from day one when Trump became President in 2016, every day there was a front page headline from Democrats, liberals, and Republican-turned-RINOs trying to impeach him with false allegations? Even now, when he’s not president, we have front page headlines: Trump indicted with false allegations. They’re after other conservatives as well: Clarence Thomas, Rudy Giuliani, and Peter Navarro to name a few. Yet I don’t see front page headline news of the criminal activities done by Biden and his Democra...
To The Eagle: In last week’s Eagle, a writer made Biden-related comments that seem either ill-informed or disingenuous. So, in 350 words or less, here are my thoughts: By most accomplished economists’ metrics (Wall Street Journal, CNBC, Bloomberg, Neil Cavuto on Fox, etc.), not only is the Biden administration’s economic strategy working well, it’s working too well. That is why the Federal Reserve is still raising the Fed Funds rate. They have to slow down the economy to keep a lid on inflation. If you don’t like Bidenomics and a strong economy...
CLOUDY START--It’s a cloudy Sunday morning here in West Valley, which is certainly a big change from the day before when we woke up to bright sunshine and it wound up being a pretty day with temps in the mid-80’s. It’s a little more comfortable to do yardwork when one isn’t in the direct sunshine, so before the rains come, I hope you were able to take advantage of the dry and cooler temps so you didn’t get burned to a crisp! Forecasters are saying we’ll have a pretty mild week, so I guess I’ll have no excuses not to do some outdoor things prior...

In response to public concern, the Town of Cathlamet will host a public forum at which members of the community will be briefed on existing emergency strategies in the event of wildfires and other potential events. “Due to Cathlamet’s hemmed in location, it is not a surprise that citizens want more information now,” said Mayor David Olson in a prepared statement that was shared with The Eagle. Citing recent major fires in Paradise, CA, and on the Hawaiian island of Maui, the mayor expressed the need to inform residents of Cathlamet of evacu...
Wahkiakum County law enforcement officers and emergency response personnel handled a variety of reports during the past week, including: September 3 — 8:15 p.m. A caller reported that two people were screaming obscenities at each other at the wildlife viewing area along SR 4 in the Elochoman Valley area. A deputy responded and spoke to the woman who was there. She said everything was fine, and no injuries were observed. The pair left the scene. September 4 — 5:28 a.m. The Cathlamet ambulance aided a Beaver Creek resident with heart pro...
Raymond M. Toste was born on March 29, 1944, in Scotia, CA. As a child, he attended Grant Union grammar school in Ferndale, CA. When he was young, his family moved to Cathlamet, WA, on the Columbia River. He attended Wahkiakum Junior and Senior High School. He lived and worked on his family's dairy farm on nearby Puget Island throughout those years. Ray was active in school government and sports and held the school's home run record for many years after he graduated. After graduating from Lower...

An award-winning composer-pianist will perform in Cathlamet as part of a long-planned reboot of a beloved Cathlamet landmark. Massachusetts-based Dan Kennedy will perform at the historic Pioneer Center, with its iconic white tower, as part of a tour that will take him to Oregon and California. This is Kennedy’s first ever visit to Cathlamet. Kennedy and Pioneer Community Association President Suzanne Holmes have been in discussion for over four-and-a-half years to make the appearance a reality. Despite initial delays due to building r...
Commissioners met the day after Labor Day to approve several important measures. First, the commissioners approved a letter of support for the development of a source for drinking water on Puget Island. Because the Island's drinking water crosses the Puget Island bridge, the current source is susceptible to natural or man-made disasters which would leave the Island residents without potable water. The new source would also be a back up for the Town of Cathlamet. County employees will now get June 19 off from work as the commissioners approved...
The Wahkiakum County PUD Board of Commissioners heard reports and talked about potential impacts of a low income program being drafted by the state as part of the Clean Energy Transformation Act, which requires utilities to shift to clean, renewable and non-emitting resources by 2045. During reports, General Manager Dan Kay said a multiple month tree trimming project was recently completed by a contractor, and the total cost came in just under it’s $250,000 budget. The work helps prevent p...
To The Eagle: To those that sing about the joy of Bidenomics, I invite you to drive past the Chevron station in town to take a look at the price of gas. I bet you’ll change your happy tune. The writer last week states that Old Joe will create 1.5 million new jobs a year but I wonder what good that will do when at the same time he is letting 4 million enter our country illegally. Bidenomics is causing the working middle class incredible difficulty staying above financial ruin, and the poor--you know, the folks the Democrats say they care so m...
COOLER--As Labor Day begins, it’s cloudy and cool and according to the forecast, looks to last all week so those toasty, hot days that we had last week aren’t likely to reappear. As we all know, we can get a change in our forecast in a hot second. We weren’t supposed to have any rain on Sunday, but we did. We really needed the rain, so when we got some, many of us weren’t too upset, but others, with big plans and outdoor venues were a lot less thrilled to see it arrive. That’s Washington weather for you! SPECIAL DAYS--Those celebrati...
